If you're having idle problems that aren't caused by boost leaks, do the electrical tests in this video, 1 minute can save you hours of head scratching. There are 8 tests, 8 positions that you can probe with a multimeter that will reveal a ton of information about your idle and throttle control system. Do these tests before you even bother with removing it. But if it's leaking boost (and it probably is now that it's almost 30 years old...) watch this video, read this description for parts info, and search for the part numbers to find vendors. You can fix it.
This video covers everything you never wanted to know about turbo DSM throttle bodies. Probably more. I'm putting this here as a resource for the community if for no other reason than because I have all 3 turbo throttle body models and I had to do it to one of them anyway. I ran into lots of issues because the one I had to rebuild was a 90. These are the oddest and rarest, hardest ones to source parts for. This is now the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th throttle bodies I've rebuilt and I see 2 more in my future for sure. It's a job so commonplace to me I take it for granted... and in my mind, everyone already knows everything about how to do it.
Because:
There's already a ton of information about this on message boards, archived VFAQ's, and extinct image hosts. But someone needed to spend entirely too much time, effort and money to update the format. Something will replace KZbin in a few years, and my efforts can die here just the same. This takes nothing away from all the great people who have posted info on this topic. They have all genuinely helped the community. It's because of their efforts over the years that anyone is still talking about this at all today. There are other videos on this subject, too. Those people should tag me in their video info-so that their videos will stand a chance against what Google's algorithms want my viewers to watch. Remember when the recommended videos were actually on-topic with the one you're watching? I don't want to be the only source of anyone's info. I'm just throwing myself into the pile.
As for the viewers, if you do exactly what I do, the same way I do it, you'll only have the same results I achieve. ...which is okay in the case of this video... but I want all of you to be better than that.
The channels I recommended in the video indeed are both friends of mine. I pull no punches. They're friends, and they make DSM videos. They both contributed to my production AND to this topic. They've helped me an awful lot over the years. If you like DSM content, click their subscribe buttons and the worst thing that could happen is you'll get more DSM-related content. If this helped you, it's a free way to give back to the community. I promise you won't get spammed.

Unfortunately, CAPS does not reveal any further details beyond the gaskets and the throttle body as a complete assembly. Believe me, I was disappointed. Then I discovered that all years of service and overhaul manuals did not cover this procedure. Perhaps Mitsubishi did not intend for these to be rebuilt? Did not trust their mechanics? Perhaps they simply underestimated their enthusiasts? People who intend to keep a car running beyond its designed lifespan are going to find a way.

Thank you Casey! On nearly every upload I think about how lucky I am that people watch these videos. Almost nobody owns these cars nowadays... I think about how much more popular I'd be if I were oh say... boosting a 5.0L Coyote or installing an LS-6 in a toaster oven... I try to do what I can to keep it interesting. I'm thankful for your time and feedback!

I rebuilt my 1990 throttle body a few years back. You can use the following which were identical to the mitsu seals. Skf 3030 (cr 8x12x3 hm4 r) and Skf 3930 (cr 10x14x3 hm4 r). I have had zero boost leaks with these on my 1990 tb. I do pressurized boost leak testing often. Hope this helps. Great content as always.

Working on a 93 throttle body right now because it was leaking massively. This video was a great resource. Thank you for posting. I did resort to an impact screwdriver for the throttle plate screws, and I used a tap to clean up the threads before installing new screws. Finally, I'm pretty sure this one has been rebuilt before because it was pretty marred up where the seals go in. I had to shave the outer lip down slightly because of a small ridge that had formed.

I bought chicago rawhide seals for the 1990 throttle body from a local seal distributor. They were able to provide me with the exact sizes Mitsubishi used after I did some leg work and got the seal numbers . Last time I rebuilt a 1991-1994 throttle body I once again ordered SKF seals from a local shop for $8 a piece (different more helpful shop this time). The seals weren't in the system but they were in the book so thankfully the guy ordering made a call to SKF and I bought 4 seals (half of all stock in Canada). When it comes to finding O-rings you could have gone to a seal shop that specializes in O-rings (Hi-Tech seals for me and Texan's) They would probably let you try out a few sizes until you got what you needed, plus you could get different materials. I gave up on my 90 throttle body so if you want a spare throttle position sensor pay shipping and it's yours.

YYAAAASSSSS I did the seals on my 90 throttle body to fix some nasty boost leaks I had with the help of a dsmtuners article. 3:15 I remember the article warning the reader at least 3 times to be careful not to strip those screws, they're a pain. The heat and penetrating oil are a great tip, I'm going to have to remember that on the next one I do.

