I’m a college student, but something my high school math teacher always did was hand out smarties on test days (to make us smart) and if we were stuck in the middle of a problem we were allowed to ask her “am I on the right track” and she would give us a thumbs up or simply point where the problem went wrong. I think it’s important to realize teachers want students to succeed. They’re never out there to trick or set someone up for failure. I just think it’s cool that a teacher can have such a big impact on a student. I’m getting a second education minor bc of how much I enjoyed my high school math teachers.

I do that to my daughter. Given shes only 10 and home schooled. Shell ask me "Hot or Cold" and I wont say a word but Ill give her a subtle look. She usually knows she is missing something but I think wants some reassurance its ok to erase and start over.

Before the test I tell my students, "You can look UP for inspiration, DOWN in desperation, but not SIDE TO SIDE for information." It is a funny way to remind them not to cheat. On the final exam, I put the answer to the bonus question on the ceiling if they look up for inspiration. That's how I add "magic" to the class

There is just something so inspiration in your videos. Especially since my little people have no idea what a test even is. Heck they are just learning how to say the word test.

I do most of the things you mentioned, & I also play instrumental classical music quietly! I find that the students (I teach middle school math) have a really hard time focusing in the complete silence, so the music really breaks it up. Plus it exposes a lot of kids to instrumental music and a lot of my students say they listen to it on their own time to do homework and relax!

Hey Reynolds, Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. I'm a (very) young teacher just finishing her first year teaching English as a Second Language to adults in Australia. This year has been very challenging, wonderful and satisfying. It has opened my heart and mind to experience human interaction on a deeper level. Your videos have inspired me to hone in on the human connection I experience everyday in class, and nurture the relationships with my students. I love to ask them 'deep' questions at the start of class to kick-start the lesson (and let them practice their speaking fluency). Often, the responses I receive create a reciprocal 'student/teacher' atmosphere. I teach them English, and they teach me about their life experiences and cultures (Mongolian, Thai, Colombian, Brazilian, Japanese, Turkish...). Thank you for inspiring me to nurture the connections with my students and become a better teacher. Tess

Thanks for this realness! Aspiring teacher here who dreams of being a great teacher, and watching KZbin teachers is so inspiring because I want to be a great teacher too. But sometimes I feel like what am I going to have to do to measure up to these guys - I shouldn’t go into teaching after all! But, my logical brain realizes that it’s a craft that will take time to get really good at, and that nobody starts out knowing everything to do and experienced teachers don’t have picture perfect days all the time, and if I do my best and just be real, I might not be perfect, but my future students and I can do this, and we will do it together!Have a wonderful day, I’m grateful for your honesty and encouragement. 😊

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS. Honestly, just knowing that when you have a bad day it's not just you and it's not always as bad as it feels is something that's really important to hear. Especially coming from an experienced teacher that obviously works hard to be his best every day and makes great connections with all kinds of students and can obviously work magic. This is really encouraging. Can definitely relate to the crazy zoo a classroom sometimes becomes noise-wise. great tips!

In my classroom, I had several students who were deathly afraid of failing and so as a class we talked about how important it is to fail big time when you are young so that you can learn how to pick yourself up afterwards. Because of this, I have a pretest soundtrack of "inspirational music" that I play while students are reviewing their notes. They contain songs such as "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Under Pressure" by Queen along with "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar.

I tried ZipGrade and didn’t like it because the format didn’t fit my test, and then I figured out you can create your own answer forms. Game changer. I only had to take home a sheet of paper for each student’s test yesterday because the test itself was separate, and I was able to grade the multiple choice component instantly.

I love that you give the kids the option to discuss an answer with you. I think this is SO powerful for the kids. My daughter had a test last year when she was still in public school and she was SO confident that she was going to get a 100 this time. She struggles hard with reading and writing and it was a writing response test to a book with 5 multiple choice at the end. She missed one question and she knew it was right. She wouldn't let it go. that was a year and 2 months ago now and she still remembers the exact question and choices she had and what she answered. Her answer was correct. Teacher wouldn't even listen or look at the test. It was a book I am very familiar with as well as many people who have ever been 7-10 years old lol. A simple explanation of why it was wrong in her mind and what the right answer was, or even simply taking a look would have killed it then and there. I was very lucky. My teachers always took the time to sit down after the test and go over the test for 2 reasons 1) make sure those who maybe didn't understand a concept could ask questions/get clarification 2) if they made a mistake it could be corrected without them having to unfairly take away points or sit and review a bunch of a test. It helped so much to review after and know that our teachers were here to pass their knowledge and respected us as human beings who simply hadn't mastered their knowledge yet and did not see us as an inferior subspecies. Heck I had one teacher who knew I was more knowledgeable about an author we were studying and he asked me if I would like to sit with him and prepare the lesson and teach it instead of read a book he knew I could recite and write an essay he knew I did not need to write. It was a blast and I loved every minute of it...yet I never took the leap to actually become a teacher.

When I was doing observations this semester the couporating teacher wanted me to give the students a test for my five E lesson. I made two test I made one with a word bank for students that did not have IEP or a 504 plan. For the students that had IEP or a 504 plan I made a multiple choice test. I had my advisor look over the test he said they look good. The couponing teacher wanted me to give the students the same test. I had the students vote on the test. The students voted multiple choice.

I think it's hard as a teacher on KZbin to really show the downsides of teaching as it's hard to go into details about what made the day so difficult without having students who watch your channel know who you're talking about, even if you don't use any names; it wouldn't go well if students were like 'hey Thom was complaining on his KZbin channel about how much Steven made his day terrible last week.' So instead we have to sort of just use vague descriptions. Additionally, you don't want your channel to be a place where you're always down but want to offer value to other teachers based on what has worked for you in your classroom so I get it. Tough to balance being real and authentic but also not airing your dirty laundry out on social media

Hey Reynolds, I found your channel last week and love your videos! I'm just commenting as I've been working as a cover supervisor/sub and I'm seriously starting to consider teaching "high school" in the UK. You seem to be so positive in all of your videos and I know its probably because you've found your calling but I was just wondering what your week looks like as a teacher? With the kids being in the classroom before and after school and on lunch breaks how much of your day are you devoting to planning/grading and where are you getting most of this done?? Would love a video on this but would also be very happy just to get a response :-) Jade.

Maybe its not your race that's holding you back but your perception. Talk to your union rep or the school board or fellow teachers to see if they feel that way. But don't just sit back and be a victim of a perceived racism. Or find a new school.
