The recording is pretty straightforward, the track end points can be set in two ways: a. on a beat, via alt+1 and selecting the track you want to change the endpoint / or b. Via the steptime editor (alt+mode) where you can set/clear a track endpoint on any step by pressing digit 9

And I guess you dis record automation in realtime to a separate track, and (re)allocate the destination port after that?
