always amazing. you have taught me not to fear the routing matrices of doom, lol. it's almost overwhelming what reaper can do, but you make everything understandable and fun, so much that one feels inclined to go right out and do what they just learned in your "class". thanks again

I think complex signal routing on a computer screen is best implemented and best managed visually using a patch cord UI like some effect pedals do it. I imagine a modular DAW UI in which routing happens on a canvas on which every process is a block/node and signal is directed into and out of these nodes with aforementioned patch cords. This would eliminate the notion of fixed channels with auxes and inserts and replace it with a freeform signal path. If you need a delay simply drop it onto the canvas and wire it up to suit your needs

I keep URL's and titles to videos, that I think I'll use later, in a Notepad file. I added (Channel Mapper-Downmixer) to the title as I saved this one, to make it clearer to me when I look it back up. You might consider editing this video to include "using Channel Mapper-Downmixer" in either the title or the description.

Thank you for the explanations, Kenny! To me Reaper's internal routing has always been a somehow 64-channel (mono) or 32-channel stereo sub-Mixer+FX-Container. Very similar to how in Reason we could put the mixer in a Container plugin and have sub-mix for drums and samplers before they get routed to the main mix-console. In short, every track in Reaper is a 64m||32st sub-mixer under the hood. Wouldn't it be more simple to just have a simplified mixer GUI for the pin connectors outing? I mean, I can deal with the routing matrix (it has its pros), but most people find such matrix GUI a bit (quite) intimidating.

Hey Kenny, I LOVE your videos. I think your audience would really appreciate a video covering the LUA: FX Rack from eugen2777 The GUI is so simple and I think its streamlined visual approach to FX Routing would spark creativity for people who might feel a bit intimidated by the default Reaper Pin approach to routing. I added FX Rack to my Workflow and now it's something I can't live without.

Very useful tip for building complex and sophisticated effect chains! Thank you once more for demonstrating the abilities of Reaper. Can anyone enlighten me on whether something similar to plugin pin connector exists but for midi purposes? So each effect can listen to it's dedicated channel, letting us create multitimbral instruments in a single effect chain.

MIDI Channels?
@chrisspyratos7600
@chrisspyratos7600 2 жыл бұрын
@@REAPERMania Yes, but since many plugins don't offer a feature to select which midi channel they listen to, maybe reaper could take care of this by routing different midi channels to the appropriate plugins in a similar fashion.

I think I would have use each RS5k on a dedicated track on this case, and all midi on one track with sends to each of these. This allows quick solo, mute etc for each instruments and no matrix. Though this is essential trick to know it is indeed useful in some context to reduce number of tracks !
@REAPERMania

Great video as always Kenny! I have a question, when Clave is sending 3/4 to Delay and Reverb, is the signal flow from Clave 3/4 to Delay then Reverb going in serial one time, i.e. first Delay then Reverb? or is Clave 3/4 going in serial and parallel, meaning going to Delay then Reverb serially, AND parallel to Reverb without Delay, i.e. Reverb is applied twice with and without Delay?
@REAPERMania
@REAPERMania 2 жыл бұрын
It's all happening in order. So you have the Clave going into the Delay then that result going into the Reverb.

I suppose there must be a compelling reason someone would take the time to set up complex routing of channels within a track but to me the sensible way to do this is with multiple tracks. It's faster and offers more control.

In this specific case, having the clave, delay and reverb as the first three effects would have sufficed. But when the clap was separated as well this was needed.

Thanks, Kenny. Is it 'better' to use multiple channels on one track (as you do in this video), or better to assign separate tracks for each rhythm instrument, and have the appropriate FX on those tracks? I could understand the multi-channel approach for a 'cleaner' / 'tidier' visual environment, but is it also less processor intensive than having multiple tracks?
