1 of my grandsons was born Nov 2021 right before the formula shortage started. I worried day in and day out about us not being able to find formula for him. He had to be on sensitive formula and my daughter could not produce enough breast milk for him. We would travels 2, 3 or even up to 5 towns away to even find it at times. To know these people was buying formula just to waist pissed me off. I also heard of not just one person but a few who didnt think moms should give their babies formula either buy it or steal it just to destroy it. There was not a day that passed that the fear of not being able to find the kind he needed wasnt there.

❤️thank you❤️At one point the only place that was producing the type of formula my grandson took was around the Scotland area across the ocean. I would always post pictures of the formula shelves in several groups on Facebook for other moms to know what store had what kind. To make matters worse funds was tight due to covid so having the money to travel so far away from home added to the stress. I tried to help other parents/caretakers as much as I could. I would let others know when I was traveling to a different town so if they needed any and I could get it while I was there. Even though I knew my grandson depended on formula there was still guilt when I took the only or last can. But there was so many times 1 can is all we could find. I was so relieved when he was just at a year old and he could switch to regular milk. I still worried about other babies not having enough even after he stopped. My 9th grandbaby was born this past June. During my daughters pregnancy I feared that history would repeat itself. Thankfully so far we have not had to go through that hell again. Never would I have thought there would ever be a formula shortage in the US or anywhere for that matter.

I’ve always wanted a reborn doll. I can’t have children, and we can’t afford IVF or adoption, and the foster care system is a mess. I just want to hold “my” baby. There’s something that makes me feel better inside holding a baby. I know that’s not normal. I know people have problems with that and think I’m weird. But there’s no way in hell I would ever use REAL food to feed my doll. That’s so wasteful and disgusting. There’s so many real babies that go hungry because their parents can’t afford formula. I can’t believe people are so entitled that they think their doll deserves food more than an ACTUAL living baby.

While I love seeing people, including younger kids, who are interested in taking care of and raising babies, I feel like it’s kinda insane that people will spend thousands of dollars to buy fake babies and then use real formula that parents with actual living babies might really need. I understand that some people use these dolls to grieve lost children, as mentioned in the video, but sometimes I think it can get a little excessive. I agree. As with most things (and especially on TikTok) having a bit of interest in most things is fine. When it gets obsessive , excessive & literally impacts real people, you gotta get some help and insight into what ur doing. As someone who has miscarried multiple times, this would crush me even more. I can understand it would bring comfort to some, and that's fine, but when it becomes a lifestyle? It's not healthy to cope with anything by replacing it with something artificial indefinitely. I have a reborn doll, I bought it from eBay for about $200. It’s the only one I have and probably the only one I’ll have. The only thing I buy for the doll is clothing. It’s fun to dress the doll up from time to time. The doll is weighted too so it’s nice to hold when I have I’m having anxiety

YES. My son was only 5 pounds when he was born and didn't gain weight for quite a while due to feeding issues, he also was tube fed and would only tolerate ready to eat Similac sensitive. We usually a hard time finding formula so we'd stock up when we could, but all the premie clothing was just totally gone no matter where we went we did find a few items here and there. I did think it was kind of crazy, now seeing this makes me so angry that these women feel justified taking from real babies in need.

I had an encounter with a reborn "mommy". We unexpectedly ended up adopting a 5th child and had a lot of things for a baby including that he ended up showing up with and we had duplicates. He also grew really fast. I was in a local free group and offered an almost new carseat, 2 boxes of newborn clothes, and a half case of diapers. A woman reached out and claimed the stuff, and referred to the reborn as her son. She asked for additional items that I had offered up and warned to know if I could throw in some pacifiers or bottlers because she really needed them. Then when meet up came she couldn't get a ride and was really upset that I wouldn't skip my kids' parent teacher conferences to drive the stuff to her. Then she offered me $10 to drive the stuff 20 minutes one way out of my way. The whole time I was making it clear that if she didn't take the stuff, I was going to donate to the foster care closet. I then did exactly that. About a week later she wanted to know when I could drive it to her again. Then about a month or so after that she ended up getting very ceremoniously banned from the group for being pushy and that's when it came out all this stuff was for a reborn and not even a real baby.

@@TheSamjane4unfortunately those using reborns bc of infertility, pregnancy loss or infant death tend to go downhill quickly. It just makes them delusional about it. Not all but most. They haven’t recommended reborns for this reason in grief therapy for a long time. I’ve had 12 documented miscarriages, ivf and had a baby girl, then 4yrs later got pregnant and carried her to term on my own. I’ve been in the grief counseling community/groups since my second miscarriage. Some people also do it with pets instead of dolls. It’s really sad.

