First, let’s separate the terms between Ethernet and IP. When most people think of Ethernet, we think in terms of a physical connection.
You may have an Ethernet port on your computer in which you plug in a cable that then connects to a router or switch.
This connection type is typically called a LAN connection.
However, Ethernet is not a connection type but instead, an IEEE protocol.
In our everyday use of the Internet we typically just say that we are connected via Ethernet or Wireless.
It’s much easier to say Ethernet than to get into the weeds of the actual terms of connection protocols, stacks, layers, and the like.
Now that we have said that Ethernet is a protocol versus a physical connection, let’s get a little into the weeds of some of the terms.
Most communications to our computers or devices travel over one or more networks via something called a packet.
Since there is a multitude of devices that may want to send and/or receive data there have to be some common rules for sending and receiving these packets. This is where the protocol comes in.
One of the most commonly known protocols is the TCP/IP protocol. This protocol is widely used in internet communications. The term TCP/IP relates to TCP or “Transmission Control Protocol”, where the IP is Internet Protocol.
There are other protocols such as Open System Interconnection or OSI but for simplicity sake, let’s stick with TCP/IP for now.
The TCP/IP is a layered protocol. Those layers are Applications, TCP, IP, and Network. Basic functions are explained but there are many, many details in each layer.
Each layer has a function that it performs and when complete, is then passed to the next layer. In terms of the internet, the transmitting computer will pass its data to the applications layer.
This layer works with the applications software to provide communications that may be required such as HTTP, FTP, POP, DNS, IMAP, etc. That layer will add some data that will identify and direct the data and then passes to the TCP layer.
In the simplest terms, Ethernet/IP is Ethernet packets used with the Industrial Protocol of CIP, TCP/IP, and/or UDP layers to provide the required data to your controller.

I had this issue with the hmi saying the vfd was off. I checked and the vfd was on the conveyor system was waiting for a robot to place a part onto the conveyor a door beneath the conveyor needed to be reset and the pallet needed to be pushed forward to reach the sensor. The initial fault that said VFD not on confused everyone at first. Great videos also this opens up better understanding for fanuc and kuka robots working together.

@scottsommer6480

Both Ethernet and Profibus are protocols that are used for industrial communications. In addition, Ethernet has been made a standard (IEEE 802.3) and Profibus has also been made a standard managed by Profibus International.

Question: we call Modbus and HART protocol and TCP/IP also a protocol. But they are not the same. Why both of them are called protocols?
@realpars
@realpars 3 жыл бұрын
A protocol is loosely defined as a set of rules that two devices use for communication; usually, these are rules for digital signaling. The protocol defines the rules, syntax, semantics, and synchronization of communication and possible error recovery methods. HART (digital AC signal superimposed on a DC current signal), Modbus, and TCP/IP are all digital protocols that package/transmit data based on the rules of the protocol.

Can you do a tutorial to implement this protocol between PLC and LabVIEW or Visual Studio?
@realpars
@realpars Жыл бұрын
Hello Iñigo Silva. Thank you for your question. That is a good question. I can ask the instructors to look into this possibility. But it is possible for a PLC to connect and talk to LabView and Visual Studio components and exchange data with the correct hardware and software that meets the needs of each of these platforms of the PLC in question and these two software programs using the spec-out hardware. You can go to LabView or Visual Studio and the PLC company of your choice to look at how to interface with them. Happy learning!

when connecting PLC to PC using RJ45 cable (network cable), the cable should be in straight or crossover configuration?
@realpars
@realpars 3 жыл бұрын
Typically, you would want to connect both the PLC and PC to a network switch, since often there are many other devices in the network. With a switch, you use a normal straight-through cable. I you connect directly from the NIC in the PC to the ethernet port on the PLC, then you will need to use a cross-over cable.

Ethernet is a protocol or a networking standard? Wiki says this: Ethernet is a family of computer networking technologies commonly used in local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN) and wide area networks (WAN)

Going on to 6:07, if i have a close loop to operate a control valve then also it will be a UDP ?
@realpars
@realpars 2 жыл бұрын
It likely will be. UDP is a "stripped down" version of TCP, which runs more efficiently with less overhead. UDP is usually a configuration selection at the PLC processor or I/O subsystem level.

Hey, I'm a bit confused, is it an ethernet packet or an ethernet frame?
@realpars
@realpars 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Packets are units of data that are passed through the Network Layer (for internet traffic, this is the IP part). Frames are units of data in the Data Link Layer (e.g. Wifi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, etc). An ethernet frame is encapsulated with additional data to become a packet. Why does this matter? Well, unless you are diagnosis packets and frames using test equipment, it really does not matter much.
