I honestly couldn’t even finish this book. I love Romantasy, it’s my favorite genre, and I love a book full of tropes, but this was just not it for me. Every single time I ran into a plot hole, which was multiple times, a chapter, I would be taken right out of the book, and get so irritated that I would end up putting it down. After trying to force myself to finish it for over a month, I finally officially DNFed it and even returned the book to Audible! The world building was so flimsy, nothing felt real, or tangible, the dialogue was so cringe as hell, and none of the characters actions made any sense!!

🐉🐍 I listened to the audiobook and omg...the language the author used kept putting me off of it! Violet got kinda on my nerves with how often she kept thirsting over Xaden, and while I understand she thinks he's hot, it just keeps HAPPENING! Like even when she thinks she's gonna die lmao I lost count of how many times my eyes rolled reading. I felt like Yarros could've used the extra time to flesh out their relationship, or focus on the flimsy worldbuilding (that ISNT just dumped onto us from a parapet OMG). I still have no idea what level of technology they have, and the government structure sounds a bit vague...in a story about an ongoing war T^T which sucks, idk. I hope you're doing well now, glad someone else also found this book hard to read :))

OMG!! A flood!! 😢 I've had my basement flood twice within 8 years and it wiped out my furnace, my gas water heater and laundry machines both times. It was so frustrating and expensive to clean up. I CANNOT even imagine your living space where you'd have to move out 😟 ... I feel for you. I hope things have settled down by now. I can already see that you are a strong and persevering woman. I can also see what an escape stories are for you and why a failing novel can be so disappointing and aggravating.

So it worth mentioning that all the military stuff she does it’s just wrong yet (as far as I know) her husband served in the army. That shows her lack of understanding or respect against anything. This book is wrong in the fundamental level. What I mean is: why the soldiers wear uniforms? It’s not just a joke. It has a long tradition and also it helps to feel that you belong somewhere immediately. If you are happy every member of the team is. If someone will attack you, they will defend you. Right? Also the feeling of the history that you have to respect. That’s why you keep it clean and in order. What does the author do with the uniform? Just FYI: the representation of her disability is not correct. I checked on a lot of videos and they have problems with it. It’s shallow as everything else. If she has that problem why exactly can she just “skip it” sometimes? And that’s a 100% sure reason why she wouldn’t make into any army on any world. It’s obvious her mother wants to kill her but still. She couldn’t do the training. As for “follow the rules” -> this is an army. He is correct. You have to follow the rules and that’s it. No, you don’t break the rules for love. But anyway: I would suggest to you to look up the publication of this book. Why did they ordered more in print than Sarah J Maas acotar at first? How did they know this will be a hit? How did it get a movie contract before publishing? This book you hold in your hands is actually not a real quality book, it’s a social media (TikTok) experiment of selling trash fast and fast to gain money and look, the 2nd book is here. I wouldn’t be surprised if in this the AI helped Rebecca to write. It’s too bad and full with tropes.

Naw fr. (TLDR: this is just me agreeing with you bruh). I used to be enlisted and I was reading the war college like wait wut? And how "conformity is for the infantry" but....the infantry is part of the college, so people took the exam to get in and went to the infantry. Then it was but nobody cares what the riders wear as long as it's black. So in a sense they do have a uniform? I didn't believe that she was a mil spouse until I went back to read the first few pages of the book, I still feel like I'm seeing things. She didn't ask her husband anything? And with the college, she could have looked up the naval academy and so on? And how Violet talks about the efficacy of the Riders and liabilities but like she's the biggest liability. Her character is also a Mary Sue, I haven't finished it yet, but her character doesn't change, she just becomes more insufferable but she already was. I honestly think this is an ACOTAR cash grab, especially if they got a movie deal and so on. It reminds me of how Divergent was riding The Hunger Games coattails. And this is supposed to be a 5 book series? There's no way. Girl just needs to take her money, run, and go back to writing contemporary romance cause she does not write good fantasy and those who have said otherwise I've just lost respect for and hope they go read actual fantasy like Sanderson or even Eragon because at least in Eragon there was heart and a thought process in it. (And the author was 15 when he wrote it and it's wayyyyy better than Fourth Wing despite its numerous flaws). I cannot get over how there is this craze for these books written as a middle schoolers YA fanfiction with aged up characters and I read Wattpad, I've seen better writing there.

I like to think the reason Xaden and Violet fight so much in the sequel is because Rebecca and her husband fought that often after he lied to her as a joke.

I love how you share your personal experiences as they relate to the book you're presenting... it creates an immediate connection. I agree with your rant on the flirting scene in the dorm. 😂😂 You read from it and I thought, "Yup, I'm with you on that!!" ... It just doesn't fit the context. I'm very picky with romance novels. There are some I've read I loved but many that turned me away. 😃

Zebra here. I was really disappointed in how Violet was treated in this book :/. I wasn't really impressed by how her disability was perfectly plot convenient, especially considering how much hand-to-hand combat she was in.

I loved your opinions changed during the book rather than having just a final opinion, great rounded review! I actually liked that Yarros threw in things as though they didn’t need describing because they were normal - Jesinia signing, Rhiannon’s choice of sexual partners, non-binary language used non-chalantly. Admittedly I loved the book because it was very easy to consume, but the lack of world-building was definitely frustrating when the history was described as being so complex!

I can understand being confused since the book doesn’t describe or explain it well. Jasinia is Deaf, her speaking is of no consequence as Deaf people are capable of speaking. I am low key glad the author do Don’t try and describe the signs or language used given how she treated the Scott’s language.
