My schools explanation for this was absolutely horrible not to mention breezed by like it was a easy 2+2=4 concept. This video is amazin for those who need to visualize the information. HTTP and HTTPS is just some of the protocols that reside in the Application Layer. Skype is very well known to use VoIP heavily. Voip resides in the Application layer along with http and https. I don't think the narrator meant to say that Skype uses Http (maybe I'm wrong), but I think he meant that Skype is accessing the same layer your browser is accessing and the browser needs HTTP.
