Reason For The Whistle Sound Of A Falling Bomb🤔

Have you ever noticed the iconic sound of a bomb falling during World War 2 movies? You might think that spine-chilling noise is from the bomb slicing through the air, but that's actually not true. In fact, the sound we often hear in movies isn't quite accurate. Because from the ground's perspective, it's actually the opposite. This unique sound was caused by whistles attached to some bombs to weaken the enemy's morale and create panic on the ground.

My grandfather said when those bombs were released, the plane would lurch up about 6 feet before the pilot corrected.

Wow. I never thought of that. Nature never forgets to do stuff like that. Sometimes pilots and engineers do. I wonder if it surprised the first pilot to drop and f-ton of bombs.
@thesturmvogel6359
@thesturmvogel6359 4 ай бұрын
Im a pilot and the easy explanation for this is because to fly straight and level you need lift. Say you generate 1000kg of lift Lift is a direct result of airspeed So if you drop a heap of weight then suddenly you are generating more lift than you need for straight and level flight so you climb. But you climb in a very sharp and sudden manner. Modern day firefighting planes are the best example of this still happening

This is a common weapon used on bows as well, if I recall. They were meant to scream and inspire terror as the enemy would realize a volley was on its way. I had to look it up to be sure, but it also had the ability to startle horses as well depending on their training. A horse trained with the sound constantly would be unfazed but newer mounts with little training could certainly suffer from the surprise of it.

The UK copied it quite fast. My granny tells me that the one sound that she fears most is a whistle increasing in pitch. She was a survivor of the dresden firebombing. Those bombs seared themselves into here mind and you could tell because whenever she spoke about dresden her eyes would go wide and she'd stare off as her vocie starts to tremble. The only other time i heard her like that was talking about the famine post WW2 in germany when she whitnessed a farmer being lynched for hording food