I remember having a baby during that shortage. In the UK they didn’t have an issue like we did in the US. It wasn’t “having to go to 2 or 3 stores” it was me having to have family across the country find one can and mail it to me. Me posting on Facebook begging people to check every store they went to in their state to send to me. It was me having to give my baby formula a few times that made him sick because it was either that or he would STARVE. It makes me so angry hearing people downplay that shortage. It was horrible. It was terrifying. To know that so many babies went hungry or had to drink formula that made them sick because their mom couldn’t find their brand…. And some lady was giving that formula to a doll and then dumping it down the sink…. Makes me furious.

When I was baby I was sick a lot and could only digest a certain type of formula. It was so stressful for my parents because it was hard to find and kinda expensive and they stopped marking it at a point. So then they had to find a NEW one for me to not starve or get really ill. The Dad was traumatized about it, not being able to provide for his newborn. Mom too. I am a reborn doll artist and have been for almost 14 years now. They take many day and countless hours to make and years to master. I just collect them for fun and they are very therapeutic to hold as they're weighted to feel real and so it does stimulate the dopamine response a lot of women get when holding a real newborn. But to me, the collecting part is mainly just a hobby. I love the art and beauty behind each doll. For the most part, the community is extremely wholesome and fun. The people that you hear most about of course are going to be the ones that are the drama and attention seekers, per usual. It's awful what that woman was doing. We don't claim her. Most of us have always used "fake formula" for display purposes which was either made of fabric softener or magic milk.

My grandmother bought a reborn doll years ago at a yard sale and at first it weirded me out a bit since its nearly a dead ringer to me as a baby. However, its been pretty helpful in the last year or so. She is struggling now a bit cognitively and has some anxiety issues. Holding it can make her settle and relax a bit while it also prompts her to remember all her kids and grandkids baby stories. Its been pretty helpful as a therapy tool but i do think they need to be used as tools and not a crutch.

I did this too when I was younger. It's just what kids do 😅 When my mom went on a walk with me I took my doll with me too but the difference to these videos is that I was a kid that simply played with the dolls. My mom does reborn dolls, and I grew up around them. She’s never used formula, she’s always used fabric softener in the bottle. It lasts for years. She also never treated them like actual babies. She almost just treated them like art. She let me paint a few, and I treated them like baby dolls. The kits themselves come in a cardboard box normally, and the kits themselves are anywhere from $50-100 dollars. She posted a picture of my daughter on her personal Facebook, and someone from the reborn community reached out and asked if they could use my daughter for a doll kit. My mom said that was a huge honor, but no, because some pedos use them for nefarious reasons as well. Not everyone in the reborn doll community are freaks, but there’s definitely a lot

I'm a counselor and work mostly with women who have lost their babies, and I also volunteer at local nursing homes with older people who have dementia type issues. With the women who have lost babies the dolls give them the emotional support of being able to work through their trauma in a physical and mental health way. For the older women, and some men, the dolls actually help calm them because they have something that "depends" on them, and that they can care for. The Reborn doll community is much more than the "Kooks" that many people make them out to be.

That's not what the point of this was. Understandably they are used for therapy and the grieving process. What is NOT okay is buying up formula or other items for the children that actually need these things. It's hard enough to afford food. Then when there are shortages? No way should these items be snatched up for reborn babies. There has to be a line somewhere. And I believe in anything good provided, there are those who take advantage of it. Which in turn affects the individuals who do benefit from the reborns.

9:28 fun fact I had to have a formula that was very hard to find because other formulas contained stuff that I was allergic to and I couldn’t have breast milk, so no, that’s not what I wanted that’s what I needed to have in order to survive the first 1-2 years of my life. Some babies don’t ‘want’ specific formulas it’s what they need in order to not die from starvation, malnutrition or an allergic reaction.

I'm autistic and own a reborn because cuddling one helps me calm down when I'm having a meltdown. The feeling of caring for something is a reminder that I matter when I'm depressed. I'm from the reborn doll community, and I don't claim these people. Reborn dolls are for ages 16+. Children shouldn't be using them! As for formula, I don't think people should be using it for their reborn. You can easily make reborn formula with lotion and water and it won't expire. I'm sick of reborn doll parents creating others in the community over petty bs. Owning a reborn is supposed to be a way of coping with mental illness, not a form of clout!

