How to Tint Glass Dollar Tree DIY

Hi everyone. I had so much fun trying my hand this week at tinting glass. A few years ago I saw someone tint a mason jar orange and turn it into a pumpkin/jack-o-lantern, with a candle inside. I've been wanting to try to tint glass ever since, but never got around to it. I had some jars I've been wanting to upcycle, with some other decorative jars that I picked up at Dollar Tree. So I figured now would be a good time to finally try this craft. The colors were interesting. Mixing the food coloring in the white Mod Podge you get a very unique looking color, and the color it ends up can look very different than expected. One of the jars I did looked blue at first, then after it was baked and dried it ended up looking more of a dark purple color.. No worries though. My first time making a jar it was a mess. I didn't let it drain long enough and it was a gloppy mess... I just let it cool and then I was able to peel it off fairly easily, though the bottom of the jar was a little harder to get it all out, but I managed... so if you do mess up, it's not the end of the world. Let it cool and start peeling. It also helps if you have a sharp edge like the end of a pair of scissors to lift up the edge to get it started..... anyway I really had a lot of fun tinting the glass and can't wait to experiment more with this technique. I hope you will try it yourself. It really is a lot of fun!
Just a very quick warning however.... Do NOT use the jars to store any food or drink once you've tinted them with Mod Podge. I am pretty sure everyone knows that but figured I'd put it here just in case :)
Thanks so much for watching!
Check back tomorrow to see what's new this week at Dollar Tree!
Rebecca

I just wanted to share a few tips here in case I missed anyone that is wanting to try this craft project... since posting the video I've made a few more jars and have learned a few things... the first one was to lower the temperature in the oven. I've tried several temperatures, 250^F, 225 ^F , and 200^F.... Here in Texas it's been pretty humid. Humid days I let the jars air dry upside down about 45 minutes to an hour longer (so about 2 hours) before baking......Then I use the lowest temp in the oven 200^F... it's helped me get a lot less bubbles. Recycled Jars bubbled the most at the higher temperatures. Dropping the temp to 200 has made a huge difference. Just leave the jars in and check on them every 30 minutes, take them out when they are transparent. I hope that helps y'all get a better end result. Thanks again or watching!

I'm so glad! I'm learning on humid days let them air dry longer. I seem to get less bubbles. I also lowered the temp in the oven to 200 and just let them bake longer , I think it was getting too hot too fast and causing it to bubble up. I hope those tips help you get a better end result than I did my first try :)

Thank you. I'm still getting some bubbles in my finished jars, but I'm learning that it must be the humidity because on days it's not so humid here I get a much smoother finish after about an hour of air dry & letting the excess drip out. Not sure if that tip will help, but thought it was worth mentioning :) I hope your jars turn out really pretty!

They are fun to make. My neighbor has this wire tree thing that people usually put fun colored wine bottles on and when the sun hits it, it shines really pretty, but instead she uses recycled jars and mod podge to make them all special colors and they are so pretty.

I had to lol remembering a few years ago, after I had made a rainbow set of mason jars using a similar technique...my very thorough cleaning gal hand washed them and was distraught when the color started to drip out. She was SO upset! I laughed and told her it was just glue and food coloring. Maybe I should have baked them! Great video!

oh my lol. I can imagine her washing the jars and thinking she ruined them lol. I'm late to the game I had no idea you could bake Mod Podge. I found some bottles at the store that were pre mixed orange that said you could bake it, so I thought I could just color my own. I've since looked up videos and am amazed how smooth some of them come out. I keep getting bubbles but I think it's just the humidity and my lack of patience to let them drip as long as they need to BEFORE I throw them in the oven lol.

it really is... I think I'm going to try to make one that is multi-color using the paint brush technique. I think it will be a good way to control where the color goes and maybe just bake it so the first section hardens, then move up blending to the next color... If it looks like I hope it does maybe I can use it to make a pretty ornament or lantern for a Christmas video... I'm so glad you liked them, I had fun experimenting lol.

Hi Brenda, I've made a few more jars and am sharing a tip with anyone who said they are thinking of trying the jars.... if its humid, increase the amount of time you let them sit and drip/air dry. I found I get a lot less bubbles in the end result. I hope that helps you get a nice finish on the jars if you try them :)

So really pretty. Some of them are just STUNNING, I love the depth of color you got too. I tried this several years ago, but used school glue instead of mod podge. They barely left a tint on the glass. I'll have to try again with mod podge next time.

I am going to try to come up with an amber color for fall and I think the bubbles in the glass with that color would make a really pretty vintage look :) glad I'm not the only one who liked the bubbles lol. I have been trying to get some that have a smoother look. here's what I've learned.... I lowered the temp in the oven to 200 and leave them in until they are transparent all the way around, no set time as humidity seems to be part of it. It's helped give a smoother look. I think they were getting too hot too fast and causing the bubbles to form. They were bubble free when they went in, but had bubbles when they came out using the higher temperatures. Also If it's a high humidity day I let them air dry and drip the excess longer, that also has helped. (hope that helps you too) happy crafting :)

Hi Rebecca. Great your tip to us. Instead of baking the glass after coloring with Mod & Colour, can we use heater or kind of hair dryer.

I was so worried they wouldn't work, but was surprised they turned out much better than I expected lol. Dollar Tree just started to carry ceramic paint that you set in the oven with heat. I bought some to try and will make a video to see how it works in the next few weeks. :) I hope it works it says it dries with no streaks, which is usually the issue with paint and glass. :)
