SECorBust I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it really improves the brakes performance!

You could probably get by with lubricating the piston with a bit of brake fluid. I have to say since I rebuilt those brakes they work better then when I got them and have continued to do so a year later. I found that little tub on ebay for £3 shipped.

Is the silicone grease necessary? Does the grease not wear off the parts after a bit of use?

Take a look and see if it looks like the piston is going in straight. It may be mis-aligned which could cause it to bind up. Failing that, try opening up the master cylinder with it sitting level in order to release the pressure on the piston and see if that helps get it back in.
