Really Weird Rules Panera Employees Are Forced To Follow

There are few national chains like Panera Bread. It's like a fast-food restaurant in that there are hundreds of locations all over the country. But it's also more like a local cafe or bakery than your typical fast-food spot, with its fresh bread, soup, salads, bagels, pastries, and so on.
As such, working at Panera is unlike any other fast-food job. Instead of flipping burgers and frying fries, you're arranging the bread and ladling up soup. There are also some pretty decent perks for working at Panera, as well as some weirdness to endure. These are the really weird rules Panera employees are forced to follow.
#Restaurant #Panera #Rules

Three minutes or less | 0:57
Speedy drive-thru orders | 1:57

When I worked at Panera, donations seldom went unclaimed, but when they did, it was just a free-for-all for the employees once all the closing work was done. Also, our management was less concerned about speed, and we didn’t have a drive-through, so it was more chill, and we made fewer errors.
@calecbrayers3739
@calecbrayers3739 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. They don't let us take any donations. We're allowed 3 free items from bakery, only if we work the closing shift, and after that they bag everything up for donation. If it's unclaimed, either a manager takes it or it's trash.

Ex employee here: The new system they didn’t care too much on service times! We cleaned A LOT and broke down out stations and sanitized always. Sometimes it was just me and another person on salad, soup, and sandwich. Panera worker here :) 1. I get a free meal up to 15 dollars only when I'm working. 2. I'm not on line worker unfortunately so I can't confirm, but i do know we get extra time to make it in rushes! 3. We don't have a drive through): 4. We are allowed to place bagels and bread arrangement in any way we want. Whoever is on that shift, gets to choose. I make mine extra neat and tidy. 5. Most changes are free for food. 6. Donations do come unclaimed so many times. We aren't allowed to use it. We just wait until someone picks it up the next day. We do get to keep Whatever we want before donations to lessen waste. I take home tons 🤣

Current Panera employee. As usual, the info provided is kinda sorta correct but not entirely. Employees get a free meal (1 entree) during a shift, but some "premium" items are not free just discounted. For instance, you can get a drink for free, but not a smoothie nor a "specialty" drink like a vanilla caramel espresso. If you order a flatbread pizza and a whole sandwich and a bowl of soup, that's 3 entrees so only 1 is free. If an employee comes in to get food off shift, most managers give them the discount (but not the free meal.) We have an arrangement with the same charity who diligently comes each night to take any donatable items. If for some reason they don't (like inclement weather) then employees can split up that donatables. That RARELY happens. As far as the "3 minutes" goes, that's not really a thing. The managers know how long an order takes to make, and many orders take FAR longer. What they strive for is the "average" for the day is 3 minutes or less per order. Slow times during the day counteract the busy times or large or complicated orders. If someone comes in just for a coffee, that may take 30 seconds, so that helps impact the average. Yes, if you swap avocado for meat it is free because it's a swap, but if you ADD it then there is a charge. Makes sense because you're getting 2 "premium" items when you add but only 1 when you swap. The "messy" display bugs the Organizational OCD in me, but I deal with it as best I can, lol

Former PB employee here. The discount they give seems like not much of a discount at all. I forgot how much the discount was, It was either 35%, 45% or 65%. (I started working before the pandemic hit BTW). I believe some managers, if you asked would let you get free food but for premium items like grain bowls, etc. you get a discount (but I’ve seen that if you ask the manager, they would let you get anything free, just not maybe all the time). I think if you worked that day, you get free food (I could be wrong). Drinks were free except smoothies and some specialty iced coffee/latte drinks). Our store does pack away the leftover baked goods for shelters at the end of the night but each employee can pick what they want to take home before that happens (plus all leftover food gets counted & recorded at the end of the night anyways). My store was always on point with cleaning (which I actually did not mind doing) It was easy & and you just pay attention and go with the flow. Nobody bothers you. Yes, your discount only applies to the store you work for. Plus, customers now can definitely forget all about getting their food at a good time, now with the shortage of employees everywhere, nationwide, your gonna wait a little longer. I think I was able to use my employee discount & my regular PB customer card together.

As a customer and not an employee I'd like to say if it takes you more than 3 minutes to make up my order I don't mind I rather it takes six seven minutes and it be done right and safely and clean. Panera should take note from McDonald's when they had their time clock back in the '70s and early '80s for food service it didn't work and made matters worse service went down. I rather my service stay up and wait the extra few minutes
@seanswinton6242
@seanswinton6242 2 жыл бұрын
I agree totally. First of all, producing properly prepared and accurate orders are most important. Secondly, customer service fails when understaffed crews forced to play beat the clock. Add the modern-day male/female Karen syndrome workers have to deal with and it's a recipe for disaster.Three minutes is unreasonable for made to order food. Especially if a skeletal staff has no prep time.

