For what it is worth, my story is that I was always intrigued by kilts, but didn't feel "right" wearing them until I got engaged to my now wife, who is a proud Baird. She is an only child of a single mother, and both are very proud of their heritage, and I found that pride quite infectious and wanted to show both my dedication and support, so quite quickly picked up a Baird Ancient tartan kilt. I got married in a tux, but with a Baird tartan tie passed down from her grandfather. She hyphenated her last name, which I was completely in support of, and if we have a son, we are going to give him the Baird name.

After watching Outlander and at the same time discovering my Scottish heritage I decided to wear kilt every Friday at work. I teach English and I became the topic of conversation for weeks... I love wearing my kilt especially when going shopping and my wife proudly holds my hand as we walk the streets or visit the supermarket or mall. I’m so proud of my kilt so I just don’t care about what people think-most people are positively impressed and ask a lot of questions. I let people stare - I know I look good and feel awesome 😁

It took me to dang near die to really start living, as mortals we take tomorrow for granted. Stop dont put off today for tomorrow. I always wanted a kilt I got a cheaper kilt at first, and from there I have moved up. Looking at replacing my church suit, with a kilt and jacket (sorry haven't got the names down for all the parts of a true Scottish set up). Took me 42 years dont wait to do things as I did.

I wear my utility kilt to work in, play in. For me, it's a comfort/cooling effect. I also feel connected with nature. Our man parts were not intended to be bundled up all the time, if ever. There's nothing better than working outside on a hot day, and a nice cool breeze runs up ur kilt. Niiiiiice!

I shaved my head loooong before it was "cool." Funny looks, and even the occasional "skin head" accusation. I never stopped. It's part of me, who I am. Long story short, if you want to break social norms, you just have to OWN IT! There will always be the "adults" whose brain never matured past 5th grade. Who cares about their opinions, or anyone's really. It's your life to live. You only get the one, live it as you wish, and live it fully.

I started shaving my head when I was in the Marine Corps. (Cheaper than paying for a haircut every week). So I've heard the "skinhead" comments. Started wearing a kilt occasionally around 15 years ago. Wear them quite a bit more often as my collection expands (8 and counting) evenings and weekends mostly. Dress code at work doesn't allow them.

The first time I went out in a kilt, was my first time wearing one, and I didn't feel any awkwardness (surprisingly seeing as I'm 16) I just went out, went to the store, went around town with some friends, and I only got positive comments on it, it feels a lot more natural and a lot more "me" to wear a kilt rather than be in pants.

I had a custom Cape Breton tartan kilt made to replace my army mess kit when I retired from the military. My aim was to simply replace my mess kit, with the added bonus of pissing of my pants-wearing former colleagues; however, it's turned into a slippery slope. I probably have some old-guy lower GAF-factor too that is helping me evolve into a serial kilter. I have a second custom being made with Absolute Darkness, a tribute to miners (I'm in a mining town), and with that one I'll have 7 kilts: five that are good-to-go for work. I'm thinking before the snow flies for sure. Thanks gentlemen for your great discussions.

I am Australian. An Australian of Scottish decent. My Grandfather and Father were both born in Scotland before emigrating to Australia when my Father was 13. Being brought up in Australia we are taught from a young age about the Aboriginal affiliation with the land. A spiritual connection with the land. Throughout my younger life it was always a bit if a hohummm level of interest. That was until I was standing in the Scottish highlands, looking out over the landscape... I am now not ashamed to admit; I wept... I cried like I have never cried before in my life. Suddenly I completely understood the Australian Aboriginal's connection to the land. The spiritual feeling of belonging was overwhelming..!

Scottish American Military Society wear kilts. My first experience wearing a kilt was at my father's wedding two years ago and I found it quite psychologically challenging at first being in my 50s and with two years to retire from the military (I'm sort of a late bloomer ) Not sure if pictures of the wedding would circulate thru my unit and the backlash I would receive from it. Will during the wedding I was not alone just about every male attending wore a kilt and many different clans were in attendance. My Father is a member of the Freemason Scottish rite and I had plenty of support. I was surprised that many soldiers in my unit wear kilts. That same year several soldiers suggested going to the Highland games in Las Vegas, I noticed a few of them attending the festive and wearing kilts. I later joined the Scottish American Military Society.

I asked my husband one day if he would ever wear a kilt, he said NO! I was a little surprised by this because he is a musician. Then a few weeks later I took my husband to the Middle Tennessee Highland Games and he saw all the men in kilts and said "wow, they look cool!". We had our 6 year old grandson with us (who had been playing with the other boys who were wearing kilts) and I asked my grandson if he would like to have a kilt and he said YES! We went to the vendors who were selling them and my husband got interested and actually bought a utility kilt. When he put it on, he said "this is so comfortable, I don't want to wear pants anymore! He is flying to CA next week for a gig and he wants to wear his utility kilt on the plane. I love it! Thanks for the advice!

