As for the people complaining about why there’s a need for a new remake...have you seen the random shit that’s on Netflix recently?? I didn’t have a problem with the accent of the actor playing de Winter. I can tell it’s not his original accent but it’s not distracting at all. I really enjoyed this movie for what it is, but it is a very very heavily altered, romanticized version of the original novel. Essentially, it is told as if the narrators perspective in the book is an accurate representation of reality, which it is not. I wish theyd used the opportunity to examine how Max is a narcissist , a chauvinist and a sociopath who is abusive and unromantic. I feel that while a couple of adaptations, namely the one with Charles Dance, came close to doing so, they still fell into the romantic tragedy trap, showing way too much actual chemistry between the new Mrs and Max. In this movie Max is very likeable, not brooding enough and the audience feels sympathy for him as someone who made a grave mistake because he was provoked. A flawed hero but a hero nonetheless. The original Max is a completely different character. Nevertheless I enjoyed this movie for the visuals and romance.

@snowmonster429 ай бұрын
I completely disagree with you about Max. In fact, I want to say that you have gotten it completely wrong, but I guess there is room for different interpretations. What you don't seem to understand is that Rebecca was the psychopath and Max was one of her victims. A "narcissist" isn't just someone you dislike, it's a specific type of personality. More importantly, narcissism (even if it applied to this character) isn't just an evil decision that some people make about who they are going to be. At it's root, it is a coping strategy that people begin to develop practically during infancy as a way to deal with the craziness of the people who are raising them. Max was a very complex character and he definitely wasn't perfect, but he definitely wasn't the bad guy in this story and he wasn't evil. He was quite tormented and, like most of us, he didn't always handle it well. I assume that you've read the book. I don't think that I understood it the first time I read it either. I eventually had some terrible bosses and witnessed some really awful friendships, which helped me understand very clearly what someone like Rebecca is all about. She eats nice people alive.

I am a huge fan of both the Laurence Olivier and Jeremy Brett versions of Maxim de Winter. But that doesn't mean Armie Hammer did a bad job. He overall fitted the role well. My only quibble with this version is the overdone second half and the unnecessary ending. And Lily James us too glamorous to be the second Mrs De Winter. In that the 1979 version did best with Gina David who suited the character to the hilt.

Disappointing... The begining was ridiculous, with the staff not letting her into the terrace 🙄 Maxim was not charming here at all, the way he raised his hand was kinda dorky. In the book, the lady she works for is sick, so she goes to have breakfast alone, which is nice, no one pays her any particular attention. She is so clumsy she knocks over a glass and makes a mess. Maxim notices it, in a gallant chill way he helps her and invites her to his table. They have their first meaningful conversation. Why does Hollywood always wants to exaggerate the treatment of women in decades prior?

I don't like how the hotel staff is portrayed - that they won't let her sit at the balcony, because she is "not a guest" - in the book they were treating her like a normal guest. I wonder, why they made the choice to make the waiter rude as hell.
@mrb.56103 жыл бұрын
In the book she knocks over a vase of flowers .... why change it ?!?
@snowmonster429 ай бұрын
I don't get it either. The only explanation I can think of is that they didn't bother understanding what a "paid companion" is, which seems ludicrous because why would anyone decide to make a movie about a story they don't understand? In the book they treated her as a guest because that's what she was. It could be argued that she wasn't a normal guest, but she was definitely a guest, not paid staff. A Companion is not a maid. You're definitely a drudge paid to fetch and carry and be bullied by your employer, but a companion is an impoverished person who is of essentially the same social class as her employer. If Mrs. Van Hopper had found out that her companion got publicly kicked out of the dining room she would have been mad because that would have diminished her consequence as well. But it's irrelevant because it would never have happened. Everything about this scene tells me that I am not going to watch this movie. It's a shame because I would love to see this story done in vivid color, but you can't just take a story from a different era and tart it up so that it looks more modern. That's just not how it works.

I’m literally forcing myself to get past the first 30 mins in hopes that it will improve. They changed so much that the nature of Mr. and Mrs. De Winters’ relationship has been completely lost. Their growth as a couple throughout the story doesn’t seem like it will hold any weight cause they’ve already been loved up and on top of each other within the first 10 mins. Like PLEASE lord, I so want it to get better. 😭😭😭 edit: It didn’t get better. To those who enjoyed it, that’s great and I’m happy you did. Especially for those who haven’t read the book or didn’t like the book you’ll probably love it. I never expect a movie to follow the book perfectly but in my opinion it was all a train wreck of bad writing and not-awful actors doing the best they could with substandard material.

Had no idea the actor Armie Hammer was from the USA or that he was / is embroiled in a rather odd salacious Hollywood style divorce - that's been splashed all over the net.
