How to remove the rear wheel on a chain drive motorcycle yourself. When you need to replace your rear tire most motorcycle shops do not want your bike, they only want your wheel. Shops will charge you more and make you wait longer if you bring in your bike.

Replacing the rear wheel on a motorcycle is not difficult. Follow these few steps and you will have no problems. What I show in this video can be applied to most motorcycles with a chain or belt drive.
To get started, get your rear wheel off the ground with either the centre stand or a jack. Loosen the chain tension guided on each side of the motorcycle. Take out the cotter pin on the axle retaining bolt. Loosen the axle retaining bolt. Put something under the rear tire to keep the wheel from falling to the floor once the axle is removed. Using a screwdriver pull the axle through. Now your wheel should be ready to pull out.
BRAKES!!!! DO NOT press the rear brake level when the wheel is out. With no brake disk in the brake caliper by pressing the level you will make the brake pistons over extend, then you have a BIG problem to deal with :( Tie the brake caliper up so it does not dangle on the hoses. Use a tie-wrap or a bungie for this.
SPACERS!! Your wheel will have spacers in the hub which are loose and easily lost. Mark which side each spacer came out of and keep them. The shop will lose them for you if you leave them in the wheel :(
Pull your wheel out and bring it to the shop.
When you are ready to reinstall the wheel reverse the procedure.
Rock on,
A

Thank you for this! I have to clean or remove a breake piston (rear brake) that won't retract and I noticed that the only way to do this is to remove the entire rear wheel, seeing as how the entire rear brake system is attached to the rear wheel axis. Thanks again.

Thank you. I have a 1994 Honda VLX and your tutorial, although not exactly my set up was very helpful. I'll be able to take the tire somewhere to inspect sprockets, wheel bearings, tire, inner tube, etc.

Exactly what I needed to see. Had to put a new chain and sprocket on for the first time and ended up with a washer left over. I had no idea where it came from.

That's a great help - thanks. I had a go yesterday on my HONDA XR 125 (2003) but I can't for my life get the axle bolt out!! I can just above move it and am able to shake the wheel a little, tried hitting the other end with a hammer but it's not moving.. Tons of WD-40/lubricants but no result... Any ideas? Much appreciated - thanks in advance...

Hi Andrew, great video, thanks for the help. I was wondering about the issue, when you push the break lever with the disbreaks off the disk. Bc exactly this happened to me with the front break. Im now wondering how i can fix the problem - any idea? Can i just lever them appart with a screwdriver or some sort of? thanks for your comment.

Hey Per, I would not hit it was a metal hammer as you may flange that end and never get it out. You can try a plastic hammer. Can you spin the axel? Does it have a hole in one end for a screwdriver? (see this video) You may have to let it soak in wd40 or other cutting oil for a while then work it. It will eventually let go. Be patient. The best cutting oil I have ever used is a product called Mouse Milk. See if you can lay your hands on some of that. Let me know how you do? A

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a 1979 Honda CB 900F. I would like to fit a wider tyre...about a 150 ideally if it fits inside the swingarm ! I have a 120 on at present. The rim is only a 2.15...will I need a wider rim to hold a 150 tyre If so could you recommend one that will have right diameter axle and will fit the disc brake calipers. Thanks very much ..Mike

Hi, I recently picked up a friends old Yamaha XS400. Setup looks similar to your Honda. I tried pulling the axle bolt and used a hammer to tap it out. Most of it came out, but I can't pull it the rest of the way out by hand. I'm afraid to continue hammering so I don't break anything. Suggestions?

I almost DID subscribe, but then I see how many of your videos are about MUSIC! Hell, at least you're not one of those obnoxious acoustic guitar people. The violin is waay more cool than that. But still - don't tell people to subscribe if they liked the video, when the video isn't at all indicative of your usual vids! And yanno, it might be helpful to do something more specific to your SUPERSPORT than generic basic bike stuff. The super-sports rock - I'm a DOHC Honda guy but I love SS even SOHC.
