When Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to Dallas, TX in the early 1990s, she was attending a concert downtown. I worked downtown and I asked my boss if I could leave a bit early and go to see her, and he said I could. She was not doing a walk about, We were told we could see her enter and leave the concert hall, It was one if the hottest days I ever remember in May. After she arrived, a lady came out and said that the Queen wanted to let the people into the Hall to see her. The Dallas police were hysterical,. They said they didn't have enough security and to tell her no. I started to laugh. Can you imagine telling the Queen "NO?" Long story short, the doors were opened and we were all allowed to enter the Hall. She walked over to the crowds and talked to people all down the roped off corridor. Pr Philip came over to the ropes and actually shook some hands and spoke to the men. I will NEVER forget the thrill I felt, I was close enough that if I had leaned over, I could have touched her ( and got shot probably), but I knew better than to do so. I will never forget it.

At least you came away with a thrilled feeling. I remember that same year. I was living in Austin, Texas and the queen dropped in after her Dallas jaunt. After the formalities of the day, giving a speech at the Capitol and wandering around the grounds she was feted later that evening with a sumptuous banquet at the LBJ library. During that evening it was discovered that the sparkling wine being served was NOT champagne but a sparkler from California! The queen was incensed and refused to drink any sparkling wine that was NOT champagne! Lady Bird Johnson saved the evening having several cases of the French stuff hurriedly delivered to soothe the queens demands. I don't know if the champagne was vintage or not. I think it caused a slight wrinkle of embarrassment on the part of the caterers. Of course, if I had been in charge of the ceremonies, I would have strongly suggested that next time the queen bring her own wine to the table................................................

I am an American, I was five years old when she was coronated I watched the ceremony on American TV. Even at that very young age I knew that her majesty was a special person. I'm just an ignorant American so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why does the queen CARE what people think about her? She is the monarch not an elected official, she actually CAN'T be removed from office without a full on revolution, no? The monarchy is part of the British system of checks and balances. The British people should be supporting their Queen, and Prince William.
