We went through Fontainebleau when I was in High School. It was incredible. We had a great tour guide. The beds were surprisingly short. He said people were shorter then. The gardens are spectacular!

Also for a long time people would not sleep laying flat on the bed but more in a sitting position. Only the deads would be laid flat.

The large rooms make the beds deceivingly small. Believe me they are large beds. I’ve had the same thoughts when touring palaces and stately homes in England and even once asked why are the beds so small? I was quickly told the bed is 10 foot long and all of the luxurious pillows, upholstery and brocades make is seem smaller. Then we have to take into consideration the size of the bed frame around the mattress and the grandeur of the room which makes the actual sleeping space seem really squeezed down and shrunk. It’s really just an illusion but an unintended one.

There are many palaces and castles just as fascinating, if not even more so, than the main tourist attractions. Fontainebleau, Blois, Chenonceau, Saint Germain-en-Laye, and Chambord are stunning. I would visit those first before Versailles.

I agree with you. Though Versailles needs to be seen it suffers from over popularity which can ruin the experience. The best thing is to visit the Trianons in the grounds, they are wonderful and give a much better experience. The organised bus tours generally avoid these because of time considerations.

You know how it is: you inherit your folks' place, the home you grew up in and sure, you want to make a few improvements. It's pretty common. It's just a matter and question of scale, time and money. Joe Average adds on a wing. The new King of France adds on a lot.

I visited Fontainebleau many years ago so it was lovely to see it again. However, there are some historical errors. Philibert Delorme's staircase was not commissioned by Louis XIII. Delorme did the staircase for Francis I (Francois Premier) or Henri II. It is said to be in the mannerist style (prominent features are elongated). It's important that Delorme was French because the earlier artists/architects were hired by Francis from Italy. He wanted to be sure his gallery was truly renaissance style. He didn't need foreigners by the end of his reign to create renaissance structures, the French had adapted the renaissance style for French tastes. There is a chronological error. Henri IV 's grandfather was not Francois Ier. Henri IV's mother was Jeanne d'Albret, the daughter of Francois's sister Marguerite of Navarre. Francis had married off his sister to the Bourbon king of Navarre. The best that could be said is that Henri IV's uncle was Francois. None of this makes a difference to the beauty of Fontainebleau but it's nice if those involved get the credit for what they did.

Cheninceau was once owned by my ancestors prior to king Francis who is also one of my great grandfather's.Chenonceau was owned by the Boye family and was lost in a gambling debt,so the family history states .Some of The Boye family sailed off or were sent off to New France as explorers who were among the first white European people from France to settle present day Canada.

There is a mistake in the narration, Henry IV is NOT Francis' I grandson, Henry first marriage was to Margaret, grandaughter of Francis, being daughter of Henry II. Besides Henry IV was the first king of the House of Bourbon while Francis belonged to the House of Valois. Francis was grandfather of the the last 3 House of Valois Kings: Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III.

It was mostly in a time before even the most wealthy people didn't have indoor plumbing, very limited number of indoor toilets. What does one do? When you need to relieve yourself you have to let it out somehow. I have lived in huge houses, medium, small, houses, sizes in between. I have lived where servants were doing the work to keep it clean. Maids, gardeners, sewing ladies. I still like a smaller houses. You know, love grows best in little houses With fewer walls to separate Where you eat and sleep so close together You can't help but communicate Oh, and if we had more room between us, think of all we'd miss Love grows best, in houses just like this