I don't own anything with a 4g63 but this video as been extremely helpful, insightful and entertaining. I've found myself lacking motivation for a number of reasons over the course of the last year and have found it hard to go out to my shed and do anything. I recently rewatched cylinder head 201 again and found myself out in my shed stripping down a spare cylinder head for my 405 mi16. This lead to replacing coolant hoses on the engine already in the car, witch lead to other small jobs being done. One of those jobs was porting and polishing a set of jenvey throttle bodies that are waiting to go on the car. My point is jafro's enthusiasm and passion for what he is doing is infectious. Thank you jafro!

I finally figured out one of the biggest things I've always appreciated about this channel: the way you talk very smoothly in an off-the-cuff fashion. It may or may not be scripted (and most likely is for the more technical bits), but it flows very well and sounds more like you're just giving a voice over as you watch your own work. I heard a few minor hiccups in your commentary in this video that caught my attention, and pointed me to this. Thanks for all your effort, and for building something other than a "5.0 Coyote'. It's always a joy to watch.

How fun you make ticky videos! It doesn’t matter what kind, except the electrical ones. You know my bone to pick, but I am not beating that dead horse again only to be ignored! You just keep pressing and I am glad you are getting Patreon support now and I believe I spoke of this in one of my former comments long before you actually got on this wagon. I hope you keep gaining support from these people! Your channel is important to many including myself. If you cannot do it like you do, find a channel that has people you identify with and you learn there are others who are as fanatical about things that you have a passion for! Keep pressing!😁👍🏻
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not ignoring you at all actually... I'm watching you go through the catalog and catch up. I was trying not to give you the spoilers about the electrical fixes is all. ;) Dangit, I just did. That trunk run is gone except for the stereo equipment. It's all fused and safe now. Battery relocation fixed 90% of what ailed it, and the shootout video you just watched is where I fixed the ECU pins and my wiring issues. This car has never run so strong, so reliably or started up so fast when it's cold. You look at the key now and she fires. It's fantastic. The failsafes I built into the water methanol kit work great because they're solid state and operate separately from my ECU. If it goes into failsafe, it drops boost to wastegate pressure where the ECU won't even break a sweat to manage fuel correctly. The ECU doesn't even know when it's in failsafe mode, it just thinks all of a sudden that it's a stock turbo DSM and does its thing. It's great! But yeah, I was just trying not to give you spoilers. I uploaded a new video Sunday and it's kept me very busy. Thank you for going through so many videos and following this car's journey. ;)
@markphilpot4981
@markphilpot4981 5 жыл бұрын
Not trying to pick here. But you have grumbled about your wiring harnesses all before in past videos. I saw the brilliance of that methanol/water injector circuit and how it managed to be independent of the ecu! That was quite amazing stuff from someone who claims to not like electrical stuff. The fact is I think I complemented you on that. You have far greater skills than you let on to. Your research certainly is unquestionable! I don’t complement anyone for the sake of doing it. In my world you earn yours through your work and your work proves worthy of such! You have the skills people who view you admire or else you would not have the support from the community you serve. You exhibit those skills and explain them in a manner unlike what some of the others can’t and without the pretension and know it all attitude others on this medium so eagerly express. You are unique Jafro in many ways and this is why you will continue to prosper while others fail. Prosperity takes many forms. It does not have to mean you are rich! In your case, it means your fan base is solidly behind you and your fan base is also acting like a runaway snowball downhill. You’ve earned this and if my situation were not what it is, I would be a Patreon supporter as well. Mine is not such as I am on a fixed income. It doesn’t allow it Yet! I did say yet. When it does, you can be certain I will be one! I’ve been encouraging others to do so if you’ve read my last three or so comments. If I cannot help one way, I try to help in another way! That is how I am made and how I roll! 😊👍🏻😁👏

It's okay. I put this out here for free for everybody. I say for free because 90% of the world uses ad blockers, but it's okay. Not in my power to control and I understand why they do it. I'm always happy to see people who get excited about this stuff. It looks like I'm trying to teach people about DSMs, but it's not what I'm actually teaching people at all. I'm teaching people how to think critically and creatively about what they're doing. Patreon has given me enough of a boost to really make a difference in the kind of production equipment I'm using, and I've been making upgrades wherever I can as I go along and it's had an enormous impact on the GSX build series going forward. You're going to like it when you get there. I can only be grateful for where I am after all this work. I can't begin to describe how many thousands of hours I've put into this over the past decade. I'm pretty humble, no social media, no self-promotion, just an organic following of people who searched for this and found it. That's why I've got all the best subscribers on all of KZbin. They found me because they wanted "it". And I'm here for all of them. I poke around on other people's channels and find my subscribers' comments everywhere. They're concerned, kind and helpful people even on other people's channels. It's absolutely fantastic to see those are the kinds of people following my work. Just be aware I'm pretty OK at reading people, and I will often do things to make even the brightest among us uncomfortable. Pretty much the entire Hyundai series is exactly that. I want everyone to feel dirty for learning great things from the least among them.

