THANK YOU!! I made some real progress yesterday... I removed it, took it all apart, removed the (burnt smelling) grease, pressure washed it, and put it back together. Now I just have to fashion a dipstick to see how much gear oil to put in it. The yellow cap was right where you said it would be too, thanks for the help! -Tracy

Guys I Appreciate The Video I'm Rebuilding a 5 Speed Foots Transaxle an Needed To See How The Gears Meshed Since mine Fell off on Tare Down . I had a Halfmoon Key to Sheer and it Stopped my Mower Dead in it's Tracks not Even Reverse they Put Too Small a Key in The Little Gear That Meshes To The Bullgear from the Factory ! One Mistake I Seen Yall Possibly Made is When Yall went to The 6 Speed Setup I Think Yall Might of Put it Back Together With The 5 Speed Shift Rod an Detent , if So it will Still Shift But Somewhere in The Shifting You Will Not Have a Detent For One or More of The Gears Anyway Thanks Again For You Men Taking Time To Make The Video it Was Very Helpful ! Oh an For The Worn Pinion an Ring Gear , That Ring Gear Has So Much linear Load on it That it Wears The Splines on The Shaft an Also The Splines inside The Ring Gear an What Happens is It Eventually gets So Worn That The Gears Bearly Mesh and it Strips Both Just Exactly Like What You Have There ! I Beveled The Inside of My Good Ring Gear an Tig Welded it To The Shaft To Stop That Crap From Happening , We Shall See how that Works Out I Also Tigged The Small Gear To The Shaft That Pulls The Big Bull Gear after installing a new Halfmoon Key ! 🇺🇸😉👍🏻

VERY helpful to know what happens when the transaxle is split, and which bits go where. The exploded view plans are incomprehensible to me. Thanks so much!

thanks for your feedback on opening up the trans for my mangled axle. We cheated on a fix this time - we welded some beads on the axle to build the post back up, then welded the wheel right to the axle itself. It works! If I can make it thru the season, I'll pull the whole thing next fall and replace the axle altogether. For now, this fix was cheap!

Good video, lots of people don't have time to hang at a shop to watch this stuff. I always made sure EVERYTHING was as clean as a whistle tho... so you can spot leaks or cracks. Treated it like a surgeon. Would never leave a part that dirty in or out! The cause of the problem can still be in the grease left over inside... think grinding compound. I'd paint friend's rebuilt parts hot pink enamel as a joke, but they'd notice a leak faster cause they always look at it then (while cursing me).

Thanks for making these videos. I am about to take mine apart and was a little uncomfortable not knowing what was inside. Now I can open it with more confidence. And thank you for the tip about the ball and spring. I would have gone berserk trying to figure out how to get that back in!

Sorry this is such a late comment. But my Uncle was a v.p. of engineering for Harley Davidson and he took pride in fixing anything with just simple tools, like a pair of pliers. But then again he was Scottish.

Try splittiing the transaxle and sand the surface where the Transaxle seals to an even, clean finished and then add RTV sealant as inthe video. Look for any rotted or broken seals while the transaxles' open.

I was afraid you'd say that! (I'm lazy) :) What do you think about pressure washing the inside and spraying it down with silicone? Or should I just wipe it out with rags? Do you have any idea how much gear oil I'd need to add? I'm assuming I don't fill it all the way... maybe 1/2 or 2/3, sort of like a differential on a car? Thanks again for your help. -Tracy

I have a ‘91 Roper lt110. It was seized in 2nd. I’ve taken it apart, cleaned it all. Not sure why it’s still a challenge to change gears. Also- when closing it up- the manual says to fill with 4qts Sae30? I got about 2 in before it leaked all over. Wtf am I doing wrong?! Any insight is greatly appreciated!

@runout57 7 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you just change the ring and pinion gears, that way it would still be a 5 speed which the lawn tractor shifting set up would work correctly. Also you should have cleaned the gear case out and installed new grease. I have rebuilt these gear boxes and the grease you left in there WILL eat the gears in a very short time. GOOD LUCK ALL THE METAL THAT WAS WORN OFF THE OLD GEARS ARE STILL IN THERE EATING THE GEARS!!!!!!

Nice video, Wouldn't it be a good idea to clean out the old grease and put fresh grease in it since the old grease no doubt has metal fillings in it from the old worn gears? Thanks.

if you kept the front pulley the same, and dropped the rear size down from about 9 inch to about 4-5 about how many inches would the belt size drop? i have a belt for my craftsman that i want to use for around the yard, but its too small, so i was just thinking about changing the pulley, it would go faster and i would be able to use a belt i already have... what do you think? stock speed is about 7mph, how fast would it go with the 4 inch rear pulley? please reply, thanks.

Parts 1 and 2 are really great. Thank you for posting. Do I need to take the transaxle off and open it up like you did in order to replace the axle? The little pin in the axle sheared off and tore up the left axle. Now the tractor won't go. Is it possible to replace the axle without removing the trans?

Great Video. Thank you. If I want to replace the axle itself, do I need to remove the entire transaxle and open it up like you did here? The pin on the left axle of my sheared off and tore up the axle, so the mower won't move now as that side just spins. Any advice you can offer is appreciated!

I am having a problem with mine sticking in second gear. I need to shut the engine off to rock it back and forth to get it out of gear. This only happens in second, I have not pulled it apart but it is on my list. Have you heard of this? Is it worth fixing. I have another trans to put in but it is only a five speed. The mower belongs to my father and he loves mowing in second gear and only second gear. So any other gear is out of the question.

When servicing these transmission make sure to leave in the old grease mixed in with broken chips off the pinion and ring gear and never flush out the case or gears . That why the broken chips and metallic will lubricate the gears and chain better and the transmission will last longer
