Born Batsogile Lovederia Malope in Nelspruit in 1965, before finding fame and acclaim in the gospel music scene, Rebecca Malope was already an 80s disco and pop music star. She came to Jo'burg searching for stardom. She entered the Shell Road To Fame Talent contest in 1986, but did not win. Undeterred, she entered for the second time, under the guidance of Sizwe Zako in 1987 and won in the Best Female Vocalist category. After the big win, Sizwe Zako and Peter Tladi put money together to record Woza Lovey.
