Join me for a plant tour of my entire collection of all my Hoyas! I have 15 different varieties, mostly common but a few less common ones too 🤗
My Hoya collection has been living in the same location untouched for over a year and the plants are very happy in their bright indirect light -- and I also think they really like never being moved or disturbed so I'm doing a little show and tell but leaving them all in their place on my Hoya shelf. I'm very excited to be sharing these overgrown houseplants with you!!💕
🌟Hey plant friends! What are some of your favorite Hoya varieties or species? Are they fast growers in your opinion? What's the rarest Hoya you care for in your collection (if you feel comfortable sharing)??🤩 I want to know 😋🌟
0:00 Let's talk Hoyas!
2:23 Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor'
4:05 my relationship with hoyas
5:37 Hoya carnosa 'Compacta'
6:51 thirsty Hoya australis
8:10 how to water hoyas
9:49 Hoya macrophylla/latifolia 'Variegata'
12:00 Hoya carnosa 'Rubra'
13:00 about sun stress and the red pink in some Hoyas
14:17 Hoya wayetii
15:18 Hoya shepherdii
15:56 Hoya carnosa 'Krinkle 8'
17:17 Hoya pubicalyx
18:49 Hoya kerrii leafs
19:31 Hoya linearis
21:07 Hoya obovata (with peduncle)
23:45 Update: flowers!!
24:38 What is hoya splash
25:47 Hoya latifolia leaf + reclassification
27:43 Hoya rotundiflora
29:08 Hoya retusa
31:58 Thanks for watching :)
Some topics in this video include: how to water hoyas, classic beginner hoya mistakes (mistakes I made with my first hoyas), how I got interested in hoyas, what is hoya splash, hoya macrophylla vs latifolia, what is sun stress, how to make your hoya pink, what is a peduncle, strange pricing changes
Thanks so much for watching!! Cheers to making new plant friends 😊💜

I too did not “get” the whole Hoya craze. I bought my first Hoya (a curtisii) 3 years ago thinking it was a SOH!! LOL…anyway she was just barely hanging over the edge of her 6” nursery pot…today she is about 2’ long and has 2 podunkels (spelling?)…I am hoping to get blooms soon! I also have a krimson princess and queen, an Australis and a pubicalyx!! All of them are growing well…and growing on me!! Love your videos…you are entertaining (in a sophisticated and no nonsense way which I really appreciate) and informative!!

You are so right about houseplants being absolutely fine with a week of neglect. The mini orchids (or any mounted orchids) generally need more care, so here's what I tell people. Water them, let them get to the point where they're just damp (maybe a couple hours after watering), and then put them in a closed container. Possible choices of container range from a glass jar/candy jar to a big clear tote. A ziplock bag does the trick, as well. Your choice doesn't even have to be completely clear, but I wouldn't choose something entirely opaque, either. I once accidentally left some mini phals in a regular plastic shopping bag for 6 weeks. When I found them, they looked perfect! Not shriveled or yellow or damaged in any way! Orchids are amazing. In a closed container, the plants can go weeks or even months without additional care. You can even choose to do this as a means of making mounted orchid growing way less work intensive. I hope that helps you and your subscribers! Great video and great message: don't freak out!

Don‘t give up early on the hoya leafs! It took my H. kerrii over a decade until it suddenly decided that beeing single is boring and started to grow into a full plant. First I was so excited and happy, until I noticed how fast the kerrii grows and never branches out, regardless how often you cut it back. So, now I have numerous little kerriis crawling around here and a mother that grows up on the wall, along over the door into a bookshelf, behind the books, up and down the floors and over the books again… and it is impossible to get it out there ever again without cutting it into pieces, as its stem is really thick and sturdy. But first I want to see a flower on her. When the Hoya hearts are planted, they have no roots and need to be stabilized for their time in the nursery and disposal. This is usually done by embedding the leafstalk in coco fiber that is tightly wrapped around it. Mostly it is so overtightened that it prevents any growth from developing. Supposingly it took the coco fiber about ten years to break down on my kerrii leaf until it managed to poke through its prison walls. If there is something similar wrapped around your kerrii leafstalks, you could consider removing that and help it sprout. Considering how fast the kerrii can grow, the single leafs are pretty overpriced, especially before valentines day… basically everything heart shaped is selling like hot cake… and gets overpriced. In case you can get your hands on auxin and cytokinin, this quote from wikipedia might be interesting: „When auxin and cytokinin are applied to callus, rooting can be generated with higher auxin to cytokinin ratios, shoot growth is induced by lower auxin to cytokinin ratios.“

I love your collection! In my list to get once we are not so cold here, is the Hindu Rope, which if yours gets too long, chop it and stick it on the other side of the same pot. It will get fuller. 🌿And the other one is the Obovata. I don't want to buy any other variegated plant because one of my very favorites is pretty much dead even with all the care, and you are right, all the white leaves can't do good to a plant even if they look beautiful

Hoya Australis grows soooo fast! I got a tiny plant 6 months ago, it's only of my largest plants now! I get two new leafs almost weekly. It grows faster then any plant or Hoya I have! And it def needs more water then most hoyas. But I love it because the new growth comes in almost black! It's so dark, they are a blackish red color! I love my australis and my Lisa! Super fast grower!

