I'm one of those old guys. I've been watching the NBA since the late 70s. Larry Bird is hands down the best small forward ever. Not just his shooting, passing, rebounding. He was tough and never quit. Don't forget he played his last six seasons with the back injury that would have retired anyone else. Remember he played only 13 seasons. That is almost half his career bad back. Not a sore back, a bad back. Sometimes he would spend the night in the hospital with a back brace, get treatment, and then play the following day.

Larry was a better shooter, rebounder, and had more assists than Jordan. As you read these career stats, just keep in mind, that Jordan played 2 more seasons than Bird did (175 games), and also played in what was considered a weaker conference. Not only that, Bird played his last 4 years with debilitating injuries, and missed all but 6 games of the 88-89 season. And again, he was in the stronger league, in the most talent rich era in NBA history. He is the only player beside Wilt and Bill Russell, to win 3 in a row....and the only player in history, to win a championship, MVP, coach of the year, and executive of the year. Bird was never the center of any drama or pettiness, and played his entire career with the Celtics, winning championships with whoever the management brought on. All things equal, and if Bird would have been healthy those other 4 years, he would have a legitimate claim as the best player ever. If I was building a team and had to pick between either player in their prime, I would pick Bird.

He's a legit six nine and a half, and in his five year prime he averaged 50/40/90. Not every year - overall for the five years. Pretty good for a small forward who had both an inside and outside game, and was something like 27/10/7 in that period with 3 consecutive MVPs and multiple rings.

Larry Bird is the best all-around player in NBA history I didn't say GOAT because I don't what makes someone the GOAT. Before I get into why Bird is the best all-around ever here is an interesting stat involving Shaq. During his career Shaq averaged 10.9 rebounds per game, Bird average 10.0 rebounds per game. However Shaq averaged 7.4 defensive rebounds per game, Bird averaged 8.0 defensive rebounds per game. Pretty good for a guy who supposedly was slow and couldn't jump. Now on to why he is the best all-around of all time. Field goal % Free throw % Points per game Assists per game Rebounds per game Steals per game Bocks per game Minutes per game Win % of games played in Bird is in the top 250 NBA players of all time in all of those categories. Do you know how many other NBA players can say that? ZERO And in 7 of the 9 categories Bird is in the top 60 NBA players of all time. Do you know how many other NBA players can say that? ZERO Bird could do it all. Even his "trash" talking wasn't trash talking. He just told the other team what he was going to do and dared them to stop him, which the vast majority of the time, they could not. Think about this. In a game against the Lakers with time running out, Bird told the Lakers what the exact play was, what he was going to do and where he was going to shoot from and then went out and hit the game winning 3pt shot from exactly where he said he would. That's very impressive, but consider this, Bird did this against the following Lakers who were on the floor at the time - Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Michael Cooper and Byron Scott - that makes what Bird did nothing less that unreal.

Every time I heard that my Lakers were playing Boston, I got sober. We had a ridiculous starting 5 then, but Larry was THE problem. The rest of the Celtics were good, but Bird was far beyond that. He was at least on par with Magic, the best we had (IMO). We weren't surprised when he dropped 40+ on us. It really came down to blocking his passing lanes, which was another problem because he manufactured new lanes on the fly. I'll never cheer for the Celtics but I cannot deny the elite talent of Larry Bird. He was one of the best ever.

I have to say Gentlemen, I love your respectful discussion about Larry Bird, he simply is top 5 ever. despite rule changes , styles ect , the greats would be great in any era . I quit watching the NBA because of the loss of the intensity and defensive try , the NBA of history was a battle of offence and defense and a chess game largely, there are no doubts about the great athletes in today's game, but I think most would struggle to excel in the earlier game, however the greats of today would certainly adapt to the previous game, but if an honest analysis of then and now is done, (example) , the brutal contact, the physical game in the paint ect is a heck of a hurdle to deal with mentally, once again, great discussion, cuddos men.

Was Bird the greatest? I dunno. That is subjective. But if I were grafting all time greats I would pick Bird #1 because he always made every player better. Team mates loved playing with Bird. They revere him to this day. We was Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and NBA Executive of the Year. Nobody else has done that

Healthy Prime Larry Bird is arguably one of the best basketball players of all time. Unfortunately, he dealt with injuries and his career wasn't fully realized, and he's still in the mix.

Magic Johnson made the Lakers 'Showtime', he is a top 5 player of all time, and Kareem a top 5 player and is the number 1 center of all time. They were great players to watch. Larry Bird is a top 5 player of all time; the Showtime Lakers had 2 top 5 players of all time, while the Celtics had 1 top 5 player of all time. Charles Barkley should just admit he'd be 2nd string to Larry. It isn't close.

Larry Legend was not fast, he could not sky, but he mastered the fundamental game of basketball, He was a team player, he was smart and he could shoot the lights out of any arena. Double teaming him was a huge mistake,' he would find the open man with some spectacular no look pass. He would stay after practice and shoot 500 lay ups, free throws, wherever, until he perfected that shot, and he knew every square inch of the floor. He deserves hands down to be considered in the top 5 of the all time category. I'd take Larry over LeBron all day. He was that good.

My problem with this goat bs is this generation is watching a small sample of Bird. We watched his career along with James Curry etc. Larry would eat today’s nba alive. These comparisons are lame unless you watched there careers. It’s like me comparing Shaq to Wilt I never seen Wilt play nor is there much video. I have seen a lot of clips where they ask different retired and current players their top 5... Most of them listed them at the different positions like a starting lineup... Wilt, Bill Ruusell, Magic, MJ, Kareem, LeBron and the like... All of them pick Larry Bird 3rd at the 3 position... I have Bird top 3 all time, so with most of the best putting him 3rd at the 3 kinda solidifies my top 3 "opinion"... Plus, I have been watching since the early 70's and watched Larry starting in college and met him after a game through some guys I went to school with that played against him... I cut down watching as much around in early 2000 as the game / players changed and got too soft... Back in the day the physicality is what made for the closer and more thrilling games and separated the great players... Just My Humble Opinion...

The highest praise anyone ever given him is probably James Worthy saying "Id much rather guard Jordan than Bird". Im quite surprised they didnt included that clip. There is also the Isiah Thomas clip saying between himself, Magic, Jordan and Bird, Larry would probably be the last man Standing. The get alot of people discrediting it saying Isiah is just a Jordan hater and thats why he said that. While thats true he was not a very big fan of Larry either and he was best fakking buddies with Magic or he couldve been his normalt cocky self and name himself as the last man Standing. I highly recommend you watch the playoffs from the 80's - react to ENTIRE games with the Celtics...and there are better highlight reals that really showcase his skill with passing, rebounding, shooting and outright hustle...I don't think he respects very many of the current players - way too much flopping and not enough skill, given their athleticism.
