I just purchased one with the motor, it didn't have a guide, just found one on ebay. The motor causes the circuit break to to shut off power. 50 dollars is what I gave for it. You video is a great guide. Thank you.

I have this jointer and the 8 1/4 table saw sitting on the metal stand sold with it as an add on option allowing you to use one motor for both saw and jointer. I also have the lathe purchased later that year. My grandfather purchased them brand new. I build custom furniture for residential and commercial clients. It's a dedicated little setup to this very day on expensive hard woods. It's absolutely amazing that tools built just shy of SEVENTY years ago are even usable/operating but being able to do so with enough consistent precision to be an asset in fine woodwork. They damn sure don't make them like that anymore!

I am collecting the vintage Craftsman saws, planers, jointers and other large power tools for the reason that the common tool made 70 years ago today would be considered commercial grade equipment. Having a lathe and mill supplies those parts you just can't buy. Sears was a tragic loss, especially the parts department. Even older Skil power tools were made to last. I have a variable speed Skil drill my father bought when I was 8 years old I still use. The only part replaced was the plug, the cord is still original. The consumer is getting hosed with tools that are not worth having. Sure good tools are a real investment, but if you bought them back then and kept them in a good state they are worth more than the new offerings. But them $1 back then is worth $12+ dollars today. Even our currency was cheapened. :(

Mine came really rusty, everything took a ride in my blast cabinet and I noticed surface rust starting again. Not only does it stop the rust it looks great.

------ shame you didn't show the removal of the cutterhead and bearings ( the bearings ALWAYS need replacement in an old machine ) - at least you posted a link to the original owner's manual which shows the parts layout if not the actual removal process in Part 2

the side with the snap ring is the side it comes out. a brass drift punch is what you need. Make sure all the grub screws are out of it first. Mine was buggered up bad. The guy before me must have tried it without removing the grub screws as the shaft had the tell tale marks left behind. It should not take much to drive it out if it was never molested before. I had to spend some time with a file to make it right again. I was considering making a new shaft. It took 30 minutes with a file to get it to go together like it is supposed to fit. Not only were the grub screws forced in the flat sid but the round area as well. I was considering removing the head on mine with a sawsall.

Just got through with one of these jointers today. Mine must have been sitting outside longer than yours, mine was much more rusty than yours...

A lot of these old Craftsman wood working tools got abused. I credit it to then heirs not knowing the value of tools in general that they don't use. It's sad. I have several items that are getting new leases on life. I collected tools for several trades. I taught my son how to use them. He helps restore them, he knows about their care and feeding. I gave him some sage advice... My father had a great job but the government contract ran out. He started working his well stocked wood hobby shop and made more money than he did with Rockwell. He never intended to do that but bills don't stop coming. Learn to use what I'm leaving and you'll never go hungry. So when I am out playing he sits in and then gets hands on. One day he may need it.

I have a later version table saw / jointer combo that I bought used years ago... and I'm giving it a bit of a tuneup. I rarely used the jointer and the blades (just 2 in this model) were pretty rough when I bought it. They measure approximately 4 1/16" in length, 11/16" wide and 1/16" thick. Where can I find suitable replacements??? All I've been able to find are 1/8" thick - would those work? Thanks.

Give me the model number of of the saw and I'll look around. I've not done an 8 inch.

I answered part of my own question by measuring the gap between the chip breaker and the drum. 1/8" won't work - it has to be 1/16". The jointer model # is 103.21840. I have one lead on knives - but they are $40 - not including shipping and handling. I may opt for a jig and try to sharpen the ones I have first.... Thanks...@@OnCNCcom

Actually they were the wrong screws and were only holding by a couple of threads. They were replaced with something with a better fit. Somebody was in mine before me.

Hi. I have a similar craftsman jointer, but it's the 6inch. Right now, the fence won't "return" over the blade after doing a cut, so I think the spring needs to be adjusted. Would this be something thay I could get too without taking the entire jointer a part?

I have a 6 inch but have not gone into it at this point in time. If the pivot is stiff from rust a little 3in1 oil and working it in my fix your problem, if not you will have to take it to the workbench and flip it over and take that section apart for cleaning. I don't have the model number of your unit, but is you give it to me I can provide you with a link to the manual.