Super beautiful hoya collection. Appreciate the care tips as well. Lots of valuable information. The queen was my first hoya 3yrs ago but it's been such a SLOW grower for me that I kind of lost interest in Hoya in general but have since picked up a handful of others including the Obovata that seems to be a super fast gower...in the exact same south facing window as my queen. The Obovata has proven to be a much more rewarding plant to grow, glad I decided to try another variety. :) Great beginner Hoya plant. :)

Hi there :) I also had a singel leaf hoya for more than two years and it only grew roots. So i did some research and found out that to properly propagate a hoya, the leaf needs a part of the stem. Eventhough it can work without the stem part, it will "likely" only grow roots. I made some experiments and noticed that the one leaf propagation method works on some varieties better (like on the hoya carnosa) but on others not. That is also the reason why the sweethart hoya leaf stays a one leaf hoya. My recommendation is to generally only buy hoya cuttings with a note or at least some stem part. Best wishes and plant success!!!!

Very nice collection. I looooove Hoyas. I am still waiting patiently to cross paths with Macrophylla and Obovata of any kind. Albo marginata or Pot of Gold / Regular or Splash......I’ll take it😀 The Hoyas genus have soooo many cultivars and hybrids that sometimes it might feel like buying a slightly different version of the same plant also being indoors a lot of plants does not have the cance to reach their potential , what they might look like if left in nature. Maybe the Obovata, in nature, change shape of its leaves or the kerrii is a cultivars of the Obovata and something else. Who knows? Try to bottom water your Australis, this way she might soak up more water.

I’ve got a queen who just pushed out a big health pink leaf woooooo I bravely added two Carnosas which sound pretty bullet proof. I have 65 Hoyas that I grow in a highly lit South facing window with 75% humidity. I have found that there are quite a few that do not like to dry out. Serpens and it’s daughter, Mathilde absolutely hate it. Retusa, I keep fairly moist also. All grow quite fast! Publicalyx does way better in higher light, turns 90% silver from the splash, eventually the silver turns pink!…”blister variegation” is what splash is.

I just bought a very thirsty hoya for $5 at my favorite local nursery. I can't really tell at this point if it's a green carnosa or an australis...it's limp almost to the point of losing it's shape, not quite but close. Soaked it in about a half inch of water for about a half hour, just put it in it's quarantine spot. Hopefully it feels better by tomorrow

Are hoyas hard to grow
@bharusiva477
@bharusiva477 2 жыл бұрын
Single leaf cutting of Hoya would grow roots but never will shoot up stem or leaves, they never actually grow. But if by any chance, you got a leaf cutting that still have some stem portion attached, then it will grow. If the leaf cutting is devoid of any stem portion of the leafnode attached, it would never grow how many years we keep it.

I desperately want a Hoya Spartioides (the oops all peduncles Hoya) but I’m not about the prices. I may have to track down a Retusa.

The reason your latifolia isn't growing is because there is no node to do so, same goes for your kerii

Interested in hearing about your horticulture certificate! I'm interested in getting one just because I love learning about horticulture. What are the benefits of having a certificate, in your eyes (I need inspiration!)
@reallybigplant
@reallybigplant 2 жыл бұрын
i have so much to say about this thanks for asking 🥴 I’ve been hoping to transition my career into the world of horticulture and I think getting a certification helps open some doors to new career options that my plant interest alone doesn’t qualify me for. I studied philosophy in college, but find myself wishing i had gone with biology or environmental science because i would be more eligible for jobs i’m interested in now (who could have guessed 😅😂) so in that regard I know that this is a really good idea for me! But i also do think that having been a diligent plant youtube watcher for many years already equipped me with a lot of the info I’ve been learning. and find myself gritting my teeth through some busy work...basically it’s been a while since i was in school and I forgot that it can be a lot of assignments that don’t necessarily pertain to my interests...and i’m paying to do it. So in that sense I think if you’re trying to enrich and deepen your understanding of horticulture as a hobbyist and you are self motivated to consume plant content, it’s more fun to learn at your own pace without needing to ,like, do awkward group assignments with other adult learners lol But at the same time it’s nice to have some structure in a learning situation too. And it really depends on your goals. I could go on and on about this topic- I might talk about this in repotting video or something because I have a lot of opinions.....but I think the gist is that I don’t believe it should be necessary to pay for this level of plant knowledge for the education alone because there are a lot of formally educated people and solid learning resources who make all of this info (and more) available for free

You should space them apart... they're all cluttered together .....maybe that helps them grow faster 🤔🤔🤔
