Thanks for this video. I used to visit Swindon a lot and it’s very sad to see what it has become. I regularly went to the Oasis but the last time was just after ‘better’ leisure took over (quite happy to name and shame) and the state of the toilets was abysmal so I never went back. It would be wonderful for the canal to be at the heart of a regeneration. It’s worked in Birmingham, Salford and Bristol and Liverpool Docks. Let’s hope the new Council can follow through.

Do some field research of businesses at that point that actually are still operational. The problem you have is with the council all they are bothered with is shortcuts, quick money, housing and council tax. No growth and local employment. More social impact congesting local services. Schools, hospitals and local transport. Opening more canals and railways would increase jobs and give people importance and create new manufacturing. There has been some bad developments and desicions over the last 50 years😊

Brilliant video, a fellow canal enthusiast here. This is the best idea for improving the local area ive seen. Even just starting with putting a basin at phase 2 on the waste land directly behind the bridge at the start and connecting existing canal would be amazing and building businesses etc around that would do so much for that area in particular. I think getting that part done should be easy and require little. Once thats up and running perhaps the rest can be considered once they can see how it improves the local area. A massive task but good work on the video. Its stuff like this raising awareness and putting across these plans that is going to get the ball rolling. Great work guys

Question from a foreigner here - We loved the vid- very interesting to see all those possibilities. But then - you guys talked all the way how totally easy it would be to realise these plans to revive that part of the cut. If it all would be that easy and so clear-cut on the financial reasoning to realize - Why then has Council not yet jumped on that wagon already? Would Council Members watching your vid be enough to get them to agree with you? Or would it take far more detailed and pre-digested plans for them to go along? Or would it need one of the big canal harbour chains to pre-commit to the project so the management of the planned harbour would be guaranteed to convince Council that these plans would be viable? What part of the picture are we missing if it really all would be that easy? Thanks

Interesting video. Ilived in rochdlefor 15years. I know that area well. And on a sunday i would walk from the starting point of your video up to Smithybridge and then back down the man roads a nice stroll.. One of the bigest problems with the Lancashire/ Manchester side of this canal is the deprivation of the area in which it sits. This combined with the old and neglected buildings means that it is neither a good area to set up an expensive business or unless you are a developer with trillions of punds and patient investors it would be too big a gamble. The specific problems around the streets on either side of the canal in your video are drug and prostitution. Yes eventually it would clear up/ clean up and yes it would redevelop the whole area but who in their right mind wants to put their boat and or car overnight in a marina in such a inhospitable place..... as far as i am aware you still have to have escorted passage through Newton Heath and advice is not to stop in or around Middleton. and before anyone rants on about destruction of the mills i just want to point out I have a soft spot for this area and i have always loved the Mills and the history around the industrial heritage of the North West While as an ex boater i would love to see it re open , i think the cost per meter vs the return short term makes it far to expensive.. if RMBC had millions to spare then yes go ahead. I reckon you are looking at 40 years before a return on your investment . Nick S.
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 3 күн бұрын
@@Nick-e8k that’s not how it works with infrastructure. It’s money into the local economy, with safe mooring which could easily be achieved with the marinas etc you’d have return on investment in less than 10 years. Most canal schemes are within 5-7. The issue is that isn’t money in hand it’s to the local economy, more use of business etc you don’t directly see it like you would fares on a railway. Then the development that springs up around is a gradual improvement to the area.

@CourtAboveTheCut OK I bow to your knowledge on the economic benefits. I have no knowledge of your location but I assume you know this area . It is a narrow corridor of enterprising industry. From whole printing and heavy engenering to long stay/ overnight haulage park. With many small companies in between. And I love it. Plus I would love to see it developed A secure marina ? Publicly owned, yes. Privately owned I doubt it.. you would require a fully enclosed site with robust fencing to start with. A car park where cars can, in the first instance equally as secure. I just don't see how you could convince "me" and my 150k boat to tie up there. If RMBC will open the canal and build the marina fine. The video looks like it is a long stretch of canal almost into the centre of town. I guess it is more like half a mile and it stops just over a quarter of a mile away from the town hall. . I want to keep saying I love the idea and I love the area because I do and I would love to see it open I just have my doubts. Just as an aside it would be interesting to see if the money spent opening up what was a record holding bridge,( I think it was Europe's widest span) , has had that economic benefit you mention in your reply as it is now about 10 years since it was completed. And again a marvellous piece of engineering and forward planning. I wish those involved with this project all the luck in the world. And I hope to come back and see it. Nick S. PS still a fantastic video and a bit of history.

