I'm astounded by the possibilities within this inexpensive DAW, and also by the amount of knowledge and training you've provided for the community. Kenny Gioia is rightfully regarded as the patron saint of Reaper haha. Regarding the pricing, Cockos's policies are a bit different, but very refreshing. The actual full license is $250, and that is a much more accurate representation of it's power and capabilities. It just so happens the company doesn't feel the need to squeeze that out of people who aren't professionals or give them a crippled version for a cheaper price (reducing tracks, not allowing 3rd party plugins etc). The only two DAWs i have seen companies require experience for are Pro Tools and Reaper. There's definitely a reason for that.

@@nomepredefinito1174 .. My first software was C-Lab's Notator for Atari computers, in the late 1980's. Then Cakewalk, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo for scoring film. I had the first iteration of Pro Tools in the mid 1990's. I've used Reason since version 3, Acid Pro, Soundforge and Adobe Audition (even since it was called Cool Edit Pro). I was certified in the early days of Studio One to install in major studios, as an attempt to dislodge Pro Tools from the industry standard. I used Digital Performer for nearly a decade, and AudioDesk as a free alternative for my students. I've dug into FL Studio since it was Fruity Loops. I've used MAX since it was owned by Opcode, and have built my own software using other OOP languages, like Super Collider and Pure Data. I've used ridiculous modular software like AudioMulch, MetaSynth and Reaktor. I've used trackers like Renoise and hybrids like Jeskola Buzz. I just said all of that to say this.. Ableton Live is the be-all and end-all of creative musical experiences. It's like an organic, living being, with so many ways to accomplish the same task, that users conform the workflow to suit their creative needs. As a decades-long user, I can still possibly learn new things from a user of six months. In all of its complexity, it is still staggeringly simple to use and operate, even for a newb. So yeah.. Not likely to uninspire. :)

Again, I spent 2 hours today researching how to force mapping to an outgoing channel. Geist responds differently depending on the incoming channel. 2 hours I could've saved by watching yet another legendary Kenny video that gave me the answer: midi tool v2. I would have given up on Reaper a long time ago but for you Kenny. Humble thanks.

Excellent video Kenny. You just gave me the solution to a few problems I was dealing with lately. I wasn't aware of the Midi Tool v2 plugin. I've been using EZKeys for creating keyboards tracks but have found that some of the performance tracks are of extremely high velocity & overpowering. It's a great program & easy to work with providing very professional sounding tracks. This plugin will help me tweak & fine tune these tracks. I was forced to go into the Midi editor & lower the velocities from there which is a royal pain. Secondly with MidiControl you gave me another idea. Since I'm not a piano player but a guitarist who still creates keybd parts with a midi control from time to time, I can take advantage of the transpose setting which will allow me to play in a simpler key like C & transpose the part up to say Eb! This will come in handy on a few songs I'm working on now. Great stuff! Thanks Eric

Excellent video!! thanks for all the amazing info that you are sharing with us. May I ask something? I found that one of the weakness of Reaper is how it manage the Midi CC info. As a composer, we use to use big templates with lot of kontakt sample libraries that are play using an external midi keyboard with midi controllers with midi CC associated. I'd like to record notes and Midi CC but being able to record the midi CC info that comes from my external controller to the Envelope lanes directly and not be saved into the inline midi editor (clip). I've read the it must be done with some tricks using Reacontrolmidi or other JsFX.. but I was not able to do that without having problems of cc glitches and so.. I'd really appreciate if you could make a video for this issue (I think it would be the only one in youtube talking about this). Thank you very much

I can't get this program change etc to work to save my life. I have tried with 5 different vst's now. Is it supposed to show the program change in the logs if you have the check marks clicked (e.g. Log meta-messages etc)? Transpose does work, the controls like mod wheel etc.! Just not program (preset) change.

Hi Kenny! When I do this with Kontakt VIs, all the CC information is also recorded. So, when I go to adjust the envelope in the automation lane, the CC Lane Data interferes with it unless I delete it. Is there a way around this other than manually deleting the CC info every time? Love your videos!

