Reason 13 - first impression

I am Hydlide of reason experts
Just being honest over here. I started to use reason 13 since yesterday. And at first I found the workflow related things pretty awesome to work with.
The sequencer split view is something to get used to, but it works all fine. I am also happy with the idea that the tool window is integrated with the sequencer these day.
I do have a few constructive critism points I like to make, therefor... this video.
Have lots of fun and I will talk to you later.

Mine makes a sound when I draw it in, it should be in the preferences. and the piano roll has lit up for ages, I hope that helps

I actually think this is the best upgrade in a long time. The small tweaks to the sequencer and edit window make working so much quicker. The new browser takes a bit to get used to but having worked on the Beta I got into a good workflow and now im actually liking it more. Mattias said they've received a lot of feedback on the device presets in the browser and they're working on a solution.

For me they did a good job with this upgrade. There are still some rough edges but overall it's a step in the right direction. Thank you for sharing your first impressions

since yesterday I had a bunch of discussions going back and forth related to some of these rough edges. And what I can say about this one, some of them are being addressed in the next coming updates / patches. I am not sure how these things are going to change though, because I have no insights on it. But the fact is they are working on it... and they will fix a few of these type of issues is a fact. That is all I know for now.

Having been a Reason user since Reason 5, always updating with perpetual licences, I have watched the reviews of R13 and I'm not going to bother with it. To hear Ryan and Mattias on the live stream launch, saying that the glitches would need to be worked on. I thought why have Reason Studios released an unfinished program?

why they released an unfinished program? Well... uhm... I don't know... At least all I know they had a bunch of testers to beta test their features. But with beta testers, there are flaws. Because well uhm.. beta testers are also human... they are no Hydlide... I can tell. I can remember I fished 4 bugs out of europa on release date. When it comes to the browser feature, there are issues. We report them. That's all I know at this point. But when it comes to the release date, I think that is due to planning a release and getting the marketing machine rolling... hence timing is an issue on that matter. So I understand from that point of view that it got released the way it did. Is everyone happy about it... no. I know... Since I read comments, and I read forums.

Native instruments Kontact or Arturia Analog Lab are Multi instrument plugins and have there own browser search and tag systems the same as the Reason Rack plugin does in other DAWs. You cant expect to save search patches from a 3rd party multi instrument plugins with Reasons Browser search thats not how it works.

reason for me bringing this part up... simply I am not sure how VSTs can export the list of tags. Since VST is like a protocol. And this can also be accessed lets say by a port. So if the protocol allows it to 'send' their tags (I am not sure if this an option, hence I am bringing it up in this video), they could make use of it. If it is not an option... well, then that is what it is... I can life with it though.

@@reasonexperts A multi VST only has one tag for that VST, you can load up that multi VST into Combinators then choose your preset and or instrument within that VST and save it. That way you could then categories those Combinators with tags. For example load Analog lab into a Combinator select Mini V and load "Boom Bass" preset then save that Combinator then tag it. You can keep saving a new Combinator everytime you find a nice preset.

I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to come up with a good reason why they removed the favorites lists, but I'm only coming up with bad ones. It's either greed, where this is some lame attempt to get people to use/buy REs more. Could also be an unintentional omission because they forgot about it/didn't care/general incompetence. Or is it an intentional omission because they are detached from their userbase enough that they never expected people were using their product in a different way than they probably are. None of this would be an issue if they just kept the feature as it is in R12. Hell people would try and deal with it even if they replaced it with a worse version. Instead, it is now not only completely gone, but if you're someone who doesn't have any use for REs and a tag system to look for patches, this new browser is a straight downgrade across the board and a workflow killer as far as I'm concerned.

i don't think greed is a proper term for it. Just saying, i think it is more a lack of vision. Hence i made the statement.

The windowed file requester is a show stopper for me. Or, not the inclusion of it, I couldn't care less about that, but the removal of the file lister... It was not compatible with my workflow before they removed the old one, it was in fact one of my bigger ui issues with Reason back then, and it's really not compatible with my workflow now that we've got versions with something that works for me (and works like all my other creative tools). Come to think of it, I don't like floating windows in general, it's a large part of why I hardly ever use VSTs also.

Have they removed the sound from moving notes in the sequencer in 13 then? Because in 12 the sound is there when moving midi notes.

by default the setting is turned off. I found it again. Someone made a comment about it, and that made me go... hmmm... So yeah, it is still in R13.

I really love the split screen on the arrange screen, it's very helpful. They definitely focused on RE than VSTs too.

the split view is pretty well done. And I love the idea on how the tool window (F8) is integrated with all of this. Just record your stuff, hit quantize in the sequencer and bwem... go to the next lane. It's pretty cool ;)

What I miss from the previous browser is that I have less of a sense where some of my files are physically stored on my pc. I usually went oh wait I have some wav files on disk D in folder such and such somewhere. Now I have to figure out how to add all those folders into the new browser. Having to relearn ingrained muscle memory workflow always needs some time to adjust. Oh well I will get there eventually.

Specifically I have a folder on my D drive with all kinds of stuff, refills, wav files etc. I added this folder to the favorites in the browser. But when I now click on that folder in the favorites nothing shows up in it? Is everything hidden behind tag filters maybe? I am confused to say the least.

One thing I have noticed, not included in this video though. It always seems to go to your reason library located on the C drive. The thing is, all my projects are located on the E drive. And I contstantly have to go to the proper folders manually. So I have added all my projects folders in the favorites list just go there quickly.
