The problem is that, without the third book of this trilogy, we don't know for sure what was Frank's goal. We have Brian Herbert's spin-offs, but I'm 100% sure he misunderstood what was his father's message

The Tleilaxu gave Duncan these "sex powers" meant to be used against the Bene Gesserit, when Lucilla would try to imprint him, but it backfired and actually worked against the Honorable Matres, so the new Duncan is a male Honorable Matre, like how Paul was a male Bene Gesserit in the first book

In this book Frank basically describes the food replicators from Star Trek and also makes a joke with Star Wars (that one 3-PO part = C3PO), calling it an inferior copy, which basically Star Wars is

I think what Frank Herbert was trying to achieve was to present us how alien like would distant future feel like. In this he succeeded, but readers can't go over oddly are some things in the books expressed. Like, imagine how ancient Romans would react to present day world. I'm actually suprised DUNE didn't go even further in how "weird" distant future culture could feel like.
@JBarG2216 күн бұрын
Honorable Matres are an off-branch of the Bene Gesserit which scattered to the new universe and decided to come back... Not for conquest, as this book might make it seem, but that's something we'll learn in the next book

I also hated the fact that they brought back Duncan AGAIN. I was fine with the first reincarnation of him in Messiah and Children, but I hated when they did it again in Emperor and AGAIN in Heretics, definitely the biggest negative I have with the books

@ well not “hate” I was exaggerating 😂but I just don’t like the concept of bringing back characters from death, imo it just wastes the opportunity of introducing a new and interesting character to fill the space.

Duncan Idaho is the pretagonist of Dune. Some people say Frank had a relationship with a man and he was so obsessed with that guy he created Duncan Idaho and that's why he appears in all the books

If this is true why is the sole homosexual person depicted in the series is baron Harkonnen who was an abusive child predator? Herbert might have turned feminist in the later books but I know that man was homophobic lol. Still like his books though
@msj787212 күн бұрын
@_kreetch9231 At best he was a man of his time. Not many people would openly support LGBTQ+ people. But my feeling was he was openly hostile. The baron is a horrible stereotype of an elderly gay man.

Heretics more sets up a new trilogy rather than acts as a single story, like Lord of the Rings, you just gotta read the trilogy
@ROMANTIKILLER223 күн бұрын
While I was reading Heretics, I often wondered where the heck the whole story was going: there were surely plenty of moving parts, but it felt less cohesive and focused to me. Also, there were sections where it felt like I was reading porn, which felt extra weird. Frankly, it is my least favourite of the series. Chapterhouse I found to be a more compelling read, probably because at least by that point I already had some connection with the characters and what they were trying to achieve, although without doing spoilers the finale left me perplexed.
@TB-fm8kf23 күн бұрын
Heretics wasn't my kind of book either. But i would recommend giving Brian herbert's two Sequels a shot, even tho the writing style is different it's still a solid conclusuion to what Heretics and Chapterhouse build up, and it's based on Frank's notes.
@timediverx2 күн бұрын
No, they are terrible, terrible books that do not belong in the canon at all. I would not wish reading them on my worst enemy. Whatever "notes" they may or may not have had (I think Brian is just a liar) do not change that fact.

So there's an evil sex cult in the actual Dune Books? Well...that sure explains 'Certain' Advertising in the New Dune HBO series doesn't it? (FYI I stopped at book3. Couldn't handle the Super-hero Worm dude!) Speaking of HBO, did you ever consider reviewing Game of Thrones, the books and or the Tevevision series? They're far longer reads than Dune so I'd get it if you didn't do it (Not to mention he'll never finish it. I'm not one of those guys who hates the Authors guts based on the fact, but c'mon dude.) but it would be interesting to see Ryan's take on the series considering how You enjoy both Vinland Saga and Berserk. Last Kingdom would make for a interesting reaction too, but I don't know those books!
