One of the factories near me has a speed limit of 9-3/4 on their property, somebody was clearly a Harry Potter fan. I will say it definitely caught my attention, I even went back took a picture.

My starter quizzes were too hard. I had a starter quiz (bell quiz?) everyday but half the kids couldn't remember how to do them. they would immediately give up and get off task. By the time I finished taking attendence and getting things ready they were already 4 or 5 minutes off task. this set the stage for a terrible classroom management situation. Now I will delay attendence to give a quick reminder. Ias soon as the bell rings, I remind them to put their phones away and start working, then 'll write the equations on the board and encourage them to spend a little time thinking about what we learned last time. when a kid comes in late, the room is quiet and people are working so they usually jump right in (even though they missed the reminder). There are more days now that attendence time runs smoothly than days that it doesn't, but I'm always trying to get better. by the way, it was an educational coach who helped me discover my problem. If your school has this resource available, they are awesome!

It’s really annoying since educators are underpaid (so all of this will be on your own dime and time), but the best thing you can do for your health in this job is get a head start. As much as you can do before you NEED to do it, the better. I encourage having at least a 2 week head start- this ensures that you always have 2 weeks worth of stuff prepared, you can impress students because when you speak you know exactly what coming up and when (it’s shocking to me that kids get excited by that - I guess most teachers fly by the seat of their pants?), and if you need to take time off, you can because everything is already prepped (this made me the envy of everyone when they would ask me why I always looked so relaxed). This also gives you time to forge relationships with staff and students. You cant exactly bond with a kid while working on tomorrow’s lesson. Get it done early. Do not wait for it to be needed.

I've had experience using several different types of interactive whiteboards. The thing that was always so frustrating to me was figuring out how to use them. Even after trainings, I still never figured all of it out, and I know they were not being used to their full potential, which kind of defeats the purpose. What I really like about the Vibe Board is that, first of all, the interface looks just like a normal tablet which would make it super intuitive right off the bat. Secondly, the fact that you can access what you need from anywhere in the room is a benefit in and of itself. Being able to move around the room is a key component to meeting your students' needs as well as having successful classroom management. I can really see how the Vibe Board can make teaching better without adding one more thing to our plate!

Being honest this was just a massive advert. really doesn't look anymore practical to any other smart board on the market. Its actually inconvenient to use a 'tablet' that big because you have to move to use all of it and the whole screen will not be in focused eye site. don't get me wrong some interactive activities with the kids will be useful but i think regular classroom uses like searching the internet will be better on a computer.

@CJReynolds 13 күн бұрын
Hey Sam, I have to disagree. One of the features I loved about the Vibe was that you do not have to use it only as a tablet. Teachers can access the interface from their computers, phones, or tablets. Being tethered to a smart board by an HDMI cord can be maddening. Giving students access to be able to display their work from their seats to the board easily is a huge advantage. Helping students to make real world connections by using the side by side screen splitting feature (that can become interactive as well) is another worth while feature.

The voice to text feature helps to give confidence to students. Hand-written ideas can be transferred to a digital format without having to spend time, hoping that the system can decipher one's writing.

Why is this better than using a computer or tablet with our existing digital projectors? To interact with the board you have to cover the content. This has been tried a few times before and ultimately we always end up back at the projector and tablet / computer mirrored to it.

Oh, no I cannot let students with Behavioral issues know I am the one who is gonna report you to your parents because my life has been threatened many a time. What I am contemplating is informing them they are being watched and that information is automatically provided to parents daily, automated system. Since we cannot yet or always video tape them, but I do let them know 1st day rules and to think & talk (private discussion, one-on-one but two [teacher + one Staff) about what parents do when positive/negative information is transmitted to them. Protect yourself!!!!

This past year it seemed like if there was any sort of reading on a paper the kids wouldn’t read it and would ask for help when the answers are clearly in the text. 🤦‍♂️

I agree. Our department focused on helping students to "read with grit." This was an effort to help students raise their reading stamina in class. We introduced short amounts of independent reading throughout the week, found better ways to chunk reading assignments, focused on annotating rather than just reading for comprehension, and looking for small ways to make reading fun in class.

Teaching is the only career that you are expected to function like a 30 yr professional on your first day. Even doctors get handheld, to varying degrees, until they are ready; even then their job is just more of the same. Teachers get taught one thing, and then experience something very different. Especially for those who complete teacher prep programs for their bachelors, they often don't have enough experience to weather the storm of being in the classroom. That’s one of the reasons why attrition rates for new teachers are so high. I had 4 yrs teaching experience with college students prior to high school, and I still felt overwhelmed and barely hung on in my first year. I can only imagine how someone with no teaching experience at all would feel having to do it with no in-class support.

Q: In my 2nd year of teaching, a student threw an orange peel at me while I was trying to teach at the front of the room. I didn't see who it was. What would you have done in that moment? I often look back on that and cringe because I had no idea what to do.

I wish I had had all of the resources about teaching when I started 30+ years ago. I always tell new teachers that everyday is on the job training with teaching. Education classes are just the bones; being in the classroom is the real education. I have never been bored and I everyday is different. My best teaching experience was teaching at a credit recovery high school. Once the students realized I was there to help them, they got on board with making up their credits in English class. Thanks for all the videos.
