2003 while back packing around Australia me and my fiancé where invited by her uncle in Canberra to a pub swap. Where all the locals from one pub swap pubs with locals from another. We were both 22 at the time. After being fed we just got some drinks went and played the pokies. It wasn’t until we got on the bus back to the original pub we realised what we had got into. There was a couple of play fights on the bus between our hosts. When we got back to the original pub we were pretty drunk and singing along to bat out of hell with them that the guy behind the bar said with a certain look on his face that we had made some “good friends that night”…..so anyway a few nights later my wife’s uncle invited us around to a proper aussie bbq at “angrys’” house. All was going fine but there we noticed there were more biker jackets. But we just thought they seemed a nice bunch of geezers and just mingled with them. There were about 20 of them. It was all going well until my fiancé was helping angrys wife set out the salad and dropped a whole bowl of beetroot on the pure white carpet. That turned a few heads but while my wife was mortified and asking for salt angry came and whispers in my ear it was time for us to leave. While everyone was laughing still the mood had changed we made our excuses said our goodbyes and made our way home as ya would at any party where you had left indelible mark on someones carpet. It was about 2 years later we found watching documentary we realised that it wasn’t a friendly weekend biker club we had been drinking with we recognised the patches,It was the Rebels! I reckon they were impressed that a young pommee couple had the balls to hang out with the earned a little bit of respect. All in all we had good time hanging out with them. We didn’t judge them and i think that went a long way that and we were respectful. Though we did leave town a couple of days later.