I absolutely love your comment! My 8 yr old son has Autism (level 3) and was completely nonverbal until he said his first word at almost 7. He still has very limited communication and struggles with anxiety, phobias and his emotions. He goes to a public school but is in a life skills class the whole day except for during special activities and his encore classes like gym, library, etc. He does extended school year where the kids that would be in danger of regressing over summer break go to school from the second week of July until the first week of August. He was really struggling with wanting to go and kept begging to stay home. At home he has a stuffed Elmo, a stuffed fish that looks like Nemo and a tiny blanket with a puppy plushie head and arms attached to it. He's had the puppy blanket thing since he was 5 months old. The way I describe it makes it sound creepy lol but it's one of those lil blankies for babies that they carry around for comfort. He carries them everywhere with him at home or when we go places. He calls them his buddies and they definitely provide emotional support for him, give him more confidence and help when his anxiety is high. He can't have them at school with him for fear that something will happen to them. The puppy blanket is almost 9 years old so if it got lost it can't be replaced plus if we ever tried replacing any of them he would reject them since they aren't the ones he had. He knows how his smell and feel so replacing them with something new just isn't an option. We also didn't think they would be okay with him taking them to school since kids aren't suppose to bring toys in but for him they aren't just toys. In his life skills class though the teacher has a few baby dolls and he saw one and instantly became attached to it. While he was doing the extended school year program this last month his attachment grew and he started carrying this doll with him the whole day at school. They eventually let him bring the doll home with him as long as he brought it back. He has a home health aide that goes to school with him that helps him all day and once she saw how in love he was with this doll, she purchased one to replace the one from school so he could keep her. His attitude toward school changed so much as soon as he started carrying the doll around with him. He's so loving towards her and wants her to do everything with him. She sleeps with him and his Elmo, Nemo and puppy blanket. It's been such an amazing thing for him. He has less anxiety about going and is more willing to do school work when he has her. During the regular school year they're going to let him bring her with him too. I'm just hoping none of the other kids in the school or the teachers say anything mean to him because some people still seem to have issues with boys playing with dolls which is crazy to me. Personally I think all boys should play with dolls. Most grow up to be father's one day or at least be around babies at one point so why shouldn't they learn to be loving and caring with a baby doll when they're young. Your comment is so on point though. I use to work as a nurse's aide in a nursing home for elderly. We had a lot of residents who had Alzheimer's and dementia that would carry around baby dolls because they thought they were still young taking care of their children. They would often get upset saying they could hear the baby crying. Once they were given dolls it made them feel better. You could see an improvement in their mood and everything. They really can make a difference for some people but what the people like this lady in the video are doing is disgusting. They're taking from children that are actually in need and making a mockery of something that can be a great help to some people. It's just sad. I'm really happy for you that you found something to help you when you need that comfort! Please know that no matter what you always matter. You have a purpose in life and you're needed in this world even if it doesn't always feel like that!

This was years ago but my mom & I had my niece for a weekend very young. She had colic pretty bad & even with drops we had trouble getting her to sleep. I remember quietly standing outside her room wanting to rip my hair out because I couldn't help her. She said a shortage is when the factories can’t make the product…The reason for the formula shortage was because one of the major manufacturers had to recall and throw away a ton of formula because it was exposed to contamination. Like one or a few babies died from it so they pulled it and dumped their stock. They had to clean out everything in the factories and get it fixed and inspected etc which took a long time to get running again. This was at the same time as all the supply chain issues. I took a child development class during my freshmen year of highschool, some point of the semester the teacher ended up giving anyone who wanted it a opportunity to look after a fake baby. It was for extra credit, we pretty much had to do the bare minimum of taking care of the fake baby while recording us doing so. I never took up on the opportunity (I already knew what it was like taking care of a baby, I helped raised my nephew for a few months). The teacher never told us to use actual baby products, last I knew they might've provided some stuff.

I am a reborn artist. Those are expensive because they are made by hand, from sculptors who create the sculpt to the artists who paint and assemble them. I live in California and literally had to send my cousin formula to Texas because she couldn't find any. But sure there wasn't a shortage. If she was actually a mom she'd understand you can't just change a baby's formula especially if they have certain dietary restrictions.

I had some reborn dolls, I gave my daughter, Maylie, to my grandmama because I wasn’t taking care of her correctly these dolls can actually trick your mind, during the time I owned one I had fully convinced I was a mother, until I realized this wasn’t healthy and gave her to my grandmama. I wouldn’t recommend getting one unless you really do need it to cope.