Been waiting for this one. What a lovely area… That photo at 1:33 is in Littleborough, near Hollingworth lake and is actually at one end of the longest pound on the canal. Believe it or not the other end of that pound isn’t much further on than this canal arm, and is where the canal actually starts getting nice. I grew up in Smithybridge, and used to play around it, sometimes even in it when I was a kid. When they opened up all the culverts etc to make it navigable was fascinating. I’ll probably add to this comment when I get further into the video. I’m full of useless info about this canal.

That road at 10:32 didn’t used to go right through until recently, maybe 5 years. @@CourtAboveTheCut yea I don’t think that road is really needed tbh. I dunno why but my comment seems to have gone, my comments keep disappearing not just on your channel but on nearly everything I comment. As much as I’d love to see it, I don’t think this arm will ever re-open unfortunately. Rochdale council don’t have the forward thinking for it. They have a similar mindset to Oldham. They have no interest in keeping or saving any heritage of what built the town. Listed buildings seem to just “fall down” in the middle of the night or catch fire. The only reason why the canal was even reopened in the first place was due to a massive lottery grant if I remember right. I was only a kid when it happened, maybe about 11 or 12 when they were deculverting Smithybridge Road near my mum and dads house, but even then I remember thinking how good it was and how it will make the area more attractive, as a kid. It’s obvious to anyone with any common sense. P.s. you were lucky to get out from Half Penny Bridge without being propositioned by a prozzy with no teeth. It’s rough round there.

There is no profile on the Bridgewater Canal. There are sandstone walls on either side. This breach is NOT in the same place. It is next to it (further Westward)! The reason that they built embankments steeper, was because, a narrower foot print means less land to buy. Reducing the overall cost of the project. To insinuate that the builders weren't experience or knowledgeable is quite naive, considering that these embankments are over 200 years old (not maintained) and modern day structures are needing serious refurbishment after only 60 years. 100 years ago they would have undergone routine maintenance and on nights of heavy flood, 'Banksmen' would have been out sluicing to relieve to the pressure on the canal walls. You need to do more research on the construction methods and materials used. This canal was NOT built poorly, it has been poorly maintained! Have you been to the breach site?
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 4 күн бұрын
I’ve done plenty of research thank you, I literally spend my life reading up on canals and what I said is true, if you don’t like that then that’s your opinion but things changed after the 1800s as the engineers became more experienced, it’s info freely available online should you wish to read it. How much experience do you think anyone had on the first commercial canal to be dug? The clue is in the fact that it was the first. The canal has breached on multiple occasions, being built on quicksand being one reason, the rest as I described are all reasons that cause breaches, the canal is widely regarded as poor construction in places hence the previous issues, again feel free to have your own opinion on that but that’s exactly what it is

Great video! If you have a look at the breach here on google maps 53.38130631768031, -2.4106031333953886 I think the other major factor was the River Bollin which runs alongside the Bridgewater and then under the aqauduct right next to the 1970's breach. On New Years Day morning, the Bollin broke its banks and completely flooded the field on the right, so along with the canal overflowing, and the culvert underneath having massive pressure, you also have an entire field running for hundreds of meters saturating the opposite bank right through and then under the canal.

At 23.46 is the rebuilt culvert built a few hundred meters from the botton Pewsham lock not far fton the spillweir at 9.12. It's upper face was rebuilt, but not the culvert, some time in the 2000's, the strem that goes under the canal at that point can go from very little to full bore in a hours as above there is a few miles of catchment areafrom Derry and Bowden hills. After this was done there was a vast storm with floods in the area and the force of the stream going throught the culvert blew it out, it was just like it had been blasted out and the old brichwork failed, the build up of water and pressure must have been tremrndus. The culverts south of the one that blew out ore very much deeper and would mean major work if they failed as they are deep, build prior to the canal being finished. I believe that when the canal is extended twords Lacock and the connection of the Kennett and Avon canal , this bit that paralel the river Avon will need one ore more much bigger spillwers, like the one built to the East of Royal Wootton Bassett, to regulate the excess water. That was intresting to build as after a storm we found the fomers for the concrete pore floating in deep pond due to the excess water from the canal and adjacent streem.