Secret I have found over years of rebuilding carbs and a few throttle bodies- especially from applications where the pedal gets mashed repeatedly, as in racing, the throttle plate shaft can become twisted- like a torsion bar. The butterfly will be slightly bent, too. Just as testing pushrods- roll the shaft against quality plate glass to determine any bend, and use a laser pointer to check the valve plate groove for twist.

If I may make a recommendation, valve lapping compound on the tip of a screw driver helps fill in the gaps that are between the screw head and the driver/bit. This trick has helped me countless times. I can't tell you how many helicopter blade ends have corroded screws that open the cap for balancing. A large #3 and fine grit compound make it a breeze. And if you're stuck on the road with this problem, find a crack in the road or some dirt. Spit on the screwdriver tip and grind it into the ground a bit. Provides nearly the same result.

nice to see a 1 hour long video of jafro fixing the throttle bodies. you've upgraded the engine components alot, but you've left the transmission untouched. maybe custom straight cut gears, or performance synchro rings, or even a better shifter and it's linkages would be awesome. anyways great work that you've done, keep it up.

In the Hyundai, I'm using the '90 FWD transmission. It's renowned for being the toughest gearbox in the lineup. My GSX has a TRE stage 2.5 transmission in it, and my Galant VR-4 has a TRE stage 2. So plenty of upgrades have been done on the transmissions that needed it the most, but I do have an extra spare '91 AWD gearbox that I plan to do those kinds of upgrades to. It just doesn't take precedence over the 3 cars I need to get rebuilt and running first. The 3 cars with that have perfectly good working gearboxes. I'm ready for that day when it comes, though. :)

One other way that's more ... let's say hi-tech to get ANY seal you're missing, is to contract someone with the ability to create a mold (be it 3D printed, machined, cast) and then cast your own using the type of rubber/silicone/rtv you think is closest to spec. Personally, i 3D print my o-rings now using TPU filament. As a material, it hits pretty much all the soft spots of a rubber, has some minor disadvantages (you can't use it for anything that puts too much pressure as it might give way due to the way it's printed, but i've gone up to car tire pressures for a few seconds on some and they stood up to test) and is easy to re do, again and again, since i have the file. Smallest i've printed was for my Renault's carburetor, a tiny, tiny little gimp that i couldn't find unless i accepted new old stock, which is pretty much perished rubber by now, and the largest is a gasket that fits on a 1988 Merc's compressor housing. A hexagonal piece with a smaller inner wall (which is the high pressure application i talked about). There's hassle involved, but going forward, with parts demand, i think this is the future.

I put my throttle body in an ultrasonic cleaner with a degreaser for 1/2 hour. I then took it out, rinsed with water and wiped it down with a white paper towel. When I was done, the paper towel did not get dirty; it was bright white. All the little nooks and crannies were clean enough to eat off of.

I need to do a mazda mzr dedicated channel. Your engine was far more common than the mzr, but the mzr started in 2001 and is still being produced. It was used in almost every mazda and ford product in that time period. It shares quite a few parts from the previous generation Mazda motor, the B series, and it surprisingly shares quite a bit in common with its successor, the SkyActiv series. Almost all variants of the motor can be turbocharged since Mazda built the blocks and cranks to be shared between natural and turbocharged variants. I am running 8 psi reliably on my stock motor miata (2.0L with 10.7/1 compression ratio) and feel comfortable I can push 10 psi, but there all sorts of nuances I had to figure out to get there. For example, the motor suffers from PCV blow by, a few check valves need to be added, the MAP needs to be swapped, the intake needs an extra gasket to seal a minor air leak, etc.

I can't believe this is a lot harder than rebuilding a damn turbocharger! Felt like I wanted to get rid if my 2g already. Can't get past 3k-4k rpm on WOT even on sitting and finally made a boost leak test. Unlucky me lol. Great video though!