Reborn dolls are super “high end” I guess but you can get a doll just as cute and realistic that isn’t one of these and it’s just not as soft and junk. Plus, there’s SO many other kinds of dolls that are far better for your budget and WAY less creepy and more likely to be a good conversation starter than a “dude what is up with the fake baby?” Thing. I personally think that these kinds of dolls should be left for those who need them, like medical training services and people dealing with trauma. It is a very profitable industry I suppose, but it’s just… not a good idea imo to collect them. Collect cotton dolls (like $20-$40 each for a cute chibi plushy) or ball jointed dolls or something, not… uncanny valley stuff that is used for therapy and medical training.

My ex best friend had a reborn doll (she was around 8 at the time and i was 10) and idk why but i was both scared of it and thought it was cute, but now these dolls just give me the uncanny valley feeling. I still have a couple baby dolls from when i was little, they're just the generic baby doll kind though, and luckily they dont scare me! 😊

I watched this documentary once about two people who love dolls. One was a normal dude who watched tv with sex doll, but the other was a woman who had these reborn dolls and she treated them like real babies, changing, feeding, waking up at night, going on walks and to the store with them etc. And she had real kids. She picked her real kids up with the reborn doll in a stroller. These real children had to live with a mother who was grumpy in the morning cause she stood up three times last night to feed her reborn doll.

When I was younger my friend showed my her reborn doll on the bus back in around 2017, I told my grandma that i’d want one and she bought me it, named her Kylie, and she wears a little cat onesie and has a binky (a paci/pacifier) and a bottle with fake milk that can drain (those things everyone that were magical when they were little lol) and I loved her sm, and now I have her to my sister and i’m glad to see my little sis pull her around in a wagon with her other dolls pretending to take them to school or the store, i’m happy to see that atleast someone is being normal and plying with a toy like a kid should

Reborn dolls are actually a great therapy for mothers that had a miscarriage or lost a baby, but they have to have a therapist too, it's a way of dealing with the grieving process, they have to be aware that it isn't a real baby, when they beggin to get too invested into it, that's where things get out of hand.

I own a reborn doll but I use pacifiers and bottles from dollar tree, use water instead of formula, and use a single diaper for a long while until I wash the doll again. I don’t understand the formula thing and why people use it for FAKE baby’s but it’s cruel, especially during a formula shortage.

My Mom used to make these sorts of dolls for herself back in the early and mid 2000s because she always loved the idea of baby dolls that were realistic, but she had to stop the hobby after she found out that she was allergic to most of the materials the dolls were made of. She just liked the idea of applying the ink and paint to make the doll's limbs and face look more natural, and she loved the details of making the eyes, lips and nails a little glossy, as well as drilling out the nostrils for a little more realism and weighting them with beads so they could sink into a blanket like a sleepy baby. She always wanted to try to make a POC reborn doll but she just couldn't figure out how to make the palms and soles light enough to look like a real baby. She did make a doll modeled after me once that was pretty cute and even used my own hair after I grew it out and got it trimmed just for that. My brother, who hates dolls, thought it was creepy af, understandably. She just liked the process of taking a doll from Walmart and transforming it into a OOAC collectible. Not really any different than toy modification in that regard. She wouldn't DREAM of trying to pretend they were actually alive or anything.

Very few do that. I’m an artist and in a lot of online groups and forums promoting or posting the use of real formula will get you banned from the group. Everyone is very embarrassed by these people and hate being associated in any way.

These aren’t kids, though. This community is populated by mostly middle aged women. The dolls are very expensive and no average parent is spending that kind of money to hand over to a child. I remember when these first became a thing. It was over 30 years ago. My aunt was showing me them at a craft fair at her church. My sister was still kinda young and baby obsessed. My aunt laughed then and told her, “oh no, these aren’t for children!” She wasn’t wrong! Even back then they were running about a grand each! Ridiculous imo.

When my daughter was 7-9 she was obsessed with being a doll mama. It was super cute and her grandma did get her a reborn doll. And she grew out of it. She accidentally left one of them in front of the electric fireplace and the back of its head melted 🤣💀 it was sad, but it's funny now

This is unhealthy the reborn community it’s deeply disturbing. I sadly had a stillborn and I know that for me a reborn doll would not have helped in my healing /grief process. One of thoughts that was hard for me to deal with is my daughter would be forever a baby I would never see her walk, talk and become her own person.
