Brilliant video. But one question, do you know if the 2008 Nissan Tiida has this type of brake, with the pads and the shoes on the rear wheels?

Great video Gerard. This is the first one I saw that mentioned filing off the stubs to enable the pads to fit. I thought I had been supplied the wrong pads and was about to contact shop!! Great tip. As we are in lockdown I have just replaced the rear pads on my 2009 qashqai - the first pads I have done in over thirty years!! Once I filed off the paint and burrs on each stub end they slid into the shims nicely. But... Do you mind answering a couple of quick questions? Would be much appreciated. 1. How easily should the pads be able to slide in the shims? 2. There are a couple of tabs broken off on my shims. Are these essential? Should I buy replacement set? 3. Is it essential to use grease where the stubs meet the shims? I had an issue removing the lower slide bolt on one side. The rubber got stuck inside but I managed to remove with a suitably bent screwdriver. I then managed to tidy up both the bolt and the inside of the hole in the caliper with a round file and emery paper. Slides beatifully now with silicon spray. Is there a single "one suits all" type of grease that can be used for the slider bolts and the shims and the edge of the caliper piston? Various other videos advise copper grease for the shims and back of pads, vaseline for the piston to stop dirt getting in and silicone grease for the slider bolts. Much appreciated. Charlie. Co Donegal.

Hello Charlie, firstly it is very difficult for me to reply to messages as I get so many and I work full time, hence the delay in reply. below is a quick summary to your questions. 1. How easily should the pads be able to slide in the shims? - fairly easy without being loose, you show never have to use a tool to force pads into place & can be removed again by hand. 2. There are a couple of tabs broken off on my shims. Are these essential? Should I buy replacement set? Not really as long as the shims are still in place and not hitting the disc. 3. Is it essential to use grease where the stubs meet the shims? This one brings a little debate, if the anti rattle shims are very clean or new the answer is no, but most will do it as anyway. I was told many years ago by a gentleman who worked with a brake company that if it has the anti rattle shims, greasing is not needed as they will move freely on them as long as the surface is clean. Regarding what products I use, I have since simplified my approach by using and all in one product that is extremely effective, been using it over a year now on brake every job. I have linked my latest video below which is a brake job on a BMW and I show and link the product there. Thanks for watching. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnzLe3yYmsuLqcU

@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage Massive thank you for such a comprehensive reply. Just heading to One Stop to get a tube of ceramic grease. Brakes have started a rubbing noise so will take them apart to check my work work and grease them up. Funny they started making a noise after about 2 weeks. They were fine initially. Again thank you.

Also no mention of cleaning the hub. This needs to be spotless - otherwise your discs will run out - which causes thickness variation over the next 500 to 2000 miles.

Please don't file the pads. The problem is corrosion of the cast iron carrier - this needs careful filing in a vice to remove rust - then refit abutment clips, but agree pads should not be tight and be slide smoothly.

No in most extreme cases I have come across it is 100% the new aftermarket brake pads that are at fault. A simple test you can do is check with the old brake pad if you have movement vs the new pad when all your cleaning up of surfaces is complete. I have come across this fault over 100 times when installing pads. Additional coating and incorrect replica of pad shape is to blame in these cases.