You should half-shaft and knife-edge the throttle shaft on at lease one of those. Also, taper the holes in the plate so that tapered screws can sit flush in the plate. You can do all this for next to nothing. If you're feeling really brave, locate a slightly larger plate and bore out the throttlebody to match.

Has anyone following Jafro been able to find all of these parts from one vendor? And if so, may i ask which vendor might have had “all of the parts”? Might be a long shot trying to find one website with a complete list of available parts to refresh this TB, but you guys are way smarter then i am, and if anyone has found them all in one place its you guys! Keep on keepin on guys! 🤘🏻

A little note: the 1990 throttle body tps is the same one that mitsubishi carburetor vehicles use from 1992-1996 so you can harvest them from those old carburetors(4g93 and 4g63)

I own a 90 DSM and found out the hard way that the throttle bodies are different when I bought a junk yard throttle body to get a switch off of.. Thats the exact reason I want to take every modification off of the 90 I own and eventually swap them onto a good condition 91 DSM. That way aftermarket support will be way easier and I wont have to worry about the differences on a 90 car vs a 91-94.

Small tip to times when you got screws that are hard to remove. A lot of screwdrivers have a hole through the top. I like to take a long allenwrench or some metal rod through that hole and press down on the rod/allen wrench while rotating for maxium leverage and down force on the crew.

If anyone plans to do a job where removal of very old fasteners is involved, spray those things with penetrating oil well in advance!!! Do some heat and oil a few days in advance, let it sit and repeat. I did some exhaust manifold bolts on my ford truck that are notorious for snapping. Did this once a day for 2 weeks and every single one came out ugly but intact. At worst you waste 5 minutes a day. At best you remove some fasteners that otherwise may not have come out dry.

I'll be honest, I wish this video came out a little bit sooner, before I stripped one of the tb screws. Fortunately it's not badly stripped so I hope enough pb blaster and heat will get it out. Great video jafro, thank you for all the great info

@William Dye Yeah, me too, I'm glad theres people able to pitch in to him and I'd like to one day, but this talons sure not making it easy, I love the car but theres a lot of work that it needs, a tb rebuild is more of a luxury for me right now but I'd like to get it done, as well as a turbo rebuild. 8 months on a broken leg has really set me back but it hasn't stopped me yet, but the day the motor finally runs again will make all of it well worth it

Thanks again Jafro. I have an EVO III intake manifold I was going to use for my 2.3L 6-bolt build. I have a Diamante throttle body, I found it bolts to the manifold and is a larger diameter than the DSM! I want to use it, even though its supplemental equipment protrudes out extra far on both sides of TB, I'll have extra room with the engine in a Dodge Stealth chassis but I have yet to bolt parts to a 4G63 engine to check. I imagine that it can be rebuilt and holds boost, just the same, it looks like a similar built Mitsubishi part.. and I believe Diamante 6G72 TB was different pre/post '99/'00.

No TPS surgery? The case halves are ultrasonically welded together. A home made hot wire saw is nice to have; a Dremel wheel makes too big of a gap. TPS is just a glorified rheostat. The cast body is what holds it's position onto the TB. Usually it's just a loose & dirty wiper.

Jafro, for those throttlebody screws, you need a Vessel Megadora JIS impact screwdriver. Takes these screws out without any damage to the screws, or any of the JIS screws on the car for that matter.

We watch as the industrious Jafro wrenches on a throttle body herd. We need to be quiet as not to disturb his focus, if he scares he might run and loose the location of his e-clip. The e-clip is imperative to the survival of the entire throttle body herd throughout the harsh long installation season. The Jafro doesn't seem to notice us as he cleans his car parts, and hunts for an o-ring by the communal watering hole. He looks frustrated with the e-clip harvest, after having to travel vast distances to collect enough clips to feed his throttle body herd. He's expended too much energy in the harvest to re-shoot the shaft install, he needs to conserve all of his energy to the rebuild the new throttle body, brought to him by another Jafro. The Jafro shows his relief after sneaking by the dangerous spring winding. Living his entire life dodging the treacherous hazards of the DIY garage, has prepared the Jafro for dealing with the unforeseen dangers of the throttle body herd. SHHHHH... I think he saw us staring at the size of his hammer. The herd is behaving and the Jafro falls into an easy routine, passing the rest of the disassembly season without incident. The installation season starts out easily, until the biscrew demands the Jafro's attention. Luckily the Jafro knows that the pep boys flock will be able to help. Trudging through the trials and tribulations of the rough installation has provided the Jafro better boost and pedal response for his offspring, ensuring the future survival for the Jafro and his species.
