It's comforting to me to watch these to know that even someone on a small budget can celebrate the holidays with a full meal. You always come up with very diverse recipes so a family can have variety even for a small amount of money.

It’s fun and affordable to be able to eat a home cooked meal on the cheap! I definitely need that to fit in my small budget years ago! I once chose to be alone one year for Thanksgiving or Easter, I had been overwhelmed with family dinners and get together that year, my family understood, so I got all my fixings for a turkey dinner, stuffing, potatoes and pumpkin pie, ate on my comfy sofa, watched a Netflix show, went back for seconds and never regretted it, but just one year, I need to not make that a habit! 😂

I would be interested to see what kind of desserts you could make for a tea party or birthday party using DT items...and maybe one or two just on a bunch of side dishes...I know those aren't rounded meals but sometimes with things get-togethers like potlucks or something, we get assigned one type of item to bring like a dessert or like a side dish.

Not only is this a great way to do a holiday meal on a budget, but it also brings us back to a simpler time when holidays were more about the company and less about a stressed out host/hostess trying to go over the top to impress. Your menu of good tasty food, some sparklers, and a couple of lawn games (or board games), would all make for a great holiday memory. Thank you.

Just a suggestion on the Esquite if your local Dollar Tree carries it: We use white corn and squeeze lemon on your corn before the mayo. Butter goes on after the mayo and before the queso cotija.The other ingredient is Tapatio or Valentina you put on before the Tajín. My DT carries all the items but idk if all do. You were pretty close to authentic for what you had but just wanted to mention the actual ingredients we use that copycat the "eloteros" (street vendors) 😊. Just a friendly FYI ~ Esquite is boiled corn served loose in a cup. Elote are also boiled served on a stick. Street corn is grilled 😊.
@Meari.S

I was just at my local DT and unfortunately it doesn't have Tapatio, Valentina, or Queso Cotija. Also, she was doing a $20 meal so those extras would put her over $20.
@chas1981

She is making it similiar with the ingredients available and affordable. It is not meant to be exact. The way you make yours, I make mine. However, if I was on an extreme budget it wouldn’t be pratical.
@Mami_Loca
@Mami_Loca Жыл бұрын
....I suppose certain items are available or plentiful depending on the ethnicity of the demographic area. I live in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood and our DT carries Tapatio and Cholula. And there's a variety of canned corn products I've run into that issue a few times in wanting to try a recipe that looked easy and tasty. My local DT didn't have either the main ingredient (usually a freezer item) or a canned good that was necessary to complete the dish. And regarding the $20 budget....in my case because I know my family...I would've forgone the baked beans because no one likes them allowing that money to go towards hot sauce. And I assumed the majority of viewers have butter or margarine and mayo so that mayo money can buy lemon juice. It wasn't a comment pointing out that she was wrong in her way of recreating esquites, it was posted just to let others know how they can make it at home and share a couple ingredients they might not have known were used to make authentic esquite.😊
@Mami_Loca
@Mami_Loca Жыл бұрын
My comment wasn't intended as an affront to her idea or ingredients used. It was merely a suggestion on how we make elotes for an authentic taste. Because people can sometimes misread or take a comment differently than was intended, I was careful with my words and started with "Just a suggestion...". Because that's all it was. It wasn't me saying she was going about it the wrong way or that my way is the only way it should be done exactly. I also understand every DT carries different items so I wrote "if your local DT carries it..." because what's available in abundance at my closest DT may not even be an item they ever carry at the DT on the other side of town. Like I mentioned to the commenter before you...I live in a town that is predominantly Mexican and my town's DT has a lot Hispanic foods in their inventory but the one just outside of town does not. I also wrote that if we're staying under $20, I would not have purchased the baked beans (we don't eat them) and used that $ to purchase the hot sauce. I assumed that the majority of viewers most likely have butter/margarine and mayo. So the $ for mayo could instead buy lemon juice. My aim was not to takeaway from her dish on a budget. It was just to share the items one can use, in case they weren't aware, for the real and authentic elote taste. Of course, if you're on an extreme budget and don't have the assumed ingredients on hand, her method and items are a good way to go. But, I posted my comment to share how we make it and, if anyone has the ingredients on hand, they might want to try it that way. Then they'll know how to make authentic elotes at home in the future if they maybe get a craving for it. I just wanted to share my steps, as a suggestion, for how to make elotes at home with ingredients from the DT...IF your DT carries them or you just happen to have them on hand at home. This is not me trying to say "Do it this way..." or "Buy these instead..." especially if one is really struggling to stay under $20. So...practical? Maybe not. Doable when budget allows or if you've got everything on hand? Absolutely. I hope you had a safe and happy 4th with family and friends. Be blessed.

I like your suggestion of plating things...because with my group, some of the parents really load their kids plates up and the kids don't eat even half of the food, so it wastes so much. The plating for people really saves from one person taking (and possibly wasting) everything and makes it fair.

