I have a funny story to share... this was right after 9/11 happened. In Oct of same year, one month after 9/11, a group of us karate members were traveling to Japan with our Sensei, for a prearranged holiday tour. That must have been the safest plane out of the airport that day, with 50+ black belts on it! When we finish our tour and are headed back to the US from Japan, one guy in our group, an artist/sculptor, stand out from the rest. Most of us are dressed well, but he looked bohemian, an Anglo-American with a 2-day stubble beard, loose fitting clothes and a junky looking shoulder bag/tote. His hair looked scruffy, as he partied hard the night before in the Ginza strip in Tokyo. We knew him well, a 3rd degree black belt and tough fighter. The Japanese airport screening ladies did not view him favorably. Everyone else was dressed immaculately (this is Japan after all), including airport staff, all prim and proper in starched uniforms, and here was this vagabond in their midst. The nail that stands out gets hammered in. So of course he was pulled aside, and an in depth search ensued. We got nervous. The plane was leaving soon. What to do? I walked up to the ladies searching him and bowed. I pointed to this dude (one of our own) and whispered, "Karateka, Sandan" (karate practitioner, 3rd level Black). And the change was almost comic! They could not close his suitcase fast enough, while bowing profusely and apologizing to him. They carried the suitcase to the gate pronto! And let him board while bowing again and again. To this day, my karate friends don't know what I said to them to effect this transformation. And I'm still chuckling. Perceptions are everything.

Cazimir Silkovich The sad thing is that for every one they catch 5 or 10 might get through. Cooperation with programs like this is intended as a form of propaganda and they highlight successes and do not talk about failures, but the quantity of drugs on the street suggest that the seizures at ports are just the tip of the iceberg. The smugglers accept those that get caught as the cost of doing business. Essentially it is a mix of blind luck, and incompetent/nervous mules that get caught. The really clever concealments, and clever mules walk through undetected. I suspect that in some cases a stupid and nervous mule is sent through with the thought that if they get caught, they may be a good diversion to get a bigger load through immediately after, and if they don’t get caught it is extra profit. If so, then I feel sorry for the dummy who is often someone poor, being used by wealthy and unscrupulous puppet masters.
@artistjoh5 жыл бұрын
mdredmond71 What is your point? X-Rays from back-scatter scanners are a very low risk unless you are having large numbers of them. Do not confuse these low-energy back-scatter scanners with hospital high-energy X-rays. The hospital ones have very high resolution and produce enough X-rays to require the technician to retire behind a protective wall. You will notice that with these airport scanners the operator is not behind a wall because there is no need. The total dose from the scan is just 0.01 mrem/ which is less than a tenth of the dosage we all experience just walking around in our home or in the street, or even in a pristine wilderness for a day. During a typical flight the average passenger is exposed to around 4 mrem which is 40 times greater than than a scan. So while technically you are correct, no X-Ray is without risk, the risk in this case is so tiny that it is not possible to observe or measure. In a year you will have experienced around 365 mrems of background radiation vs a scan 0.01 mrems.

@williamjones71632 жыл бұрын
Carrying cash is not illegal. Carrying $200 in cash is not illegal. Carrying $2,000 in cash starts raising all sorts of flags and ringing all sorts of alarms. Carrying $10,00 more in cash starts law enforcement mouths dripping. We have a winner here.

@SantomPh Жыл бұрын
taking that much cash is a red flag for money laundering and tax evasion. These days even Indians and Africans can use Western Union and other remittance services instead of carrying thousands . If relatives give money (as is the custom sometimes) it has to be declared. These passengers did not declare their money, and were thus examined. Stop being a virtue signaller and know the law.

It's interesting that the governments of the countries of origin don't seem to care what leaves their countries to harm everywhere else in the world. Perhaps the authorities in reputable countries should start sending a bill to the countries they find are allowing illegal substances to leave

Since 9/11, in the vast majority of the world, bags and people are inspected on both ends of the journey, and suspicious contents/people are subjected to a more thorough search. That has happened to me multiple times over my adult life, with one outgoing instance taking nearly a half-hour of being questioned at security in public, and in an interrogation room in private (my plane wasn't set to leave for two hours (I always went to the airport with a ton of time, in case of bad traffic or conditions force a change in schedule/flight)), because, they said they were concerned at how I was dressed (track suit rather than normal clothing or business attire; before that, a friend said I looked like the Unabomer, so, that may have been the issue). Regardless, it's no big deal to the innocent, though, after the fifth such incident, and having a stewardess friend relate to me issues with insane passengers and poor airline maintenance, both inside and outside the plane, LONG before such became nearly casual occurrences, I no longer use mass transit.

... They do. They contact the home country, and the traveler is deported. If they are not convicted of a crime, it's a one-way trip back home, if wanted for arrest, they are held in custody until they are retrieved by the appropriate authorities.
