I just repaired a 1946 #1666. Had to rebuild the E unit and find a trailing truck on eBay for it. Runs great but not a good puller. Definitely dropped. Bent cab corner but all and all pretty nice engine and satisfaction in getting it running again.

Thanks for watching! Oh man! Yeah those are pretty lite , but are excellent engines.

I have one and it is so heavily constructed yet even with no power applied it will easy move just by turning the drive wheels with your hand .

I have two post war 1666’s. Only one tender has a whistle and only one engine has a swinging bell. Both need work.

Hopefully you can get them working. They are great workhorse engines. Thanks for the comment, welcome to the channel 🚂💨

@@NixCrossing After mine are repaired I was planning on painting them in a red white and blue pattern. I’m not sure what type of paint to use. Model car paint typically ends up being sticky. One 1666 was given to me about 10 years ago included with a collection of H.O. trains. Another one I got in a trade with my cousin.

Never spray electric contact lubricant directly on the 3 pole commutator. (flat surface of the brass contact portion of the armature where the brushes make contact) It will gum up your brushes and bridge the 3 thin gaps between the surface of the brass commutator plate with a nasty carbon paste and cause a bunch of excess arcing on the face that produces needless heat on the armature windings. Instead, polish the armature up with fine 1500 grit sand paper. (only once) Then assemble the brush plate back over it with the brushes. Next oil the bearing points of the armature shaft itself with (one drop) of light machine oil or transmission fluid on both sides of the armature if possible. (Gear side and brush plate side). Needle applicators are very good for this small application. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips! I’ve been on the lookout for one of those oil kits that have the needles with - heavy - Lite - medium Oils.
@crabbinmoose85832 жыл бұрын
@@NixCrossing You can make your own pretty cheap. Just go to Hobby Lobby and get a needle applicator, then buy some transmission fluid and you're in business.

Thanks so much! Those are great runners. If you can , try to find the older variation. They seem like they were built better with more detail. I think the bell that can swivel are the older ones 🚂💨

I don't think it would hurt the value to paint the cow catcher. They're a removable part and are often a different color or shade of black anyhow.

DB TECH.right you are,the steam chest is blued and not painted
@crabbinmoose85832 жыл бұрын
Don't paint it. Just re-blue the steel with some cold bluing compound. You can find it at most gun shops and specialty hardware stores. It blackens the old metal up like a shot gun barrel. Clean the metal with warm soapy water first to get off all the oils. Dry it off good and then apply cold bluing liberally and uniformly with a craft brush and let it sit for a few minutes. Then wash the part again in cold water to set the "blue" (metal blackening) permanently. That should be enough to get it to match the boiler a lot better.