So i actually wear mine every Friday at work regardless of weather. Side note: some co-workers and customers keep asking me where my kilt is when I'm not wearing it (of course i just say it's in the closet) but planning on getting more!!

I am getting started with kilts. I have no heritage from Scottish or Irish. I'm your typical heinz 57 human. However, I do know a bit about the evolution of trousers. (pants). A lot of it came from horse riding. I don't ride horses. And you look through history and some of the greatest cultures in the world didn't wear "pants". Greeks wore togas and kilt like clothing for men and soldiers. Roman soldiers did the same. There are examples all over history of different forms of lower body coverage. Pants just became common a few hundred years ago. I just figured, "What the hell, if it was good enough thing to wear for centuries before pants for all these other cultures, why not now?" So kilts it is.

I have technically no Scottish heritage, but spent part of my childhood there, so I guess I am a bit Scottish and I love that part of me. Try to do it the best I can with pride. Thanks so much guys for your videos, pointers and most of all for promoting one of the most masculine pieces of attire on the planet. My mother instilled a love of our scottish heritage in me at a young age and 20 years ago, while i was attending college, married and with 3 children, I walked by a Scottish booth at a music festival and ordered my first custom made kilt. I had no idea how much they cost but hey, a 16oz and 8yards...is there any other? I was measured and asked for a down payment. Being in school with a family I had no money so I was floored when the downpayment requested was what i had estimated the probable cost to be !!! My wife supported my decision and we somehow made it happen ❤. Actually she wanted me in a kilt more than I wanted it. I wore it for typical formal occasions like weddings and grads (even mine) and I realized it wasnt getting it out enough . The most expensive garment I owned at the time and it hangs in my closet an a average 364.5 days a year. Not any more. I now wear kilts (all 14 of them) more than pants for EVERY occasion. As do my 3 sons (some more than others) and several friends! I even have a 'beater' kilt for working in the yard.

In Commonwealth countries there are still regiments that are of the Highland or Scottish tradition. Often, but not always, they have a connection with a regiment in the United Kingdom. In Canada, these are all reserve units (National Guard equivalent for the US, Territorial rough equivalent in the UK). When I served (since Canada is a multi cultural nation) there were members from every part of the world who wore the kilt with honour and pride. In my GMT (basic training) my mates included: Chinese, French Canadian, German, Italian, El Salvadorian, and Vietnamese. After training and being accepted into the regiment, all of them took to the customs and habits of Highlanders. (I had a jump start on some of the traditions having been in a civilian pipe band before.) On a separate note, most people in and around pipe bands usually omit saying the “bag” part... ie. piper, pipe band, drummer, pipe band drummer (when clarifying) or pipes & drums. When confusion might occur, qualifying with “Highland” helps. But when you are wearing a kilt and sporran, if “piper” isn’t clear in context, “bag” isn’t going to help:)

Fond this channel the day before I'm ordering a Utili-kilt. My first kilt I got was for a Larp and I liked it so much I'd wear it to the beach. I want to get my clan tartan after that but back then kilts were harder to get with out paying a arm and a leg. Then I started seeing the utila-kilts when working Cons. After too many years I finally got the scratch to get one. I'm thinking of getting a Hybrid/traditional latter. The only that sucks is it's almost impossible to to find A Dundee tartan or even fabric pattern fabric that doesn't coast a arm and a leg. There are also some versions of the tartan that I find ugly as funk I didn't find one I like and will probably get a great kilt out of it still not cheap but it's wool. I've yet to see it in cotton.

I always thought they were cool, but didn't want to wear one because I couldn't trace the heritage. Did the DNA, researched the family and the rest is family history. Working towards Serial Kilter status!!! Not to mention your show is a good way bring folks in!

My persona changes when I wear a Kilt. I'm profoundly proud of my humble Scottish roots, and have ancestors from the lowlands, and the Hebrides. All working folk, and continued when they moved to Canada, then Michigan, right to this day. There is no other ethnic nationality that is so recognizable as a Kilt.

