Major label deals can suck...yeah.. but that isn't why so many of these 'artists'/shower singers are destitute. It is because they blow through their advances like children and then when their album doesn't sell as good as thought it would, that advance is never recouped and they end up in the hole with the record company. Look at it this way...if someone loaned you 200K when you had no steady or guaranteed income coming in, would you go out and buy a Ferrari and a gold chain? I sure wouldn't. But that is what these turkeys do. Then they complain that they signed a bad deal. Until that advance is paid back, you aren't getting fat cheques. In the music industry today, the money is in touring and merchandise. Even for legacy rock acts that play stadiums and arenas..the money is in touring and merch. Rappers and R&B acts rarely play stadiums and areans..and they don't have extensive tour schedules. They don't have anywhere near the amounts of money that ppl think. Other than a few big acts and other legacy acts who were lucky enough to get in when record sales still mattered, the big money isn't there anymore. ...on top of that...rap & r&b acts are the only guy still pushing for major label deals.. Most rock acts are starting their own labels or using independent labels now. They are willing to put in the work. They don't get the advances..but they get to keep their money. Joe Bonamassa gave the following numbers. As an independent artist, he makes the same amount of money selling 30,000 copies of his albums as he did selling 3 million copies when he was on a major label. Let that sink in.... Again...if he made X dollars selling 30,000 copies of his album..he would have had to sell 3 MILLION with his old major label deal.
