Hondo is doused in plot armor. It protects him from every situation. He could be fired at by 500 storm troopers and he would live. And I am happy with it.

I would imagine most battalions of 500 troopers would have special units armed with machine guns, flame throwers, or other special weapons. Besides, it wouldn’t seem crazy to assume Owen and beru probably took several blaster bolts before being burnt, so it is not like they would have been able to survive 500 troopers even if the imperial forces did not have special weapons. Also, disrupters were outlawed by the empire, but flame throwers were not. The empire had flame troopers just like the republic did. Now, my original comment was a joke. Nobody could survive being shot at directly by 500 storm troopers without the force. Squads of less than 30 clones were able to take out Jedi during order 66, so 500 storm troopers with regular blasters all firing at a target would likely disintegrate the target within a few seconds.

It does kill them. The knocking out thing was developed by writers who wanted to make the Stormtroopers badass. Basically, someone didn't like how they were in the original trilogy, so they wrote them in as these elite badass troops that were small in number, but highly trained. Well, someone then saw the continuity problems with them being terrible shots in the movies, so tried to throw in that they get knocked out instead of actually killed. When in reality, they get do get killed, and Stormtroopers aren't very good shots to begin with.