@@DollarTreeDinners As far as budgets go, 1) A small pumpkin skinned and de-seeded cut into chunks, a can of yellow corn, a diced onion and a diced can of spam topped with a box of vegetable broth and you have a great fall soup. 2) For the kids, a 1lb frozen roll of sausage or ground beef cut into 1/4" slices and fried stacked on a plate with a bowl of dinner rolls and some fixings and condiments and they can pretend they're making crabby-patties. 3) A small bag of rice, steamed then fried with diced spam and a can of seasoned field peas & snaps makes a great fried rice dish, season to taste with anything else but the seasoned peas is enough. 4) 2 cans potatoes (sliced or diced if available), 8oz jar mayo, spoon of vinegar, spoon of sugar, spoon of relish, jar of pimentos (diced) and mix together adding potatoes last so you don't smash them mixing. Instant no cook potato salad (if too juicy add spoonful of instant potatoes to thicken). I've been on SSI for 4 yrs now due to medical, waiting for full retirement age, I'm getting really good at budgeting. Before anyone asks, I was declared fully disabled in court but one of my last 3 yearly incomes was $45 over the limit so SS cut it back to SSI which is basically welfare. I've only got 2 more years to claim full retirement which is cheaper than going through court again to get upgraded to disability status.

That dip is my kids favorite! We do it with corn chips instead of tortilla chips. I would love to see you get a rotisserie chicken & see how many meals you can make from the whole bird! I too love suddenly salad as a jump off recipe. I like to go through my fridge and take stalk on the veggies that absolutely need to be used up before they go bad. I then add some cheese olives and some kind of meat pepperoni salami or ham that I might have in the freezer and boom dinner 😊 Thanks I'm going to bake my hot dogs and check it out.

I lived in a developing country for a couple years and something interesting to me was that the hostess always prepared the plates. As a picky eater it definitely wasn't my favorite thing, but it was easy to see how it prevented people taking too large of portions or running out of some things. And when food was served buffet or family style the leftovers were often taken to other people so if the host wanted food for another day it was better to not put it out.

I bought a bacon ranch pasta salad kit, blue cheese dressing, mayonnaise, shredded pepper jack, and a packet of Buddig roast beef at my local Dollar Tree. I made the pasta but altered the sauce by using 2 tablespoons of mayo and two table spoons of blue cheese dressing with the included seasonings, and shredded the lunch meat. I mixed the meat, sauce, cheese, and pasta together. It was awesome! The next day, we added some crumbled feta, bacon bits, and a tablespoon of ranch dressing to change it up a bit and served it with our crudites, fruit and nut tray, and some tatziki for a nice summer lunch.

thanks for another great video. Hot dogs in the oven are good, but yes, they do tend to shrivel up some. Must be from something they are putting in the meat. My favorite way to do hot dogs is in the air fryer at 400 for about 10 minutes, depending on how dark you like your hot dogs. You can also throw in an ear of corn with them and it will taste like fresh, grilled corn. That is by far my favorite way to cook both things. Happy 4th. Stay safe everyone!!!!

The sloppy joes would be so yummy. Due to allergies we can't do the canned sloppy joes. If anyone else has that problem, I found an easy sauce of ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar. Mix it to taste and heat throughly before adding cooked meat.

Great job on this for only $20!! I'm impressed! As far as the hot dogs of that size, what I do sometimes is boil them in a sauté skillet with about half the size of the hotdog with water and kind of roll them around until the cook inside, then I dump any excess water and add a little bit of oil to brown them up a little bit. It works great because they don't dry out and have a nice snap. :)

Baked hot dogs are the best, one pan meal hot dogs and french fries, you can add the chili and cheese at the end just slice open the hot dog add the chili and cheese and put it back in oven for a few minutes and it's done, I use foil so I don't have to wash anything.

Idk if you know this but you can bake the hot dogs in a casserole dish on top of the baked beans. That's how my grandmother taught my mom then my mom taught me. You can use a flavored baked beans like Bush's. If you are using pork and beans, just add a little Karo or brown sugar and a couple of squires of mustard. Lay the hot dogs on top and bake until the edges of the beans get carnalized and the hot dogs a little golden. You can add a layer of bacon in between if you have it. Usually about 20-30 mins on 350 will do the trick.

I've shopped at Dollar Tree for a long time, but not in the food section. The refrigerated food section in ours is very small and filled with a lot of processed food. I recently came across your channel and have been binge watching for ideas. I'm going to try the Mexican Corn Salad today. I'd never heard of baking hotdogs in the oven, but I suppose it makes sense since dogs are put on the grill. I want to try it in the oven sometime. Your Manwich hotdogs look delicious. As for the Suddenly Salad Pasta Kit, for 40 cents more you can get twice the size box at Walmart.

Putting a small amount of oil in a skillet and sautéing the hot dogs is the best way I’ve ever found to cook hotdogs. SO GOOD!!

Have you ever tried making the hotdogs in the air fryer? We just took a trip to Disneyland and I cooked up a couple pack of Bar-S hotdogs and while still hot wrapped them up in foil and all we had to do was add a little ketchup mustard and relish. They come out really good!!!

As always… GREAT JOB! I had a thought about pre-serving, it’s such a great idea. What about investing in the little glass (4 pack) of pinch bowls? Maybe you could make a holiday “serving ware” video? Then you could reference that video when you do these holiday videos. People could budget it and use it over and over again.

@@PatriciaPerkowski I am legit the same way! You know those “veggie trays” that have like 5 slots and the little bowl in the middle… I’ve always thought about using that on Thanksgiving so my food doesn’t touch. 😂 I often use more than one plate for that very reason.
