The School of Life

The pressure to be in a relationship, and the suggestion that anyone who isn’t in one is weird and pitiable, has very bad consequences for us all, forcing people into choices they shouldn’t necessarily have to make.

FURTHER READING
“Anyone who lives alone and manifests no longing to be in a relationship is - in our times - almost automatically (though more or less secretly) viewed as both pitiable and deeply troubled. It’s simply not thought possible to be at once alone and normal.
This sets us up for collective catastrophe, for it means that a huge number of people who have no innate wish to live with anyone else, and are at heart deeply ill-suited to doing so, are every year press-ganged and shamed into conjugal life, with disastrous results for all involved...”

+Anan Anwar +The School of Life Yea, but is this video explicitly for ppl who don't want and/or need a relationship? Ppl who are unable to find one could see this video as reassurance that finding one (and ostensibly keeping a health one) is a bit more complex than society wants to admit to. As stated in the video, there are societal pressures to be with someone which are indifferent to one's person and circumstances. If one wants a relationship, one should be patient with the search which, once again, is stated in the video. So, I really don't think the difference between the 3 is more than semantics. Whatever one's motivation for romance, you should understand single life is not a failure state and romance should be carefully considered rather than not at all.
@CalWillify
@CalWillify 8 жыл бұрын
+Anan Anwar I like how you worded that. Need and want get confused a lot. For me, I always ask myself if I will be a better person with or without (insert name here). It has nothing to do with my own happiness. I truly just want to be a better person...

Kobe SAN you never be confused about what love is. *Love is not an emotion/feeling, it's a CHOICE* . Staying together with someone you are *attracted* to is very different and someone you are both *attracted and connected* to. Big difference. As men, we have to be the leaders of the relationship and we have to be the one to make this happen. Women don't think logically, they wouldn't know any better. They are emotional not logical

Reasons to stay single: 1. Love is delusional. your partner stays with you because he or she needs what you bring to the table. Once gone, he or she will leave you. 2. Modern dating is far more complicated and it makes it impossible to find a date, 3. You have to compromise your freedom and time when dating. Better use that time and freedom for your future.

"Romantic love is a dangerous illusion" Pretty much what I have learned and come to terms with after all these years. Sentimentality is garbage and has clouded my mind and unlearning this has been a colossal yet fruitful effort. People come and go. Relationships flourish and die. Appreciate the time you have with people and move on if interests differ and not cling to them. Improving myself for myself is my ultimate goal regardless of whether I am with someone or not.

Single , no kids. Easy Answer. I see all the people in the comments pretending to be wise. Throw kids into the mix. Single parents are generally ill-suited to most effectively raise children without help. a relationship becomes more necessary for the Children’s benefit, rather than the preferences of the parents.

I’m in my late 40’s and never got married, never had kids, no girlfriend, I live alone and my life is awesome just like it was when I was a teenager. I have no worries, no problems, no stress, no debt, etc. I live my life like it’s la la land. I do not watch the news and I do not want to know because frankly to be honest I don’t give a flying fawk what happens in the world. Because that only leads to problems if I know and I choose not to know. Whatever happens, let it happen. Those who choose to live alone actually have a very powerful state of mind. They see through all the bullshit, suffering and agony in a relationship or marriage, and just decide to give a middle finger to all of that, regardless of what the society believe. Yes, going against the majority, one has to have balls to do that. Alone. I have seen many people, for the sake of their family and friends, and even colleagues, rushing toward marriage while not being psychogically and financially ready (some don't even have love in the equation). From that, shit goes downhill really quickly. Not only that they immediately face the reality that marriage is just too overwhelming with loads of stuff to worry about and not much of romance (or time for it) like before, they still proceed to have kids while not having enough money. Oh the chaos! It just keeps snowballing down. In my country there is an old, common belief that once one has settled down (started a family) he/she will think for the kids and family and will be hardworking. Oh how wrong people have been! As for those who haven't experienced love in their marriage (or for whatever reasons they couldn't marry the one they truly loved), they start cheating after their family has become stable. A lot of confessions on newspapers show that many middle-age men and women regret that they did not have love. Now as their kids have grown up, as they have "fulfilled" their responsibility to their family and had more time for themselves, they start to be attracted to an outside lover (usually a young colleague or business partner). Some even contact and have sex with ex true love, even when both have their own family. A word of advice: Enjoy your freedom as long as you can. Untill you cannot, you need to be ready for what comes next. It is not recommended to enter into a marriage if the both of you have low income. They say "Love conquers all". Well you can bet your sorry ass that they are bullshiting!

