Great lesson, and the workbook looks very useful!! Living in the US, I often forget about cursive and that it's such a big part of learning Russian as a child 😅

How to learn Russian? I wouldn't say it's easy :D But we can try at least. Actually, I'm not even sure why people still need cursive with all the gadgets. Daria, this was great. I had watched your two other handwriting videos already today so I skipped to the end of this one. Seeing how you wrote words was very helpful. It would be great if you could make a new video for advanced beginners - one where you write sentences that we can copy. Have a lovely day!

Hello Daria. You are still the teacher who introduced me to Russian, I still can’t believe I can routinely sound out written Russian, can often deduce word or at least be armed to use translation software. Mesmerizing to watch this, I truly was thinking today I need to learn Cyrillic cursive (it’s very confusing otherwise). * it would have been helpful if you could show printed letter with each page, as I don’t know what letters are called so sometimes couldn’t figure out which you were writing. That said, I’m sure this will be useful. Thank you!

What a great comment! I forgot all about just simply learning the alphabet and the struggle that was. Watching those KZbin lessons meant the world to me, and were a great start.

I can't escape the feeling that Cyrillic cursive was explictly designed to maximise the amount of false friends for those native in a Latin script. As I understand it, it was standardized in the reign of Peter "the Great". That said, I have recently started learning the rules of spelling and pronunciation in the Polish language, and suddenly the Cyrillic alphabet feels much more like home for me!

Years ago I studied Russian in college, and *only* learned cursive! So I hope you will do another, similar video, showing us how to print the basic block capitals and lower-case. Thanks! It's fascinating how a Latin-alphabet user can learn Cyrillic in about half an hour, but then it takes years for Cyrillic reading speed to match Latin reading speed. KZbinr Steve Kaufmann has commented on how he found Polish easier than Russian for that reason. I'm curious, in Russian elementary schools, how early is the Latin alphabet taught, compared to Cyrillic? The thing that most fries my brain these days is when I see a new word or logo and cannot immediately tell if it's Latin or Cyrillic. The most common problem is trying to figure out if something is a P or Р (Latin Pee or Cyrillic Er).

Usually Latin alphabet is introduced to children at about 3-rd grade when they start learning foreign languages (mostly English, but there are shools that teach German of French, for example).

In our school we started to learn latin alphabet in 2 grade, but many kids start to learn english earlier because parents take additional lessons to make school lessons easier

Hi Daria, I have difficulty reading in lowercase, in Russian. all of a sudden it became crussial, because of an exhibition I've saw, which family pictures and diareis where pressented. And we also own in a family, old photography, old books, which peaple wrote down few words, at the back of the picture. Do you thing a practice in handwritng will improve reading ability?

Question: Is it currently more typically accepted to handwrite in cursive, or in block format? In English, especially in America, most people will sign their names in cursive, but for everything else that they have to write out longhand, they print. In fact on most standard forms they will specifically say to "please print." Is it the same for Russian? Спасибо большое за ещё одного хорошего урока! 😊😊😊😊

90% of ppl use cursive when they write something, print letters are more for kids (some of ppl that i know use something like mix print n cursive, because there handwriting are bad)
@biggusduckus6489 Жыл бұрын
Cursive goes faster and smoother when you write , writing in block letters slows you down , unless you have your own specific handwriting style that you are used to. As for blanks and forms, it’s the same in general, usually it’s a requirement to fill in such docs in block letters.

мишиш отличный пример, но еще хуже сочетания букв "т" и "ш". многие их помечают горизонтальной черточкой. если она сверху, то это "т", а если снизу, то "ш". но это всё пустяки по сравнению с пунктуацией, вот там настоящий ад.

I wished I had Daria as a teacher in my grade school, and now I'd probably be able to read at least my own handwriting ☺. Nevertheless Cyrillic still looks like a mess at first glance, and I don't dare to think what can happen once those letters connect to each other. 😬