I misunderstood the question. The thing I'm using is another program called MIDIkeys. It's for Mac but PC probably has something similar. I don't think the Virtual Keyboard is meant for that.

Hi, Thank You for Great Work. A question: how can I add a key in the MIDI editor? For example, I want to add a 13th semitone, E # key black, to the 12 semitones, so a scale composed of C - C # - D - D # - E - E # - F - F # - G - G # - A - A # - B . Then adding E # both in the MIDI editor and in the Piano Roll. Thank You

you cant. you only have the keys that are available in 12 tone equal temperament. there is no E# black key. E# is enharmonic with F natural. E# is a white key my friend. however E# would rarely be used in a real musical context. the key's of F# and C# Major are the only keys with an E#. but in almost all cases we would use Gb and Db respectively, as to avoid unnecessary confusion with the written music.

@@DeusNosSalvet Thanks for the reply. It is not true that it "would rarely be used". If a composer had software adapted to create and customize different musical scales (including microtones) he could consequently create new music, new ideas. The composer's inspiration himself will do the rest. In my opinion it would be a good idea to create music editor software that gives you the ability to write music with multiple semitones. Unfortunately, conventional music is still a bit limited on this aspect (or European music more than anything else), most of the software included. A matter of time and it will happen. @@MarcoScorbati i see now more what you were meaning, microtonality is pretty cool. and i have not figured out how to program half/double sharps and flats. other than de-tuning each note by cents. but afaik C# and F# Major are "ugly" keys because of those enharmonic I mentioned. and in my classical training I have never seen someone use those keys above their easier to notate equivalents. I believe these are classically referred to as "theoretical keys" they expand your knowledge but their application is extremely limited. when it comes to manuscripts the key sig golden rule is only 1 version of each note. which makes scales a maximum of 7 notes. that isn't to say you cannot break this rule, and many of my favorite scales do use double notes. but trying to actually notate a song like that or spot read it is unnecessarily difficult. in reality there are no rules, but in practice there certainly is and if you were to hand an instrumentalist a confusing and messy manuscript with multiple notes slammed up into each other on a single ledger line/space. they might just hand it right back. but on the topic of microtonality pianoteq kicks ass for this. sometimes what i will do is setup another keyboard ontop of my main guy like an organ. and then detune the top keyboard, effectively giving me like a 24 tone temperament.

I believe that if there was a much broader software and also focused on the possibility of customizing both the musical scales and the graphics of the piano roll, every artist (if he wants) could create many interesting things. Example: I open the program and decide to create music with 13 semitones, I customize the piano roll and insert the keys where I prefer. Then I also customize the frequency / note parameters. In the sense, I decide whether to give the A the 440hz or another frequency, and so on. Much more expansion and creativity. In short, a not insignificant but not impossible change.

@@MarcoScorbati I like it, please do let me know if you find a software like this!! I would be very interested in trying it. Im not sure all of what you can do with pianoteq but it might be the closest thing. To just have the VST de tunes and then work in the normal piano roll and just remember what each note is detuned by. I know it's not quite what you're looking for. I just personally don't know of a better alternative for piano rolls inside a DAW. Musescote and Guitar Pro can notate things like this and I believe you could than import the midi but I got a feeling as soon as it hits the DAW it will get rid of all the microtonal adjustments and revert back to the default 12 tone. Cool idea you got though man, if you know how to code I suggest making your own piano roll. Might also be able to easily modify the default Reaper roll to do something like this. With how fantastically easy it is to modify Reaper in anyway you want. And the easy access to python, c++ and reascript built right in. In not well verse in the cubase logical editor but I've heard great things. Personally speaking Reaper is the best midi editor I've used. Not OOTB. But with a little work and attention to details it blows any other I've tried out of the water. Just throwing ideas at you man, good luck on your hunt for something I agree would be beneficial to have!!