I just don't see what a relationship can bring me what I haven't given myself already. I love myself. I cherish myself. I work on myself. I'm there for myself. I'm not driven by sexual urges so I'm not worried about that aspect of life as well. I got more time and energy to focus on myself and I don't know if I wanna let this go. Edit #1 ( January of 2022) : I fell in love with this amazing woman and she changed my life and how I felt. Love finds you once you can live without it I guess. Edit #2 (September 2022) - we are going through some tough times together cuz she expects me to be a bit " romantic " and be more invested in her when I'm too distracted with my hobby which is writing (I'm a writer). I'm a chaotic person in nature. I'm constantly looking ways to connect things so I can make things out of stuff. Im always writing and focused on my job which is being a content writer. She wants to take things slow and enjoy the beauty of " love " with me. Unfortunately I do not get the importance of love to that extent but I love her dearly with every atom of my body. From feeling hopeless everyday, she made me feel lucky to be alive and I still do. We feel like we aren't compatible for each other and have decided to take different paths. She's the most purest person I've ever seen. She saw how much of a mess I was and she still decided to love me. I'm not giving up on her. We had this same convo during last January and we decided to find the middle ground together but after 8 months here we are, we failed to find any reasonable conclusion and what happened was I hurt her deeply during the process. I'm willing to fight to find the desire to love again but I don't want to do it in the expense of her happiness. She shouldn't be stuck with me sacrificing her own happiness and comfort while I find answers which aren't even guaranteed. This was my first and last chance at love and it didn't go as i thought it would. I am capable of loving but I can never see it becoming a primary thing in my life. I feel like when you are a in a relationship, being fully invested in your partner is the least thing u can do. Since I'm struggling to do that, i guess relationships ain't for me. I love you Francisca and I always will even though I couldn't show it properly at times ❤ Edit #3 ( June of 2023) - so it's been months since me and Francisca broke up but I still miss her. The good thing is I managed to turn my passion into a profession so I'm busy with it most of the times.

Just because people are single doesn't mean they are alone or unhappy. In fact, single people are free to explore many types of relationships and partners over a period of time with alot of freedom. I believe that is the main reason many people are intentionally single. Moreover, singles can re-charge alone for periods of time if they wish. I know many single people who are extremely fit, both physically, mentally and spiritually who prefer being coupled at times while not at others. Most of these people have very high standards, are confident in themselves and refuse to settle.

This is why you should not actively seek a relationship. A good relationship is formed when two people love themselves and slowely grow toward each other (and are capable of self-improvement). You don't find love, love finds you

My last girlfriend of three years thought she loved me; but she loved the person she thought I was. I the earliest months of the relationship I was singing and playing the guitar at campfires and coffee shops, but that's not the 'meat and potatoes' everyday 'me'. It was only after we got really comfortable after a few months that she started murmuring things when we'd converse. She'd walk away saying, "You're so weird..." - at things that were my normal thoughts in the eyes of my friends. It's so true that your truest self will not likely be loved, and I have years worth of rejection and being misunderstood to show for it. Because a good voice, and skill on an instrument, are not cause enough to really enter a relationship with someone. Now I have to move on, and rebuild my self esteem, after having someone spend great effort to convince me that I'm a reject.

I had a coworker who told me about his sexless marriage after his wife gave birth to their son. She gave the kid more time and affection and denied the hubby for 5 years. He was losing patience and heart. It took an extramarital affair to wake her up (it helped that she was a housewife who would face hardship if divorced from her money making hubby). However, I don’t know how well the marriage is today because I left that department 12 years ago. I can’t forget how desperate he sounded when he told me about being married but feeling alone.

I always thought that "Love" in the eyes of most (although not all) Neurotypicals (as I have Asperger's) is a necessary function, if you don't have that connection or get into a relationship, then you are automatically a subhuman. I also thought that Love in terms of any "normal" person is really just Theatre. it's all an act. Although it may not be fully intentional, it's all just manipulating someone simply because you want them to fit into the Puppet on your stage to make sense of your world. That's why Marriage (as lovely as it is) seems odd as I don't see why you NEED a metal whole on your finger to prove you love someone. When you see something in someone that is admirable, you respect, understand and accept them (even if it means not being with them) and they feel the same way, that's the real marriage. I've noticed especially with Marriage, signing things, rings, a performance in front of friends and family is just a show. To me it all seems fake. It seems people don't actually have the capacity to genuinely care (call it a Freudian excuse as from very early traumatic childhood experiences, situations all the way up to now) about others. When I look into the eyes of an everyday person (being Autistic, I am told I lack Empathy which is untrue) I see nothing. The only real thing I see is "how does this all play into my world" as they are too solid and grounded to reality (which is why they are terrified of being alone, engage in Drinking Culture and see anyone who doesn't as either stupid, pathetic, queer or somehow Hitler) and need performances to entertain them and for them to do the same in hopes of recognition. That's why Sarcasm Sassyness Weddings Anniversaries Prom Social Media Drinking Culture Partying Trends Make Up Excessive Clothes Shopping Dressing up food Throwing Away food because you didn't dress it correctly Selfies Exist as weird as that sounds. Again, not all people are like this, but most of it seems very superficial and again, there is nothing there but impulse and acting (though they genuinely believe what they feel is real) I can't describe it without sounding weird... or like a complete dickhead

For those of us who genuinely enjoy being alone, the best thing is to not waste the time of people who simply want to be in a relationship for relationship’s sake. Have the courage of your convictions and communicate with anyone you’re involved with, from the start, so they know where you stand. That way, maybe you have a chance at intimacy and connection with another person without treading into danger zones where someone gets hurt or (worse) you both fall into a relationship that you didn’t want in the first place. We are social animals; we need touch and human warmth. But we don’t need the drama of unfulfilled or misguided expectations.

What turns me off marriage is adopting a new set of parents, family and problems when mine are quite handful as it is.

I have been single for almost two years. Honestly, I never plan to go back to dating because it never did anything positive for me. Being alone is the best option for me.

There is nothing wrong with people wanting to be alone. It means they are happy with them selves.

@@Pl4yB0yShaw7y Well start feeling good to be by your self and that will radiate to confidence and people will want to be around you. I go by my self all the time and family & friends admire that!
