You are very well educated when it comes to truck maintenance ! Impressive ! There is no telling what that would have cost at a truck shop !

The lube appeared rusty when you shot inside the hub showing the bearing. A company I worked for had two trucks lose a set of duals the day after a brake job because the new head mechanic thought he could save some money. Instead of spending $60 for 4 axle nut fixing plates, they got two big dollar tow bills, and lost a set of duals with axle shaft when the assembly couldn't be located. Clean all the threads on the wheel studs and nuts. I use grease on the lug nuts, some say install dry. I've never had an issue of lugs loosening after install. For brake parts, instead of anti-seize, use disc brake silicone lubricant. Anti-seize washes off with time, the silicone brake grease stays put.

Glad to have vids like this, give people like my self and other the how to un replace breaks, seals and many other things. But damn, the breaks and pads covered in muck. I seen the next part, much cleaner then this. Now I know what to see and smell when and if seal goes bad. Keep up the best work in the Truck shop.

Next time leave the hub on with outer bearing removed thread the bearing nut back on grab the hub and pull the inner bearing and seal will come out when you pull the hub cause the nut acts as a stop your welcome or use the axle put it under the bearing and pry them both out use axle as a lever

And if you don't like that method (which is excellent, btw) get a long piece of brass and drive the seat out with the inner bearing. Either works fine.

Steve check the vent on the housing.The lube looks like garbage imho. Your getting to much condensation in the housing from hot to cold cycles.

Steve, great videos, informative and entertaining. Brake Clean is the best thing since sliced bread for cleaning parts. The fumes from it are down right nasty. You don't want to be breathing that. If you're going to use it as your primary cleaning tool, open the shop door or clean outside. I like to use diesel fuel (not gasoline) and a parts cleaning brush to clean the heavy grease off, then use Brake Clean as a final rinse outside the garage or with the door open. The diesel fuel is way safer to use than gas and you will use way less Brake Clean (saving money). It might take a little longer to clean your parts, but at the end of the day, week or month, will it really matter? My decision to do it this way is safety and health. This is just a suggestion based on my personal experience, nothing more.

Hey Steve, great video. Just wanted to let you know (if you didn't already. ) Stemco makes a one piece nut, with an internal lock. We started using them several years back. You preload the one nut, then insert the locking tang inside. They really hold up well on our dump trucks and long haul tractors. Keep living the dream, brother!

I used to put a piece of greased up plywood under the wheels, pop the axle out, remove the axle nuts, then slide the whole assembly out to change the wheel seal, brakes, and/or bearings. It was a bit of a time saver for me.

Nice job big guy! You should use “gun wash” from the body shop. It’s used to clean paint guns out after using them. I use it from a 5 gal pale. I put it in a pump sprayer and it does a better job than a zillion cans of brake parts cleaner. It works the same, smells better and safer than those cans. It works just like brake parts cleaner and leaves absolutely no residue and dries just as fast if not faster. Plus you don’t have to kill your finger pushing that stupid button on the cans. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper too!!!

The seal goes bad when the bearing allows the axle to drop . Thus you are better off replacing the bearings and race, inner and outer, and the new seal. If there is a ring or grove cut in the axle then you should buy a sleeve repair kit that covers the grooved part where the seal cut the groove.. Their like $10 to $15 bucks vs a new axle !
@peep39
@peep39 2 жыл бұрын
Flatten yourself a cardboard box and put it under the axle. Then you have something to soak up the oil, the cleaner overspray, and it's easier on those old knees. Hardest part for me was watching you kneel directly on the floor. Get a foam kneeler
