In majority of the cases these people are encouraged to come to UK by whatever means, by the false & fabricated stories that people from their locality (currently in countries like UK) spin , either because they want people back home to think that they are living a luxurious lives or because they want to dupe such people of thousands of pounds in guise of valid Visa & work permit. In many cases some of these people are forced to travel to UK & Canada because of Local peer pressure and pressure from their parents who think their children are useless if they are unable to go abroad. The irony is that many of these people are actually quite well off in their state of Punjab in India , where they have ample farmland and very good earning. This lure to go abroad and become rich overnight makes them sell off these fertile lands and give the agents upward of 10,000 pounds to get a visa. and the sad part is, these agents either give them fake visa, or Tourist Visa or Student visa and most of the time these people realize it only after landing in countries like UK , Canada etc. Offcourse there are also those who knows from day 1 that they are going to travel and work illegally , but they are boldened by the fake promises and bravado of their scamming friends & agents. I know it sounds too strange to be true , but in majority of the cases that's what's happening. And many of these people could have earned a decent living back home by not selling off their land / house to sponsor their illegal trip.

People who enter a country...any country...illegally have got to be dealt with; the host country has every right to do so. We have to get over this idea that it is somehow unfair to call out and deal with people who have entered illegally. No, I am not saying you don't have the right to exist, I am saying you committed an illegal action for which you are accountable. As an American if I overstayed my visa anywhere I would fully expect to get deported. When I went to Canada on business, for example, Canadian border control every right to ask me what I was doing there and why, and would've been fully entitled to throw me out if I didn't go home when I said. I'm confused, patrol go through time, money and manpower to catch these ppl. When caught you do your thing and the release them only for them to try again. Money, time and manpower is wasted again only to repeat the process. Illegals think this is a game, laugh, smile and so it goes. Where is the solution, does anyone have unlimited funds for this and how much is too much? When will this grow old and ppl get tired of funding these games? Can't they return them to their country and place heavier fines on those driving/companies so that they will check there cargo after a stop rather than waiting for the officers doing their job? You definitely can. We are Canadian citizens and for my son, I have to send them the old passport so they can send a new passport to him. Don't remember if that is the issue for adults, but yes for the kids. They then send both passports back to you. So yes you can be separated from your passport for a period of time.