All the way from Brazil, I'd like to say that I've recently come across your channel, and I can't stop watching your content. I've been learning so much about the culture. I am a kilt wearer... fully aware that I'm a complete rookie and have got so much to learn. I occasionally put on my kilt of sorts. I really need a proper one, though. But in Brazil it's almost impossible to find anyone who could provide me with good-quality-properly-designed kilts without me having to break the bank. However, whenever I go out in my kilt, I get looks ranging from “WTF is that?!” to “Will you f*ing marry me?” hahaahah… Most of them lean towards a positive reaction. I absolutely love it! I want to further my knowledge on Kilt wearing and everything surrounding it and this channel is going to by my main source for sure. Great content. Ceud Taing! :D

Hello fellas. I stumbled for some reason upon this video, and watched it through. Here’s my two cents for you. I feel proud of my heritage when I see a man in a kilt. Knowing we were banned from wearing them for over a hundred years and that my family name was also outlawed for the same amount of time, it has very special meaning to me to see a person wear it proudly, you bloody rebel, ultimately it’s the most manly thing a man can wear, because it’s a giant F U to any form of oppression. If you wear a kilt you are living proof they didn’t really win, they may have taken our ancestral lands and our way of life, but they shall never take our Freedom. In my home town, 90% English Catholic immigrants that go back to the landing of the Ark and the Dove in 1633, I got a lot of flak for having a Germanic last name. There is an Amish population and I love and respect those people, but they keep to themselves so making friends to hang out with was a non-starter there. I just never felt like I fit in and all of the locals made sure I didn't ever forget it. Not sure if it was some leftover resentment from WWII or what, but whatever it was, it stuck.... Constant fights all the way through school, etc etc. ad nauseam. If I had thought about it, or known about it, I would have started wearing kilts in middle school just for the unrestricted movement. But hindsight is always 20/20, right? I went to a few Scottish events with my cousins who all live in New York. I thought about wearing a kilt after seeing a lot on the other patrons. My cousins laughed me into a shame when I mentioned it. "You're not Scottish. You're German!" So I let it drop. ....My mother and cousins were really big into genealogy and eventually I found out that my great grandmother was a MacLean! Well, well, well,... If my Austrian name burned the locals noodles here in Maryland, just wait till they get a load of THIS! I think I started to wear kilts JUST to piss them off even more than they already were. Mean people suck! I never started a fight in my life, but I sure ended a lot of them. So sticking a thumb in their eye by wearing a kilt just made me smile that little bit more. Now I own a B&B called MacLean House. We brew our own beer, I hunt white-tail on the property and serve wild game. I have a big fire pit that everyone hangs out around at night on the weekends. It is a huge hit! I broke out my kilts from day one, and now I have a following. It's nothing to see several of my regulars sporting kilts of all colors and styles. Funny though, I never see the MacDonald or Cambell tartans..... I wonder why that is? ;)

A bunch of my buddies are Hashers or Hash runners( They are kinda a cross between a trail runners and pub crawl or"drinkers with a running problem") and a whole bunch of them wear them. That is how I found out about the utility kilts and why I started looking seriously. Then I lost my Job and was tired of being depressed and closed off. So my friend took me to the local Irish culture fair. I always wanted a Tartan kilt(Family name is from Ulster) so I just said Screw it I am getting one! I bought one of those $100 packages. I also grew my hair super long and grew a beard as a rebellion. (I always had to have it short and clean shaved at work). But then I realized how pasty white my legs were/are. I am also pretty introverted but when I put my kilt one it's kinda like flipping a switch and I have more confidence. My new St.Patrick's day traditions is going to yoga in it, they always make us do headstands for some reason? But I really need to wear it more often the rest of the year.

I know this is an old video and any new comments will likely go unnoticed; but..... At 64 I am very new to finally getting up the courage to pursue the kilted life. A recent Celtic Calling Festival was my first public experience while being kilted and I found it very enjoyable. I know I felt myself stand a little straighter and a little taller and I was comfortable. This past weekend my wife and I had a day of shopping planned. I walked through the mall while kilted and could see and feel a lot of stares, but there were also many smiles and head nods too. One old gentleman actually came running up to me all excited. He was clad in all green (it was St. Patrick's Day) and said he loved my kilt. He said he was Chinese (which it was obvious) and wasn't Irish and couldn't wear one. I told him he actually was allowed if he wanted and that was all he needed, the desire. He asked where he could get one and I recommended a few online resources (in West Virginia I don't know of any kilt makers). Another woman saw me and said, "yes, yes, yes, love it!" Then she grabbed her husband and said, "That!" You need to." Not sure how he felt but who knows, maybe my having the courage and comfort to be in public while kilted was enough for this fella, and maybe others, to give it a try themselves.