Please note that not everything on this video is %100 accurate and is only partially accurate to some stores. I am a Panera Bread employee and in MY store it is not that bad. Yes, the goal is to get customers' food out in 3 minutes but the managers in my store are more realistic. You and two other people on the line (if there is anybody else, usually there should be 3-night closers on the line but a lot of the time there are only two as well) are not going to push out 10 orders at once and in 3 minutes. It's not possible and the managers understand but they do try their best to push us. Also, that bagel rack thing in this video, our managers don't get mad if we arrange the bagels to look decent in the rack. That sounds silly to me that managers would be upset about that. ANOTHER note, they have changed the employee meal discount. It might be different in others stores but they finally did away with the %60 off of an employee meal and now employees get free meals. But the downside still is that you don't actually get discounted meals outside your shift. Just only if your manager doesn't mind giving you a discount which more likely than not they will. I feel this video tainted Panera Bread in an unpleasant light and I'd just like to say (from an employee standpoint) it is not actually that bad. Actually, in fact, working here is an easy job and I would recommend people who are looking for a job to look into working here. It's not %100 perfect and no store is going to be but here you'll find a lot of amazing people. I've made a lot of friends working here.

I hate to break it to you, but nothing is made on site. Things are ‘customized’ to order, not “made to order.” Soups come in frozen, bread is made elsewhere and trucked in, etc. A few years ago, a corporate decision was made to abandoned quality in favor of cheap. I used to eat there a lot, but when they cut back on quality, I had to stop. My sister worked there for a couple of years. She stopped taking advantage of the perks because of the drop in quality.

i've worked at panera for the past two years (literally two years to this day, funny enough) - there is an emphasis on speed, but also for accuracy. at least at my store, they care a little bit more about accuracy than speed. ofc they would like the orders to go out fast, but they'd much prefer for the customers to wait longer if it means that their whole order is correct - for the bagels thing, i'm not sure if that's true or not. i've never done cash before, just line and drive thru. i'm assuming everyone just throws it in cuz no one gives a crap on if it looks nice or not - there are discount restrictions. it used to be (the first few months that i worked there) the discount was 75% off anytime. it didn't matter if you were working that day or not. you also got free drinks, besides the specialty drinks. although my managers kind of turn a blind eye to that cuz they don't care. there was one manager that i used to have that cared, but he doesn't work there anymore. now, we get a free shift meal up to $15. if you're working, you can get a meal during your break or after the shift that costs up to 15 bucks. if it's over 15, then you would have to pay for it. although most of my managers just gave it to you if it was over 15 dollars, but not all the managers do that - now drive thru at panera... i don't understand it in the slightest bit. panera isn't really a place to have a drive thru, but that's corporate and whatnot. my store has a drive thru and it's ok. if it's busy, you got to be prepared to be waiting in line for quite a while. like i said, panera shouldn't have a drive thru, so you would end up waiting quite a while cuz we have a TON of things to make. especially when someone orders 136 dollars worth of food in the last 10 minutes until closing -.- definitely not bitter in the slightest bit - for substitutions, you can add and take off things as much as you want. i believe avocado (if the sandwich/salad doesn't already come with it) is an upcharge and chicken on salads (if the salad doesn't come with it) is an upcharge. you can get really creative with your food, it's quite cool. but be warned, you will be judged for what you create XD we totally judge the weird ones - most of the time at my store the leftover bread does get picked up by the donations people. if they don't come, it's a free for all for the employees. the employees generally take a bunch of stuff home at the end of the night. anything that they've forgotten to put in donations or if the donations didn't come

I worked at the Yonge street Toronto Canada location for 4 months. I was the only hard worker there, racist brown manager who hated whites, racist staff against whites saying racist words to me like cracker, baked goods are frozen..... What else? Ohhh 1 night our assistant manager was working the floor and spilled an entire bowl of soup on the CARPET. He literally gets a sweep bucket and swept the soup up..... No liquids, no mop.... He just walked away after im not joking. Lemme know if you want some more horror story's?

