Check your side stand sensor and also your clutch sensor,in some bikes you may have to hold the clutch before it cranks

Should be really easy to turn over. Im pretty sure that engine has desmodromic valves. No valve springs.

When you we’re turning the engine over by the rear wheel, you were feeling resistance as you were at compression on the front cylinder, you hadn’t removed the front spark plug. When checking TDC, put a screwdriver down the plug hole then when the screwdriver is pushed out at the furthest point, that is TDC for that cylinder. Hope that helps for future diagnosis.

Hi CJ, yeap, this is how a desmodromic head valve control works. I am not sure if the perfect alignment of the lower pulleys has anything to do with the engine being stuck at some point. I suppose those are for oil and water pump.....anyway. We could call it a sort of vintage rebuild.........new lessons though.

Very nice troubleshooting. Sometime the crank mark lands on TDC twice. So you have to make sure the #1 piston is actually up at TDC and not down. So your timing could be 180 degrees off. Just double check that. Keep up the good work.

The factory air filter does not seal tight to the ram air ducts, this can allow dirt and debris to bypass the air filter. I installed some mwr air filter pods to remedy that problem. I’ve heard that this issue could cause catastrophic engine, long term.

I rebuilt a 1098. If the red light is blinking that’s a security light I believe. And if they are aftermarket keys then they would have had to be programmed to the ECU and the Dash. Other than that you would just be able to turn on the bike but not start it. My 1098 came with no key so I had buy a replacement set with keys the ignition and locks. I sent it to a company in UTAH and the reprogrammed that key and ignition to my dash. When I got it back I could crank the bike.

Did you remove the spark plug from the front cylinder? It will be hard to turn the motor if the front cylinder is making compression with the spark plug still installed.

One of the yellow lights in the dash is for the immobilizer (it should be off when ignition is on) so this is the issue of no crank situation -> get the immobilizer ring closer to the key (assuming it is programmed as indeed it is not OE). Additionally take note of the radiator, it is slowly beeing scratched by metal piece holding throttle cables to the airbox, so sooner or later it will make a hole (guess how I know). I;ve cut some of it to make some spacing to the radiator. Greetingd from Poland :)

also check the battery, if the battery isn't fully charged it will not crank, once i forgot my ignition on and drain the battery off, was doing the same clicking noise no matter how much i tried to crank it

Your engine comes slowly through the second TDC because it's compression stroke to the front cylinder (in which you didn't get your spark plug out).

Shouldn't matter if its in neutral. Kick stand switch only matters if you try putting it in gear and going with the kick stand down. Unless its a faulty switch or got broken

if timing was off theres damage on valves and pistons. would not recommend to turn engine before opes sylinder heads and check everything. love to watch your videos.

The red blinking light on the dash when everything is off is normal, that's your immobiliser, mine is the doing the same when the bike is off, i have a streetfighter 848, same bike only streetfighter not sport

Take the other plug out so your not fighting the compression on the other cylinder making it easier to spin over with the wheel good luck

The gray stuff on the sparkplug was anti-seize. And when you pulled the air filter and said it was new look at the inside of the filter cause the air flows backwards through the filter cause of the snorkels.

Maybe it won't turn over with the side stand out? The side stand switch might be throwing a fit. It is in neutral? You might als have the clutch lever in if you want to start it, some bikes need that.

Hey CJ. Do you think that the printed label on the valve cover shows that the engine is from a junkyard? Maybe that would explain the broken timing belt cover too, as it may have fallen over when it was out of the bike? It's a complete unknown, i know. Great content though. Cheers Martin. (UK)

I had a similar issue with my MT07 not turning over and had the starter relay clicking. My starter motor had a break in it so i had to replace it. Could very easily be 100 other things but thats my 2 cents

Which cylinder is at top dead centre when you align the marks? As the front cylinder still has a spark plug in it and can build pressure. Hence why leaving it for a second to let some of the air escape around the piston rings (normal occurrence) allows you to keep going.

Hi CJ, I too am an 848 owner, and I have an idea to fix the problem of lack of starter response. There are two orange lights on your display. One is "chech engine" the other is the error icon. When you turn the ignition, use the "MODE" switch down or up and you should see the error code on the display. The switch lest next to the left handlebar. There should be two. The codes are: INJE - 13.1 Vertical cylinder injector error INJE - 13.2 Vertical cylinder injector error PUMP - 16.0 Fuel pump relay error FAN - 18.1 Fan relay error FAN - 18.2 Fan relay error STRT - 19.1 Starter contactor error STRT - 19.2 Starter contactor error STEP. - 21.1 Stepper motor error STEP. - 21.2 Stepper motor error STEP. - 21.3 Stepper motor error LAMB. - 22.1 Lambda heater error LAMB - 22.2 Lambda heater error EXVL - 23.1 Exhaust valve motor error EXVL - 23.2 Exhaust valve motor EXVL - 23.3 Exhaust valve motor error EXVL - 23.4 Exhaust valve motor error EXVL - 23.5 Exhaust valve motor error TPS - 1.1 Throttle position sensor error TPS - 1.2 Throttle position sensor error PRESS - 2.1 Pressure sensor error PRESS - 2.2 Pressure sensor error T.WAT - 3.1 Engine coolant temperature sensor error T.WAT - 3.2 Engine coolant temperature sensor error AIR - 4.1 Air temperature sensor error AIR - 4.2 Air temperature sensor error BATT - 5.1 Battery voltage error BATT - 5.2 Battery voltage error LAMB - 6.1 Lambda sensor error TILT - 6.2 Lambda 2 sensor error DTC - 8.0 Traction control unit error (this error can only occur if the bike has been fitted with the traction control kit available from Ducati performance) ECU - 30.0 Engine ECU error PK.UP - 34.0 Pick-up sensor error SPEE. - 36.0 Speed sensor error IMMO - 37.0 Immobilizer error IMMO - 37.1 Immobilizer error IMMO - 37.2 Immobilizer error IMMO - 37.3 Immobilizer error IMMO - 37.4 Immobilizer error IMMO - 37.5 Immobilizer error CAN - 38.0 CAN line error Betting on an Immo problem. That round antenna for the key is problematic on the 848. In mine, after rain, sometimes you have to remove it and "manually" scan the key. When it is located around the ignition cylinder sometimes it does not work properly. It always works correctly when it is in around the key. Maybe the previous owner wanted to get rid of the immo because of problems during rain and washing? I hope I have helped. Greetings

Red blinking light should go off when ignition on , and when no key in ignition then immobiliser goes in to armed mode , I dont own this bike , but that how it works in general in cars and bikes Thats if your key chip is mathing the one in the bike ofcourse 😜

So that tank is made from plastic. They used plastic that reacts to the ethanol in today's gas. It makes the tank expand and crack. If you empty all of the gas out and let it dry for some time the tank will retract to close to normal shape. Only run 100% pure gas to keep the tank in its best current shape.

Relay up forward is a delay for headlights while you turn bike on so you have full use of battery Looks like someone with no mechanical knowledge has been digging around aimlessly Ensure spark plugs are out to rotate engine also otherwise compression will will halt rotation
