Larry was 3x league MVP, three years in a row. Most of the other years he came in 2nd in votes. And he ate rookies for breakfast. One time rookie Reggie Miller was talking to Larry while Larry's at the free throw line. Larry told him, "listen rook, I'm the best f-ing shooter in the league. In the league, understand? And you're going to tell me something??" I would love to see Larry playing in today's 3-point focused league. He'd probably rival Curry in that area. As a passer/assister he's nearly unrivaled. Of course Magic is great and John Stockton is untouchable for assists, but Larry's passing was unreal. Speaking of Stockton, he tells a story of Larry going to the Utah bench before a game and saying "yeah I feel like...43." Then walking away. And he scored 43 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. I mean, who talks to entire opposing benches like that?

Bird just literally outsmarted everybody he played against. i Saw his whole career and dont remember him making a bone headed decision even once. Most people also didnt realize that he played most of his career with chronic back pain. This finally caught up to him with the olympic dream team and had to be on the sideline lying down on his stomach during practice. Bird also had suffered a cracked knuckle that hindered his play before his NBA career even started. The injured knuckle was on his shooting hand.

You should check out the "Making the case" series by Clayton Crowley. He has 8 players he considers has a substantial claim to being the GOAT. Bird, Jordan, Magic, LeBron and Tim Duncan are in there, I dont remember who the other 3 were. Kobe and Kareem Im pretty sure. Its a really well made series and he has really valid points. The whole Idea is that he cant give you a definitive answer to who is actually the best. Its too nuanced, all he does is make the argument. Also check out "5 times Larry was injured and refused to quit". It was the nail on the coffin for me when putting him in my top5. Knowing he went through all that shit and was STILL an all time great? The man was not human, Im telling you, its friggin scary.

Top 5 dead or alive, best SF to ever suit up. He cooked everybody who was anybody. The left handed game was mad disrespectful! Portland was the only visiting team to win in Boston that year, and he comes to the Rose Garden on Valentines Day, announces he’s ‘saving his right hand for the Lakers’ and proceeds to actually play 3 quarters left handed except a few long jumpers. 22 points legit left handed, 47 total including a game winning buzzer beater in a game that actually mattered. He’d just killed my Sonics again a couple days before. Man I was happy when he retired!

Larry was the best ever for 3 years. Short career and injuries make it hard to say he was the best ever. But definitely top 5 for his career. He is the only one from 1980 to 1992 that could say he beat every guy in the playoffs. Kareem, Magic, Jordan, Pippen, Ewing, Hakeem, Dr J, Moses, Barkley, Moncrief, Isiah, Dumars, Rodman, Reggie Miller. Crazy part is he beat a bunch of them when his back was shot and after he had 2 ruptured Achillies tendons. Jordan was 0-6 in 2 series against Bird.

Listen, I've watched Basketball since the 70's. Thus far no one in my mind has surpassed Bird's basketball genius mind. Larry is still the goat in my mind. Bird's era had many many top all stars on opposing teams and they played rough unlike today, yet he still came on top. He made the basketball what it is till today. Today's team is a joke compared to Bird's era. As Magic Johnson stated on Bird's retirement that there will never never ever be an another Larry Bird, Bird is the best player ever. Even Michael Jordan and Pat Riley the Laker's coach stated that he would pick Michael Jordan to take the last shot to win the game but would pick Bird to take the last shot to save his life. None of the all star players could guard him. He made some unbelievable and no look passes that other players try to copy, he was the best 3 point shooter, he stole the ball almost every game and he definitely is one of the best clutch player with his last second game winning shots. I can go on. LARRY IS THE GOAT PERIOD!

Bird played against all the legends, except the old-ass dudes like Wilt. In them years he got 3 consecutive MVPs, in a league with Magic, Kareem,MJ, the bad boy Pistons, Dr. J, Barkley... That's not all, in his first year he got RotY and 4th in MVP voting, after that he was 2nd for 3 years, then won it 3 years in a row, then 2nd again 3 years in a row, then missed all but 2 games of the season after that because of operations on both achilles, then was voted into the Allstar team his last year in the league. I totally agree with what Clayton Crowley says in his "Making the case" video, had he had today's medicine he could have easily played well in his fourties, at GOAT levels at that.

Duncan v Bird is hard because they are so different and play different positions. Thing to note: Larry had 3 MVPs in a row at a time when he played Michael, Magic, Kareem, the Bad Boy Pistons, Dr. J and Moses Malone... To me, the more interesting talk is Bird v Lebron as the best SF. By average Bird is the easy pick, but the sheer longevity of LeBron is hard to look past. Simple answer, yes. Larry took less than 2 or 3 - 3 point attempts a game. He would obliterate today's soft league and expose guys like Curry. Curry is an average guard without the 3 point line. He would have sat the bench ion the 80's cause he's soft af. DJ would have shut his ass down. Without the 3 line, what he gonna do, go to the hole with The Chief, McHale and Bird in the post. No he ain't. The 3 line has ruined the game so bad, coaches aren't even needed. Today's NBA looks like guys playing in college before coach showed up for practice in 80s college hoops. Bird fundamentals would destroy today's players. Best all around player ever.