Staff would sloppily throw food together, Ive had kitchen jobs for 25 years... Lul They were constantly hiring new asian students and i get theyre coming here to aid economy we are all immigrants here yada yada... But they have this douchey practice because its cheaper.... The students work for 6 or 8 months here and there... The managers thus don't have to pay big taxes on full time employees, full timers ask for health insurance which takes money out of the managers pockets...... So this is a dirty practice APPROVED by our "government" Also with migrant workers on farms.... The "government" doesn't wanna spend the money rehabilitating the thousands of homeless natives and whites in the towns around the farms??? They don't wanna spend OUR money helping them and giving those poor people a chance its TOO expensive.... So what do they do? Ohhhhh we will hire some part timers.... Remember the story i just told back there? SAME bs. The farmers, the farmers DONT wanna hire local citizens...... They cost too much... Hire migrants who can work for 1 or 2 months..... Meanwhile the West has the highest homeless per capita for a reason. We dont give 1 flying fck about our OWN. We care if our families okay, fck the neighbours.... Theres a reason China and Russia don't have homeless people setting up massive camps everywhere... Because they take care of them. Yes censorship derp derp and we all can evolve as a species..... Man id love to live in China but their lack of KZbin variety.... Lul Censoring the nba or something..... I need my ball. Lul. Peace yall. Vote for politicians that are aggressive towards the points I mentioned if you can thanks. 👍👍👍

Wouldn't call these "strange rules" necessarily. They make sense from a business standpoint. Why should someone get discounted food on their day off, or from a Panera that they don't make money for? I do think it's stupid though. Out manager keeps us from working more than 40 hours a week. We usually average about 25-30 hours a week. She tries to get us to train new employees. Just a little FYI, trainers make an extra dollar an hour. I do not make that extra dollar, so no, I will not train the new guy to pour soups. We're always out of everything because our manager orders as little as possible so that Panera's expenses are lower and her pay check is higher. The shift I usually work is from around 11 to 6:30 pm. I'm the only one working the line from 2:30 to 5. That means I have to do all salads, sandwiches, soups, and also bag everything up myself. This is done to keep "labor low". Basically it's to keep Panera from spending money on employees while it isn't getting a lot of orders, which is hilarious because orders start to pick back up at 4, meaning I have to call other busy workers down to line for about 45 minutes to help me because it's impossible for one person to put that many orders out on time. Our manager also refuses to fire anyone. One girl keeps stealing from registers and has gotten caught multiple times. She's the slowest worker their, the messiest, the clumsiest, and still has a job. She's lucky I don't have the authority to fire anyone because honestly we get more done without her there. Some guy from corporate came down recently to make sure we all made the food correctly and could answer questions on how to do our jobs and the only person who couldn't answer a single one of his questions correctly was the fucking manager. Panera is a joke. We are a fast food restaurant disguised as a fancy restaurant. Panera cuts so many corners both on it's products, workers, and equipment. Not only are customers assholes to us, but so is the manager. We'll be in the middle of the lunch rush and she'll be yelling at us to clean. Sure, dude. Lemme just ignore the 11 sandwiches in my screen to take out the trash while you sit on your ass in the office.

Employees can't seem to be Pagan or Atheist either because in one Penn. Panera the manager pressed an employee to find out her religion and started harassing her because it was Pagan and not Christian. The employee was eventually fired along with her husband who was an Atheist for not converting.

Sounds to me like Panera's business model isn't well thought out, either from corporate or the franchise. Pie-in-the-sky altruistic motives don't equate to the practicality & logistics needed to feed those who can use the help. Sounds like the bane of the current White House administration. Hope Panera figures out something.

Employees just complain way too much and feel too much entitlement for doing a job. If they aren't happy, then let them go out and start their own business and make their own rules. Enough "flummoxed" employees!

Have you worked there before. Don’t think that we aren’t applying for other jobs while we are working there. There is a 100 percent turnover ratio meaning the person you order over there may leave and find another place to work. Which means new employees have to be trained and customers still complain if the order isn’t done right. I’ve had more then enough customers who are entitled. Especially customers who are upset when we don’t sell items that are not on the menu and complain to corporate. There are lots of jobs on indeed but thousands of people are applying for them so you get a lot of no responses.

3 Minutes? Panera has THE WORST service in the entire country. EVERY store. IF they even make your order it will be wrong and they'll be rude as hell doing it. NOW I get it. They only work there for the cheap food. And that explains why the decent breads are always not available

No I get free food on the clock and only use employee discount off the clock ,that's how it is at my location atleast I also get free coffee and all drinks and smoothies if I have time to make it lol, my Gm is the best boss I've ever had tbh .. and we get breaks, only when we're not busy , we can wear any black shirt with sleeves and jeans or shorts as long as they're not torn, hat and apron required ... Drive thru has good times I would know because I open it 😌 with the exception of lunch rush which can go all the way up to 13min😭 we also play what we want on Bluetooth because our cafe radio broke🤌🏻 also some locations use liquidized eggs and egg whites ,mine does 💯
