This is the first time on your channel, and I’m liking how ya do things. I have ‘63 ragtop and thought I need to learn about the front end. I’d really like to do a disc brake conversion, so I’m looking for videos about that. I’ll look for that on your channel. Thanks.

Revisited this video, Jason as my dad wants me to redo his link pins on his 65 bug. This is a great how to video. Hope all is well. Was stoked to see your turbo motor upload. You’ve worked so hard on that. Take it easy Ben 🇬🇧

I watched your first link pin video where you made your own thrust washer, then discovered this gem! I see you got that vise. Hey man Kevin here from Australia. Great video ill be putting the bigger thrust washers in my king pin carriers soon . You do need to get a bearing press for your garage there cheap to buy and make jobs like this one a lot easier. Anyhoo thanks for sharing great content as usual. ✌ Peace man.

Really enjoy your videos. By the way, using the link pin itself makes a great tool to drive in the link pin bushings. yup. What i really want to know is did the king pin fit nice and tight in the spindle? I have also installed the Empi 2 1/2" drop spindles. I've been back to the VW store that sold this kit to me. What happened is, i installed the link and king pin bushings, honed the king pins and put it all together and installed it in the car. While installing the wheel, i felt movement. i tightened the lug nuts and grasped the tire at 12 o'clock and at 6 o'clock and the wheel moved up and down. damn. Took it all apart and what i found is the kingpin is real loose in these brand-new drop spindles. Dealer pulled all his boxes of kingpins and we measured all to see if one would fit the spindle hole. I brought two king pins home and installed one. Still movement I'm upset. Watched you to see if you checked vertical movement. Yours seemed nice and tight but the king pin is not supposes to move. The knuckle as they call it with the honed bushings do the piviting back and forth. I hate to move on. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like your are either missing the correct thrust washer or it is sized incorrectly. If you check out the video description you'll find a link to order thrust washers. Bug City [The only site I found that carries OE German thrust washers in multiple sizes] - www.bugcity.com/shop/shop.lasso?cid=10&scid=179&r1=pt&-session=BugCitySess%3A42F945210521a1921DMK626338AA

Jason, you referenced 0.002” but your white board says 0.020”...0.020” sounds more like it. 0.002” is really tight. When I get my book, I’ll try to dig it up.
@JWClassicVW4 жыл бұрын
Ok..ok.. you got me looking now... so the book states +/- .02mm and that works out to .007" ish... lol so .002" is definitely closer than if you went with .02" that seemed a bit much. The board needed the dang mm. 😄😃😃

So the king pin hole and the link pin shim holes need to line up with the zerk fitting holes?
@JWClassicVW Жыл бұрын
There is a hole in the new bushing installed for the king pins that also needs to be notched. The link pin bushing also have a hole, both need to be lined up with the zert hole.

JW you need to use lots more grease on the bearings. And use Valvoline Red it stays where you put it .even fill the dust cap?Not all the way because it will pop off while you drive but some. About the C-19 here they are saying to start opening some but here it was just 4 cases turned to 94 . Well only 37 out of 100 people get sick , the 63 other people are carriers , thats the ones you got to watch out for.

Emailed you regarding thrust Measuring Thanks
@JWClassicVW4 жыл бұрын
I saw your email, should be pretty simple to find the thrust washer you need. Just subtract the tolerance from the measurement you have so close to (0.14) inch... then convert to mm. So a thrust washer around 3.56mm. But that is for one side, the other side may be different.

you spent all that money on brake upgrades and the billet hub cover but did not spend a few bucks and get the newer style bearing nut with cap screw... Just because the .02 feeler gauge fits in does not mean the clearance is .02. based on the ease of movement, probably a bit more but looks ok. Then you hit two hammers together to drive the bushings in. never do that... not sure why you put the bushings on the belt sander. would have to go back on that. If they were link pin bushings you just screwed up the shim count... if they were king pin bushings, the only thing you would do after install is flat file inside the c where the spindle and spacers go if needed. you can run the reamer through the link pin bushings if reusing (or even new) to be sure nothing is mushroomed.