Our tartan is red, dark and lighter green. It looks a lot like Christmas colours. Also, since my husband's father was adopted, since his father died in WWII, and mother remarried. His siblings are true Scottish descent though. I'm not sure we should be using the family tartan, andvall that has to fo with their clan. Is that an issue if we use it? After all Rob Roy raised his wife's son as his own... I'm sure he wore his clan's tartan. ...or, should I keep the exact pattern, and maybe change the red to a yellow instead of the red? ...and how about the clan motto? I myself although not connected to Scotland at all, since i was a child i have been fascinated by the Celtic culture, and the music. That's why I'm spending hours binging on your shows. We are building a huge house, and I would like to add some of the culture and heritage into the house. So using the tartan inb the study/ library would be ideal!!! Thank you!!! 👍👍

I'm a Clan Rose descendant who is still pondering which of the two Rose tartans I want to invest in (So I haven't taken that leap into kilt wearing, but primarily for not yet having a kilt). I like the hunting tartan but the Rose (more red) is a bit bolder and distinct. For me it is about connecting with my heritage, and growing up in NC there are lots of strong connections with Scotland, so I've been to many Highland Games events, and wanting a kilt for years.

My start in the wonderful world of Kilts started with the Boy Scouts. There were a couple of McLarens in the history of the Scouting. One was involved in the begging of a program called Wood Badge and the other was at the very first experimental camp done by the founder Baden-Powell. I played the part of his adjutant to BP. His name was Major Kenneth McLaren who actually served with PB in the military. I made it a point to spread the word about BSA history by ordering a McLaren Kilt and started wearing it at various functions. The plan worked as folks would ask me what it was and why etc. My second kilt was a muted Red, White and Blue that had been selected by the pipe band I played with. It was to celebrate the USA Bicentennial in 1976. My third was a new kilt selected by the band to honour our Pipe Major. My son's wedding was done in kilts along with several attendees and the same with my daughters wedding. In fact I'm going to a wedding in a couple of weeks in my finest Prince Charlie kit.Yes I like kilts.

I started by wearing an inexpensive one after bike rides. We’d hang around by the cars and chew the fat but the bike shorts would get uncomfortable. I found a Hawaiian print sport kilt and started putting that on so I could skinny out of the bike shorts without scaring or scarring the general public. Eventually a few other of the guys were doing the same. Now that I’ve found out my Ewing and MacLachlan clan heritage, I’m looking at buying some clan tartans to add to the utilikilt collection. BTW - I can carry 10 beers in my utilikilt. Brilliant

I started out in traditional at age 59 when I discovered my Scottish heritage with Clan MacLean. I have worn my kilt out in public in the "only guy in a kilt" scenario with no problem. I could do utility kilts if I wanted to, I just haven't found a good reason to do it. Obviously it wouldn't be for the same reasons as with traditional, and I haven't found a good or compelling reason to do it, but I do know that I could because I have done so already with my traditional Clan kilt. To the guys who are just starting out, Just own it! Like Rocky Said "It's an emotional roadblock an inch high and the apprehension is all in your head. As Arnold would say; "Vat are you vaiting for, just do it, do it now, dere is nothing to it." You will kick yourself afterwards for making such a fuss. Sorry Rocky, Sky diving is just suicide without the commitment. (Or is that bungee jumping? Hmm.) Besides I'm to the age now where I don't put my ass above my head. Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane anyway? ;-)

Family/Heritage and Highland Games combined to get me into a Kilt. I had been reflecting on Family History and then heard of a Highland Games in my area. Bought a Casual Kilt (and 2 more for practice) for the Games and jumped in head first! Now I'm neck deep!?! Less than a year later, I own 3 casuals, one 8-yard, and a 5-yarder & 8-yarder on the way!?! For the "wearing of the kilt," you mentioned "special occasions;" I often get, "Oh, nice kilt! What's the occasion?" I love responding, "It's Friday." They are fun!

Hello, As far as I'm concerned, I've just adopted the kilt very recently and belatedly ... at the age of 66. I live in Belgium and have been retired since the beginning of the year, so I have a lot of leisure time. I've joined a group of friends who regularly attend rock jam sessions. In this group, there's one friend who always comes in a kilt. I thought the look was really cool and it made me want to give it a try. Strangely enough, the band mates and my daughter encouraged me to wear the kilt, telling me that with my stature (190cm/120kg), it would look great on me. So I decided to find out more and went to the only kilt store in Belgium. I tried on a kilt with the "Black Watch" tartan, the belt, a sporran and decided to buy it. I had my pants packed and left the store, not without a certain pride. In the evening, I went out with my mates and I must say that the ladies were quite enthusiastic and had very positive comments. With the pleasure I got from wearing my kilt and the very positive reactions from my friends and daughter, I thought I'd wear it more often. Anyway, I've had it for 10 days and have already worn it 5 times! Fun fact: when I leave the house, I walk straighter with pride.

I had been doing a lot of research on equipment from the past for hiking and bushcraft survival stuff. I found the great kilt and wouldn't stop talking about its usefulness. Finally my parents got me a great kilt and I tried it on. I had put it on horribly the first time but I absolutely loved it. My parents wouldn't let me wear it though out in public because they didn't want people to judge me. One day soon though.
