Both styles work, this is more relaxing, i wouldn't say you need to be completely silent as the sporadic instruction is very useful. Banter or no banter, you're the best. I used to plaster about 10 years ago, now just enjoy watching someone else do the hard work. I never liked doing wet corner on wet corner, but you make it look easy

Never mind the chit-chat (or not) it's really interesting to hear the sound of the work. The sound of tools is really important and it's missed on a lot of KZbinrs content. Great stuff as always.
@GeoffAnderson-l5dКүн бұрын
I agree with this. Sometimes, depends on what's actually being done, it's better for people learning to 'hear what the trowel is doing' more than it being talked over.🙂

Good to see you removing excess overspill plaster from upvc frames etc. as a painter and decorator, I always have to remove it to get a clean line our else it looks terrible, in fact I’m painting a newly plastered bedroom next week and I can bet I’ll have to clean the areas where the plaster has been left on the upvc etc.

Plasterers are usually the dirtiest b*****ds on any building site, leaving plaster over the floors, the windows, window sills. I even had a plasterer hold an alarm wire to the glass with a lump of plaster. Its nice and rare to see one that cleans up after themselves.

If only all plasterers practiced this level of care and attention - a treat to watch. Doing up my place and I've been through 4 plasterers in the last 2 years and only 1 was even remotely acceptable (all highly rated). The amound of sanding, filling, and even patching I've had to do is shocking. Cleaning up those internal angles? No chance. Fading out the plaster by the architrave? No chance (ended up putting planters in beforehand). Cleaning up the windows frames? No chance. Fading out to where skirting goes? No chance - nice big step to give you wonky skirting. Clean finish around sockets and pipework? No chance, the apocolypse finish is good enough!! Domestic plasterers are by far the worst trade in terms of quality. Massive skills gap in the industry.

Kirk, you are a world class master at your craft. I do prefer your jolly commentary rather than you just getting on with it in silence. BTW, if you are to make an updated super guide to skimming, one thing I thought of to add, is that in addition to showing timings and touch tests, you could be the first to show what the plaster should look like it’s doing when the trowel goes over it during each stage, how it should look like it’s changing in appearance, how it should NOT look, etc. to know you are hitting the timings perfectly. If that all makes sense 😅

@UmskiКүн бұрын
Lovely plastering 👍 - I am curious about the cavity closer though - it was only part of the way up and it seems to be that this will still cause a cold bridge along with the fact that it wasn't installed before the doors went in which are attached to the brickwork and that it is not sealed to brickwork either inside or outside - I may be mistaken but I would have thought that the purpose of the cavity closer is to form a closed junction that prevents thermal bridging between the cavity and inner and outer brickwork through being sealed?
@OnthetrowelКүн бұрын
I had a bit to do that day so I didn't have time to take out the doors to fit a bit of plastic. It's not really my job but I've found if I don't do it then nobody else will. There was one behind the original reveals but not where the wall used to be. It doesn't have to be airtight it's just to stop the reveal getting cold, it probably would of been fine without it as the cavity was full of wool but I did it just to be safe. We've just got to do the best we can with what we've got when we arrive. Again it would be great if everyone did their job like this but that's the building trade for you
@UmskiКүн бұрын
@@Onthetrowel sorry wasn't a criticism of your work - the window people should have done this - no point in putting in A-rated frames and glass when all the cold creeps in around the sides! Like you say it's the building trade...but everyone needs to do their bit - no doubt you'll get the blame when they get mould around the reveals!

I am DIY but got loads of friends n family with houses needing work, done plenty of windows doors and plastering jobs. I do all door and window reveals with plaster backer board, the insulation type, foam it on add a couple of fixing tile straight over, my favourite is to line out with 25mm PIR if at all possible, tile board comes as thin as 6mm, very handy. Where do you buy those big fat water brushes?
