Thanks dude! totally worked. I used a 10 ft 2x4 as a lever and a rope w/over 1500lb of upward pressure...nothing. 5 minutes with a vise grip and it was out. Thanks again.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard 3 rods 1/2 inch. Gonna try reinserting them using a digger bar to make larger holes. First attempt went in only 1 foot but the digger br makes fast progress. About 8 inches topsoil over broken limestone. The limestone goes to China by my estimate.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard I put a swingset in for my kids about 10 years ago. Landscape timbers with 2 ft pieces of rebar every few feet. The kids are older and the landscape timbers have mostly been chewed up by termites... but the rebar remained. That is, until I found your clamp and spin method. Much better than the yank it all around and hurt your back method I had been using. Thanks for the great tip!

This is just one way we use them, we love our vice grips, I think I have about 5 different sizes!

This method IS soil type dependent. Heavy clay soil this will also work if the spike isn’t thru a railroad tie or timber, but if anchored thru a timber…, not so much.

It seems like a foot of soil can start doing some crazy things with pressure. I want to make a Matlab script to model this, but when pulling up I think the rebar can make a pretty powerful pocket of vacuum under ground as it moves up. That's why I always hammer in 3 more rebar around it if I can't get the first one out. Option for infinite loop if you hammer in those 3 deeper than the first.

If the ground is moist enough then yes the rebar can create a small vacuum. The turning really helps break the seal to create less surface area between the bar and earth.

keep those vice grips down low and grab that pry bar with the two by four at the base of the rebar and pry it out of the ground.

Unfortunately this did not work for me. I even dug about 18” deep around the rebar and it won’t budge. No clue what the people who owns the house before me had on this spot but I suspect it’s anchored in adamantium
