Based on stories from the Innocence Network, a worldwide organization dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted, this four-part series explores the investigations that unjustly led individuals to prison, the battles to revisit their cases, new investigations and the human cost: the emotional impact experienced by those convicted and their families.
1. Barry Gibbs Case: A Vietnam vet maintains his innocence after being accused of strangling a prostitute in 1986.
2. The Lewis Jim Fogle Case: Having already served 34 years for murder and sexual assault convictions, a man has a chance at freedom with DNA testing.
3. The Alan Newton Case
Sentenced to 40 years in prison, a man starts studying law to decipher his file and prove his innocence.
4. The George Toca AKA "Chicken" Case
New Orleans, 1984. A 17-year-old is sentenced to life in prison for his friend's accidental shooting death.

The folks at the Innocence Project are absolute heroes. I cannot imagine being let down by your peers, your neighbors, by your own country as a whole. I’m sure we all think “since I didn't do the crime surely there's no way they will-no way they CAN- convict me of it, right?” Well, folks you would be dead wrong! These people are all proof of that. The breech of trust, the feeling of defeat and hopelessness one must feel when in that situation… I seriously cannot imagine. Being in jail or prison is one of the absolute WORST things that can happen to a person. I seriously don't think people understand the toll that it takes on a person. It changes something in you. It does something to your soul, it does damage that cannot be reversed. It's truly a horrific, horrific experience. I don't think people understand; nor should they. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I've been to jail and it still affects me every single day-and I wasn't even in there for long! Jail should ONLY be reserved for the absolute worst of humanity. It shouldn't be for people we are mad at, it should be for people we are deathly afraid of. Not people who drive on a suspended license, or people who owe money for child support. It also shouldn't be so easy to lock someone up and throw away the key. Barry could be your brother, your father, your son. Barry could be YOU. This could happen to YOU. Let's just think about this for a second, yes Barry is out now. However, he lost a huge chunk of his life that he will never get back. He lost out on years and years and years of working a job and being able to save for retirement, he has no work history. No marketable skills. Important time where one pays money into social security and gains valuable work experience. He lost out on being able to have children, have grandkids, have a wife or a husband. He wasn't able to buy a home during a time where a person working full-time is all it took to be able to afford one. Something needs to give. This should NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. An innocent person should not have to spend their precious years in a cage.

100% EVERYTHING YOU SAID. So spot on about how prison is so traumatizing and should only be reserved for the violent worst of the worst. I always think of Christian’s Randall in You Tube, a special girl who now is successful doing crime videos but she started several years ago posting videos of what happened to her in prison. She talks about a pretty evil dentist who worked on her…. Now that I said that, he literally worked ON TOP OF HER. She had a painful tooth that needed extracting. He climbed on top of her and put his knee in her chest and gave her NO pain killers and ripped her tooth out of her mouth and she could tell he was evil and enjoyed hurting and traumatizing her. That’s just one story. People don’t realize what an evil and terrifying place jail is because you are at the mercy and locked away from ANY KIND OF HELP, of these correctional officers and a lot of them have MEAN STREAKS and probably should be behind bars themselves. Sorry for the long post here but I love everything you said here. I think about this so often now.

Damn. So sad what happened to him. The lawyers at the Innocent Project are some of the biggest heroes in our world for sure. It’s insane to see how many corrupt cops were in all positions of NYPD. Like that detective Louis Scarcella. 20 people have had their convictions vacated in Scarcella's homicide cases, after more than 400 combined years of imprisonment, Prosecutors and judges have explicitly cited evidence of his improper conduct, in criminal cases involving at least 12 wrongfully convicted defendants, and legal settlements have surpassed $100 million dollars and he’s not even in prison is INSANE to me. Absolutely insane.

I have seen so much corruption in law enforcement, prosecutors and judges I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in the justice system. Prosecutors are suppose to make sure they are not prosecuting any case where there is the possibility that the person is innocent but most of them are working towards a goal of 100% conviction rate of the highest number of cases. They don't actually care if you are innocent. They will do anything to get you to take a plea on a case you did not have anything to do with. Judges are suppose to be the gate keeper. To oversea what law enforcement has done and what the prosecutor is proceeding with. But they are sitting there waiting for the case to end and rubber stamp it. From warrants that never should have been signed off to locking up innocent people. No such thing as justice in The USA.

It is better to have a guilty person outside than having an innocent person in prison. I can't even imagine that horror and pain that these people went through and my heart is breaking to hear these stories. Those years can never be given back to those people and their families.

That is also a big fear of mine, being accused wrongly.. One time my brother called me in panic asking what I have done, it was a Sunday noon, I was in my pjs and I thought he was messing with me. He said “you killed someone with the car?” and he was crying.. I froze, even if it was a Saturday night, I had exams coming so I spent all evening studying and went to bed. So I immediately opened my cam to prove I m home in my pjs 1600 Km away. He said police called and they had my ID and details. I live in Central Europe, but I m from South Europe, I had recently visited my hometown so I immediately started looking my National ID which I never use cause I use my local one where I live, thinking I might lost it at my hometown and someone used it trying to frame me. After speaking with my brother we realised it was an attempt to extort money, they didn’t have my ID, my mom panicked when she heard a girl cry at the phone and she gave all my details without realizing it, they asked for money as standard process and she said yes, she didn’t think at all clearly but she panicked and it’s understandable.

