I’m going to say this…after watching what you guys did to that crankshaft for measuring and balancing I realized this…no matter how big your ego is at fixing cars some things like this are left to the professionals with machinery and science and math skills. I’m here thinking in the mindset of oil changes, air in tires, water pump, spark plugs, alternator and battery swap. These are very important to know how to do and I do, but some things like this crankshaft which is the soul of the engine’s movement are left to the real deal guys. That’s why I see now why it costs thousands of dollars doing major engine repair instead of replacing brake pads in your backyard.

Yep. Basically get your new parts and take your motor and the parts to a shop to get balanced and also have your block checked for cracks. Then put it together yourself. To save a little money.

In the near future I'll be doing this as well. I saw another video concerning replacing the oil pump. And it was concerning the centering of the pump. And he put a feeler gauge of about 25,000 I think on opposite sides of the crankshaft in order to make sure it was truly centered. I noticed you didn't do that. Keep in mind I have never built an engine in my life. This is going to be new to me. I'm really intimidated but I'm looking forward to it at the same time.

Lots of great info. First impression was daddies boys but you had provided a lot of new information to me. Defenitely a master tech, I thank you and your trainer for their spread of information and wisdom. I do have a question for you --something ive always wanted to know-- do you use the existing bolts or the new bolts after installing the caps before the crankshaft to record and verify the ID of the crank bearings? If using the new bolts, it's oaky to use them twice? And if yes, is that because in this case they are torque to angle and not torque to yield? Thanks Subscribed
@JacobVillemain3 жыл бұрын
When using TTY fasteners I usually check clearances with old fasteners and then reassemble with new fasteners. Main cap bolts on LS are TTA though and can be reused. Only bolts that should be replaced are the rod bolts & head bolts. That being said, a lot of people do reuse them once.

I can't speak on the VVT or AFM but, I can tell you the DoD has been know to fail. My engine (2012 5.3) had it and we disabled it with HP Tuners software. They have had issues with the lifters failing on the DoD engines. We disabled it at 100k and 30k later there has been no ill effects from doing so. So nice not having the engine constantly switching back and forth between 4 and 8 cylinder.
