Restoring an old Craftsman Jointer

Your machine your rules, but it's best practice when dealing with flat milled surfaces to never use abrasives on them.

Hey Farris, so what would you recommend for rust removal if not an abrasive? I'm getting an older jointer that has rust on it

In feed and out feed tables need to be flat and co-planar. Palm sanding is going to leave an uneven surface (can’t tell by eye balling) .

Harbor freight sells a chemical called evaporust. Soak paper towels in in then smooth the paper towels on the surface you want to clean. Cover the paper towels with plastic wrap so the chemical doesn’t evaporate and dry out. Let sit for 24 hours come back and remove the paper towels and plastic wrap and clean with #0000 steel wool

What I've read is that you should place a known flat piece of metal on the surface and then run some feeler gauges under it to see if they fit anywhere. I'm about to restore my own old craftsman jointer that I got on Facebook marketplace for $75. Wish me luck!

I lost the blade lock pieces for mine the only option I was able to find was a full spindle assembly for a little over $100 .I know I have the old ones but ya about that .I know thay are with the old blades 😃

How do you replace those blades and if you did which blades did you buy. Have the same model also looking to restore.

I didn't replace the blades, I did sharpen them using sandpaper. www.instructables.com/How-to-sharpen-your-woodworking-tools-with-sandpap/

If that's the same one I have and the knives are 4-3/8 x 11/16 x 1/8, look for Freud C330 knives. I recently found them on Amazon for about USD 15 for the set of 3.
