Good job. Lime in mortar does a few things, it's self sealing for one, hairline cracks fill themselves over time when exposed to the elements. It's also provides workablility and gives extra strength. Same as the sand and lime mixture used to pack the chimney hardens and self seals over time. People choose plastercisier over lime because lime causes burns but lime is still the better option. Good man Derek.

When packing around the pots why dont you use volcanic ash and mix it up with a bit of sand? This would allow the pots to expand when hot and not crack the blocks?
