What is a floating license and how is it different from a standard software license?
In short, a standard software license is for exclusive use whereas a floating license is for shared use.
You buy a floating software license when you want to share the use of software amongst a group of users.
If you buy a standard license, the software can only be installed on one computer and it is accessible to one user only. BUT, when you buy a floating license, the software can be installed on a network of computers allowing access to multiple users.
In other words, a standard software license allows only one user, but a floating license will allow a group of users to access the software.
For example, let’s say you buy a TIA portal which is the PLC programming software from Siemens. The TIA portal product description states that you have purchased a floating license for one user.
Now, what does that mean? It simply means that you can install this software on your office or home network and then all the people who have access to that network can use that software. BUT, here’s the catch…
There can only be one user at a time. That means if you are using the software and another colleague wants access, they’ll need to wait until you are done and signed out.
Why can’t my colleague access the software while I’m using it? Because this is a floating license for only one user. It is a shared license, not an exclusive license.
If you want the software to be used by two users at the same time, you need to buy a floating license for 2 users. In this case, a colleague can also use the software even if you are using it. Why? Because this is a floating license for 2 users.
If you want more users to be able to access that software at the same time, you just need to buy a floating license for more users.
Hopefully, we’ve answered any questions you may have had about a floating license. But, you may still have a question about when a floating license is needed instead of a standard license.
Well, let’s say you have four PLC programmers in your company that need to use the TIA portal but not all at the same time.
In this case, instead of buying 4 standard licenses, you can buy a floating license for one user which is always less expensive. The software can now be shared among these 4 PLC programmers.

hi, what could be a disadvantage of a floating licence vs a standard licence? could we say for example: I have the licence (either S7 or Logix) residing on a server and I need to add a new ethernet device(PLC) that needs initial cfg or I need to acces an old PLC on a machine which is not on the OT network of the enterprise ...it would'nt be possible to have physical acces to it accross the server, would it?

A floating license is one that is accessible via a network connection. The license is for the programming software (TIA Portal, for example). The disadvantage of a floating license is that you need to have access to the network on which the license resides. This may be an issue for an engineer who is visiting a client site. In that case, a standard, machine-resident license may be better, but only that computer will be able to use the license.

thank you very much RealPars ..... if I have TWO PLCs (both of them S7-1200 ) and ONE package of software (TIA portal ) with laptop..my question : Can I use this one package of software for all PLCs regardless type of license?

Yes, but only one of the laptops can be using the software at any given time. In this case, both PCs will need to be able to access the location of the floating license. You can install the software on as many PCs as you like, but each PC needs to have access to a license when it is being used for programming, and only one PC can be using a particular license at any given time.

If you have installed the Siemens software on multiple PCs (2, 3, or more), it is necessary to transfer the license to the specific PC you intend to use. A floating license, designed for one user, can be installed on a network. However, only one individual with their respective computer can utilize it at any given time, unless you opt for a floating license tailored to accommodate multiple users, as previously mentioned, based on the number of users requiring access. Since all PCs are in network and it is called a floating license, I was in impression that any PC can access that license without transferring it to the local PC. (It is like One PC can access license on network at one time, Second PC has to wait till first PC is disconnected with license server. And that is without transferring the license files to local computers.) I don't know if Siemens has this solution !

In the case you described, you will need to either connect online at the site to access a floating license on your server, or, transfer a license to your laptop, either a floating license or a standard license. Normally, laptops that are used by PLC programmers will have a standard or floating license dedicated to that laptop so that access is never an issue.
