"Kids On The Edge" triple episode
Ep 1 - Our children are struggling to know how to live in today's world. Unprecedented numbers are being diagnosed with mental health disorders, medicated, or are facing a crisis of identity. For almost 100 years the Tavistock and Portman has been at the forefront of exploring young minds. This series, with exclusive access to the Trust, goes behind Tavistock's doors for the first time.
Ep 2 - The specialist team of teachers, mental health nurses, therapists and support workers work intensively with its 18 students, many of whom have been excluded from mainstream schools. The programme follows 11-year-old Josh in his last term at the school. He was adopted when he was six, but his traumatic early years have been worked through in his time at the school.
Ep 3 - Self-harm and suicide are major public health problems for teenagers. Although boys are by no means immune, one in three UK teenage girls is now said to report symptoms of anxiety or depression. A&Es describe a surge in teenagers who seek treatment for their self-harming injuries, and they are predominantly girls. This episode tells the stories of two teenage girls who have repeatedly harmed themselves, and shows the support they receive from Tavistock clinicians.

I am 16 years old and I lost my granddad in 2020 when I was 12 and have been self harming and trying or wanting to since then. I'm getting better with therapy and the support of my family. To anyone out there that is in this position, YOU ARE WORTHY, BRAVE, LOVED AND IMPORTANT.

I lost my grandmother around the same time. And I recently lost my dad. I’ve been SH for years now. It’s like an addiction. That constant relief after. But not always. And definitely not the way of loving yourself, and taking care of yourself like you would a friend.

When i worked as a complex needs, mental health within learning disability nurse, one of our young care assistants used to self harm. She lived in the shadow of her twin sister, who was a qualified nurse. It was hard to watch her deteriorate, even with "therapy", and one day, she never came back to work. I never saw or heard of her again, that was 25 years ago.

You can never give someone the love they are missing- that eluded them in their past. For, even if their absent, neglectful parent resurfaced to shower them with all the love they never gave in the past- the very love the person feels they’re missing- the time for that has past. There is but one way to fill that hole, which is to come to love oneself. If one can lead another down the road to coming to love themselves, they will again, be completed.

one of the things i've noticed is when i'm watching this compaired to when i was training and with these guys, when the children are mad/angry in the pad room etc whatever you call it, when they're in that state, you cannot reason with them properly until the're calm, and then you start tallking to them because when they're in the state of anger they won't listen to you, they will not take on board what you have just said, and as soon as they're calm they will talk to you in their own time, where as none of these adults do that, you just have to be patient and wait for them to cam down 100% trust me it works.

i feel so bad for the parents that haven’t dealt with this before and trying to understand and help it’s so painful for them to see their children self destruct but at the same time i understand so much as i have been in this mindset before and know from experience that it is out of our control and i never wished to hurt or upset my parents but once again it’s like it isnt me in my head or body. my heart goes to everyone

I have no idea how my mum survived all of the years I put her through. But I’m glad that we came out of it on the other side together. She stuck by me through all of the fights and highs and lows and now 10 years later I’ve been lucky enough to find kind healthcare professionals to help me understand what was happening to my brain in that time. That can be the hardest part after you lose trust in healthcare workers after one bad experience when you’re in a vulnerable place

I wish I could reach out and hug these kids and tell them how beautiful and special they are and so important and let them vent and hit me and let it all out. Im 42, severely autistic currently non verbal and my whole body is covered in scars. I know I understand. It is not something most people understand. These kids need to feel really truly heard, they fear loss and abandonment, they fear judgement and that everything they do think and say will be wrong. They do not know where they fit into it all, they are lacking love and empathy purpose and hope. We need to help them find out what matters them the most and who they really are and take it one step at a time, not letting them down again. Help them find a solid place in the world, teach them how to ground themselves and build them up in confidence. Celebrate what they are good at what they CAN do and they can do so much more than even they know. Many have been abused and won't tell you. Some may not even know they have been abused till later. It's inside though torturing them. They want you to SEE the pain inside. They do not want to die they want to want to live and everyone lets them down. They loose hope.

Giving them hormones, dresses, haircuts, pronoun changes is not the answer, just a bandage making the parent feel better ..###livedthroughnaturaldevelopmentofthe dynamicsofidentity.

@@IszyChurch I honestly think that even if you have a mental illness that is not an excuse to, for example, write on the walls, like you´ve got papers to do so... or for example to have to physically get your mum to remove a sharp object from your hands when you know you are not allowed to have it... I think in her case it´s a mix of both.... having mental issues with lack of boundries because "poor girl she´s got problems so I can´t set boundries"... I´ve seen that parents with teens who have mental health problems act as if they couldn´t tell their kid "no" because they feel pitty for them... and it ends up making the situation worse cos they use the initial problem to get away with everything... (sorry if there are grammatical or spelling mistakes on it... I´m not an English native speaker)
