Thank you for a nicely detailed description of what used to be and what the new plans are. I liked hearing ideas about a marina with shops and restaurants nearby. When a locale lacks other sources of interest, working with the historical industrial features gives the area a unique identity. For me, that’s quite attractive.

I agree, there’s some lovely old building on the site as well that could pull so much history into the town. It could really change melksham into a thriving town

Great video, it could be a massive boost for Melksham if they develop the Avon site like the trust would like too! But it all depends on how many back handers the council get from the house builder's..

It's a bit sad that it looks like canal restoration will in some cases be dependent upon housebuilding on greenbelt sites, but I think there's a potential upside and a pretty big one at that. Given the canal's conservation credentials not just in terms of helping wildlife, but in being low impact in the use of natural resources politically they have a lot of leverage in pushing for associated development to be really eco conscious - homes, offices, industrial units incorporating things like swift bricks, green walls, wildlife friendly S.U.D.S and also in areas such as using as much recycled and reused material as possible, being well insulated, water saving, using renewable energy, cycle routes and bike parking included etc. I've made this point with proposed developments along stretches of my local canal, the Union in Scotland and they could do this with places like the planned shopping centre that will go with the reopened canal in Derby. This is happening a wee bit already, the Falkirk Wheel visitor centre has gone to a lot of effort to run in an ecologically conscious manner and the proposed cafe/visitor centre with the Runcorn Unlocked project actually aims to showcase green technology. I think the potential canals have for promoting conservation in the fullest sense isn't fully appreciated....exciting times. Another great video thanks.

Further along this canal in Swindon on the Wichelstowe development the houses are all built with nature in mind with Bat and bird bricks in the houses. The canals aren’t dependent on the developments but it does largely pay for that section when it comes so it’s more of a case of the canals taking advantage. Of course a canal side development is also a winner for the developers as well