Sadly I to am falsely convinced of a crime that never happened. My case is so obviously a miscarriage of justice it's just stupid. Even though I'm out the pain doesn't just go away. Last year I tried to commit suicide over this and I still have the same thoughts. I could use the help of these attorneys to get this case removed from me so I can go to work and find a place to live. I currently live under a bridge (homeless)

I am so sorry for you and where you are having to live. I contacted the Innocence project for my son who was charged and convicted for something that he did not do and I have evidence of it but the prosecutor, defense attorney, sheriff, police department and the entire justice system is so messed up and corrupt. I have been without my son for the last 2 years and he still will not be released until January of 25. When I speak to him every other day I can tell how it has changed him dramatically because being there and not doing the crime is so horrible. No one will listen to me Even the FBI will not talk to me about his incarceration. The state police are the people who are supposed to investigate the corruption of our system here in my county but they have to be asked to do this from the attorney general and I can't even get them to call me back for any reason. Don't know what else to do

@@peppiholliday4525 I want to say good luck to your appeals through the innocent project. The criminal courts have become very political and it is very difficult to reverse and remain cases. After my conviction I taught myself law and it is very difficult to get any judge in any court whether it's state quarter federal court to reverse and remand it is the fault of Congress they are the ones that make it difficult because no judge wants to sign the papers to reverse a remand

Yeah. What an amazing moment. Especially to be caught on camera. I can’t believe he was convicted after a schizophrenic mentally ill man in a mental hospital who was the actual murderer who was under hypnosis after changing his story tons of times over a five-year period was how he was convicted, especially after the DA drop the charges on all four of the other ones and he was the only one to be charged. I’d like to know if the DA or leading investigator had a personal vendetta against this guy in one fashion or another.. our judicial system is so freakin broken it’s frightening. Idk how a jury could hear this and think he’s guilty. Just insane and sad all around.

Jails don't make money unless they "fill beds." The jailers go to the judge and say we have ten beds available. That is why the judge ignores the Constitution and sets excessive bail and your Right to a speedy trial. Also, they say it's an honor to be on a jury, but why? The judge tells the jury to follow the law, but why do they need to take 12 people out of their busy lives, sit them in a room, and have them nod to each other, "well, the law says he's guilty, we must find him guilty." The judge can just do that himself. No, it's called Jury Nullification! It is an honor to be on a jury because in the United States the People are in charge! When someone goes on trial that law also goes on trial. The jury can change that one law, not every law, but that one law-- if they feel it's a bad law! That is why it's such an honor!!

I believe in our state eye witness testimony is not enough with corroborating evidence. Glad we have better tools. Now we need honest and truly thorough law enforcement. No tunnel vision. No corruption or courts and prosecutor who rely on revenue or conviction stats to get reelected. Equal funds to defense for lawyer and expert testimony.

How is the judge supposed to know?? He makes his decision based on evidence.. he had a witness on the spot identifying him. For me is the witness, what kind of person you have to be to live 19 years knowing you sent an innocent man in prison? Okay, you were afraid at that moment, you were afraid one month later, one year later, but wtf if the cop was not arrested the man would have never told the truth. He slept every night knowing what he had done

@@annas4843 If any decisions were based in any way on any evidence there would be ZERO convictions of the innocent. What judges and courts are designed to do is get as many convictions as they can, they do not care that they are setting innocent people up, they're job is to get prosecutions, which just another reason why capitalism doesn't work.

Amazing work and amazing men, really this show gives me back faith in God's justice that sometimes takes time to manifest itself, but is inexorable! it is remarkable that Innocence Project doesn't charge those they defend! I think this is absolutely honorable and that's the way it should be, because justice shouldn't be possible only for those who can pay for it! The personal relationship that develops between the attorneys and these men is amazing! This is really God's work on earth! thank you for making this world a better place! I pray that Alan can fulfill his dream to study law and help other people in the same predicament and I pray for George's healing for the shameful crime of imposing a confession on him to avoid paying for compensation. After seeing the Michael Morton story.. the man in Texas, who went to work one morning, and being arrested for the brutal murder of his wife, when he got off.. it is impossible to not realize this can happen to anyone. A prosecutor, a sheriff… who absolutely have no regard for the truth, the next thing he knows, he is serving a life without parole sentence….. and miraculously 25 years later, these beautiful people help him get his freedom.. I can never watch a story like Barry’s…. Without a tear in my eye… it is so wrong.. and it happens way more than people realize. The innocence project is doing God’s work, you can’t help but to love them 💙

I have a friend who got arrested twice because he had the same first & last name as a guy with a lengthy rap sheet. The last time he spent a week in jail for stealing a lawnmower & a case of beer. They finally realized the mistake & let him go but his work fired him thinking he was a thief. He spent thousands in attorney fees trying to get it off his record but he ran out of money & was unable to get it expunged.

Alan, just so proud of him, he got a scholarship & graduated, very smart man, to do studies in prison was such a good thing to do. Hope he gets his compensation, wish him & his family, brothers lots of happiness, health & love & success in life. ❤. George’s story got to me pretty badly, after all those years & detectives knew he was innocent when the lawyers showed them their case I think is why they offered that DISGUSTING plea offer they knew then they don’t lose face but George loses 40 yrs & he is a convicted felon, so wrong. Is why I’m so glad George was smart & ambitious & is doing so well. Keep doing all that makes you happy George, wish him much success & happiness and good health & a wonderful love! 🤗❤️🙏
